The OverAchiever: Guide to Children's Week 2011

Yep, folks, we've got back-to-back WoW holidays this year with Noblegarden and Children's Week! Noblegarden will end right around the time that Children's Week begins, and you've got from Sunday, May 1, until Sunday, May 8, to get everything you need. Check your in-game calendar to see your realm's exact start and end times.
The Children's Week achievements and the meta For The Children are part of the year-long What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been, so you will want to get these done if you're working toward a Violet Proto-Drake. Fortunately for you, there are only six achievements associated with the meta and seven with the holiday itself. Unfortunately for you, one of them is an almighty pain in the ass that made #2 on our series of WoW's 25 most evil achievements.

This achievement's been bugged in years past -- players would get then lose it after logging to other characters -- so don't freak out if that happens again. Blizzard's usually quick with the hotfixes.
Bad Example I've listed where and how you can find the necessary sweets below; just don't forget to have your orphan out before you sit down to what might be expensive treats:
- Tigule and Foror's Strawberry Ice Cream This will be sold by vendors who appear in Stormwind and Orgrimmar for the duration of the holiday, although it's possible that their locations will have changed somewhat post-Cataclysm. If you're Alliance, you'll be looking for Emmithue Smails, who will probably be located in or around the main Stormwind inn. If you're Horde, Alowicious Czervik was traditionally found between Orgrimmar's central auction house and bank (now Grommash Hold). If you're leveling a character in Outland, you may find it more convenient to purchase the ice cream from your faction's innkeeper in Nagrand. You've also been able to find it on a vendor at the Shimmering Flats racetrack in Thousand Needles, which is now ... uh, underwater. Fear not: Brivelthwerp peddles the ice cream these days from a boat at 69, 85.
- Red Velvet Cupcake Sold by Aimee, the Dalaran pastry vendor located outside the city's north bank at 51, 27.
- Dalaran Brownie Sold by Aimee.
- Dalaran Doughnut Sold by Aimee.
- Lovely Cake Sold by Aimee. In order to get the Lovely Cake Slice you need, right-click the cake to set it down somewhere on the ground. You'll then be able to right-click it again and take a "slice" of this somewhat expensive cake.
- Tasty Cupcake Created by cooking, requiring 350 skill (or you can always look on the auction house, as enterprising players will certainly be selling them, albeit for high prices, during the holiday). Requires two Simple Flour (purchased from any cooking supplier) and one Northern Egg per cupcake. If you're not willing to pay what are sure to be highly inflated prices on the auction house for eggs, you can easily get them off most bird mobs in Northrend.
- Delicious Chocolate Cake The Delicious Chocolate Cake recipe is a random reward from cooking dailies. Most dedicated chefs are already likely to have the recipe, which requires 1 cooking skill and eight Simple Flour, four Ice Cold Milk, four Mild Spices, eight Small Eggs, one Flask of Port and three Mageroyal. If you don't have the recipe or the inclination to farm up the materials, you'll probably find some cakes on the auction house, but -- like the Tasty Cupcake -- they are likely to be very expensive.
Aw, Isn't It Cute? This is very easy and fun to get. Each of the Azeroth, Outland and Northrend Children's Week quest lines will reward you with your pick of noncombat pets at the end, and all you have to do is learn one. The quest lines themselves are very straightforward.
Hail To The King, Baby This was arguably easier during Wrath of the Lich King with tons of players already running Utgarde Pinnacle, but let's face it: At level 85, you should be able to stomp the place with a friend or two, particularly because it doesn't matter whether you kill Ymiron on normal or heroic. Either way, don't forget to have your orphan out before you pull him.
School of Hard Knocks I've been pretty vocal about my hatred for this achievement, and I'm not alone in that. For the length of Children's Week, School of Hard Knocks turns battlegrounds into an an every-man-for-himself bonanza ruining gameplay, and even the achievement's defenders admit it's something to be endured rather than enjoyed.
School of Hard Knocks requires you to return a Warsong Gulch flag, assault a node in Arathi Basin, assault a tower in Alterac Valley and cap a flag in Eye of the Storm -- all with an orphan out. That's all very well and good, because all four objectives are routine for these battlegrounds, but legions of individual players all trying to do them at the same time rather than splitting to different objectives (you know, in the interests of teamwork?) results in an unhappy mess.
The fastest way to accomplish all four objectives is to form a premade with like-minded players, and take turns protecting each other while each gets the objectives done. Failing that, the only way to do this is to keep queuing and trying -- over and over and over again until, wonder of wonders, you're the first person to click your faction's flag in Warsong Gulch or survive the mad dash to a tower in Alterac Valley. Of course, that doesn't actually mean that pursuing the enemy flag carrier or assaulting a tower is even a good idea strategically when you do it, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a player who cares if this is the only thing standing between him/her and the meta.
The saving grace of School of Hard Knocks is that, because the battlegrounds have historically been flooded with players desperate to get it done, you'll sometimes get lucky with a We're all in this together attitude on the part of opposing players. You will get sympathetic players who'll cap and recap nodes for enemies with children out and Warsong Gulch flag carriers voluntarily dropping flags, but you shouldn't count on its being a universal truth. All it really takes is one or two opportunistic enemy players deciding to take advantage of distracted enemies, and your ass is grass. However, because so many players' mains already have the meta, there's a little less urgency these days.
I am a big fan of Blizzard's achievement system, but if you want to encourage more people to play and enjoy battlegrounds, this isn't the way to do it.
Veteran Nanny This achievement is not required for the meta, so don't worry about it unless you've been playing for a while. Players with two of the three Outland Children's Week pets can snag themselves a cool 50 achievement points by simply grabbing whichever noncombat pet they haven't picked in years past.
Working on achievements? The Overachiever is here to help! Count on us for advice on Azeroth's holidays and special events, including new achievements, how to get 310% flight speed with achievement mounts, and Cataclysm reputation factions and achievements.

Childrens Week... Ever notice how there is only Human, Belf, Draenei, and Orc children? Knowing there are many other wonderful races out there, Troll, Undead, Goblin, Dwarf, Nelf ect. I couldn't help but wonder, are the Humans, Belfs, Dranei, and Orc's the only races that know about adoption? Makes me wonder about the other races as well. When have you ever seen a Tauren child? Do the Tauren not have children, are they calfs? What about the trolls? Ever seen a troll child? Are they turned into voodoo dolls? Do dwarfs really just jump up out of holes in the ground like Gimli from LOTR said? And what about our beloved Forsaken? No rattle boned children? Forsaken are a bit more understandable though, because forsaken can not physically re-produce although is this to say that the plagued grain that was sent to all those shores did not get eaten by the children as well? Perhaps the plague was too strong and killed the children outright? I don't know, but even if there are reasons for not having or seeing children of all races, it really makes me wonder why there are no explanations. In this time of helping the orphans don't we deserve to know?

I only need two Holidays to complete the Meta. This and the Flame Festival one.
Reading about the nightmare that is School Of Hard Knocks is really putting me off trying for it now.
Ant Apr 30th 2011 11:03PM
One piece of advice I can give to people trying to the School of Hard Knocks achievement, try making a /wait spam macro. Usually a good indicator for any helpful Horde nearby what your intentions may be and hopefully you can get it done.
You're screwed in EotS though, don't even try it there. Just have to be fast on that one.
Ant Apr 30th 2011 11:03PM
Or Alliance, if you're Horde. Ha, can't believe I didn't catch that.

Last year it was bugged so if you did it the prior year you could not do the northrend part again. I saw somewhere they added a new pet for the main questline so that should be cool.I've always found it difficult to figure out which web hosting packages to choose from. There are SO Many on the web that I can't tell which ones are better to use.

Been trying this for a few hours and giving up on it. It's like a massive middle finger from the developers to those of us who don't PVP.
90% of those in the BG's are there for the Ach, they won't help each other get it done, it's just a massive free for all.
I was going for the Meta because it seemed a fun way to get the Proto Drake, the 310% speed and a fun way to enjoy the Holidays ingame. This Ach is not fun in the slightest, it's stressful, annoying and pisses me off.
I play the game to have fun, not get frustrated with it. A mount isn't worth that wasted time.

This thread makes me smile. I love the disparity between "Those who choose to suck at PvP" and "Those who find the achieve mind-numbingly easy". The devs have had since the first children's week of 3.0 to acknowledge your cries, and yet the achieve remains intact. Suck it up, the achievement isn't that hard. This is an MMO, get some friends together if you want to get this done easier, and stop the mindset of "if it isn't fun because I can't complete it, I want it changed because I deserve it". All of you bads who can't get this done are just another drop in the bucket to Actiblizzard, you are still paying them even though you can't get your way. I got my EOTS and AB parts of the achieve done in 3 BGs, maybe you guys just need to try harder. In before the downvote.
@Allison Robert, your editorials planted within a "how-to" should have your editor look a little closer at your journalism skills.

I'm sorry that you disapprove of my editorializing on School of Hard Knocks in a how-to guide, Burnaphatone, but I find it very difficult to describe the achievement without simultaneously acknowledging that it's very random and often frustrating (even you as a supporter have tacitly admitted this). I feel obligated to make that observation in any guide that potential newcomers might read, because they're otherwise left with no way to anticipate the potential difficulty of SoHK, and may even think they're doing something wrong if they can't get it quickly. I commonly make observations concerning the general difficulty of achievements (and why some might be troublesome to players in certain circumstances) in every guide I write for that very reason.
Whether you nail SoHK quickly or are still queuing for battlegrounds hours later is entirely a function of latency, friendly *and* enemy player cooperation, gear quality, and just sheer dumb luck. That your own faction can grief you while doing this is just icing on the cake, and to me is the sign of a very poorly-designed and mean-spirited achievement. Blizzard can and has done much better than this.
It's fine to disagree with people over the nature and difficulty of the achievement, but referring to them as "bads" is not appropriate. Please be polite, or we ask that you do not comment.

Well i quit WOW over this School of Hard Knocks achievement today, its BS and needs changed, i got everything else done that was needed!
arkhan May 1st 2011 8:35PM
You didn't quit over a not being able to complete a holiday achievement. Or if you did you are pretty weird. Achievements are a fun part of the game, at least for me, but quitting over not being able to get one? Get a grip.
Carlos Ovalle May 1st 2011 8:58PM
Well, so far I've had griefers on my own side complain about achievement seekers, yell at them to quite playing and try to stop us from getting the achievement. For example, one guy just grabbed the flag in EotS and ran off, refusing to return it the entire time.
My wife isn't huge on PVP, but it's the only achievement she needs for Long, Strange trip. She couldn't get it last year, and it's not looking good so far this year.
arkhan May 1st 2011 9:05PM
After all I read about School of Hard Knocks I expected to hate it and to not get it done because it's so difficult. I got all of the requirements within 1 to 3 battlegrounds each. I'd definitely agree that it's one of the more challenging holiday achievements but it's neither impossible nor a "slap in the face" (tm) from Blizzard.
I think most people who have a problem with this achievement are pure PvE players and I see how they could have a hard time with this, it is doable though. I'm not great at PvP, I've never played arena in my life and I only play a few battlegrounds here and there, not rated either. I have mostly crafted PvP gear with two or three pieces bought for honor points, I think this helps a lot.
If you are a pure PvE player and want to get this achievement get some crafted PvP gear which will at least give you some resilience. The gear isn't expensive and it's on the AH pretty much all the time since new PvP chars will buy it on a constant basis. And yes, you should use the crafted gear even if its ilvl is a lot lower than your PvE gear, the resilience on it makes up for it in PvP.
The requirements for the achievements are things that come up in normal play in the battlegrounds. Of course they depend on you getting there first and lag doesn't help but there are tons of achievements that become a lot harder or even impossible if you're lagging badly.
Best advice for this achievement would be to come prepared (get some beginner PvP gear, know the battlegrounds and how to do the things that are required for the achievement, wowpedia and youtube can help with that) and just keep trying. It's not as hard as it's made out to be.

Ironically, it's not EotS or AB that bothers me -- I love those BG's, and I snagged those steps of the achieve quickly.
It's WSG that I hate with the heat from a thousand suns. I despise that BG with every fiber of my virtual being, and the mere thought of having to go in there to do what I feel is the most difficult of the 4 steps fills me with utter dread.
I queued up for WSG 8 times last night -- at least the times were short, so there's that -- and each one made me feel more and more frustrated. Only once in all 8 matches did I even get CLOSE to a flag-carrier's death to have a chance at returning it, and somehow it got clicked before I even saw the damn flag.
I don't know if it's just my battlegroup that is refusing the "nice" pick-up-and-drop help, but all 8 matches last night were legit, and further emphasized just how much I hate this battleground.
WTG Blizz!

I would think that a guide to children's week would go over the quests and the rewards (especially the new ones), not just the achievements. This is clearly only an achievement guide. And really, do we need a guide on how to use our hearthstone with our orphan out?
Additionally, telling people not to worry about bugged achievements isn't particularly sensible, as Blizzard won't give you credit for achievements that you SHOULD have got credit for but didn't. I missed out on the cake achievement last year because it was bugged, but did they refund my cake? Nooooo. Could I try it again? Nooo, because it took me 2 days to get a response and Children's WEEK was over by then.
tenaciousmonkey May 3rd 2011 7:04PM
Umm..it's the OverACHIEVER...so yes, it's basically just an achievement guide, the same for all of the other OverAchiever guides. A guide for the quests is pretty pointless, IMO, since there's no real difficulty in finding anything quest related (basically, go here, go there, buy some stuff for the orphan, return the orphan). And no, we don't need a guide for how to hearth w/ the orphan out, just to know that it's one of the required achievements for the Children's Week meta (and why it's not nearly as detailed as the other sections).
Trisha May 3rd 2011 1:07PM
I really wish Blizz can change this holiday requires when it comes to battlegrounds. I am a PVP healer and it is very difficult to return a flag when all the dps are on top of the flag carrier and I at range healing away... totally unfair
Wolfshanze May 4th 2011 8:47AM
I know this may sound kind of crazy and/or wacky, but have you tried standing in the middle of the mob attacking the flag carrier? Crazier even yet, have you stopped healing shortly before the flag carrier dies so you can start getting ready to click on the flag as soon as it drops?
I have completed SoHK on two different PvP healers (Druid/Pally) and I can assure you it can be done. This is not a "i'm better then you, I can do it why can't you noob" statement, i'm just pointing out the obvious.
If standing 30 yards away from the flag carrier and healing isn't getting you the flag drop, maybe you should stop calling it unfair, just stop healing, stand in the middle of the pack and try and snag that flag. I'm not a big fan of SoHK, but sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do to get the achievement, and if that means suspending healing when the flag carrier is about to go down and stand in the middle of the pile, then do it.
*****
Totally unrelated pro-tip for DKs wanting the WSG-portion of the SoHK achievement. DO STAND 30 YARDS AWAY FROM THE FLAG CARRIER AS HE NEARS DEATH. Have him targetted and when it looks like he's one or two hits from death, DEATH GRIP HIM to you, well away from all those flag clickers, do the finishing blow yourself, safely distant from everyone else and casually click on the dropped flag that is all yours now.
dannyleitner May 5th 2011 12:55PM
with war games now available, cant you just make a guild group and make it just that much easier o.O...or no... ??
jabhwakins May 5th 2011 4:21PM
School of Hard Knocks is all I've had left for 2 years now for my drake. Not holding out hope that I'll get it at this point. WSG and AB were really easy. AV I could see myself getting eventually, I've been close a couple times. But everything would have to go right or I get hand-held through it for EotS. As much as I want my drake after 3 years, this really isn't worth it.
