Around Azeroth: Night time is the right time
We sometimes like to do things a little different around here on Sundays, so today's screenshot is not technically from Azeroth. Instead, it was taken by Odiiranor of The Forgottén on Stormrage (US-A) while messing around with the WoW Machinima Tool and shows the illuminated areas of Stormwind. Now we know which darkened alleyways the rogues like to lurk in at night!

WOW. That is one cool shot.

Seconded. I saw that in the preview, and kept wondering just what it was and how someone got the shot. Definitely saving this one.

Lol I might. If you think its awesome looking from up high, its so much more amazing when actually walking through the city or in a bg. Like I did a bg the other day with it like this and you can barely can see anything. But, you can see the spells coming at you. Like a mage's fireball is a giant glowing mass. Its truely hard to describe in words. I'll put a video up on Youtube though on how to get it to look like this and all that great stuff. Heres my Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/Ascian18

I ran a random with someone from that guild last night. I can't name the player.

I'll see your dungeon run and raise you 16 BC dungeon runs with Odii himself last night. :)

This makes me wonder what Duskwood (and the rest of the game) would have been like if players still needed torches to see very far.
Are there any other games with very pronounced day/night (and/or weather) effects?

Neverwinter Nights did have a nice dark night-time or dark cave feel. You often found items that cast light. This would be a great addition to WoW... as a feral-kitty or as my rogue. My hunters flare would make even more sense too.

Minecraft.

Witcher, as in you could not see much anything in pitch black without a "cat's eye" -potion or a torch. Nights were dark as well, but with the game happening near human settlements, most places were artificially lit - but it was quite a feeling running through a wheat field at night, not to mention a swamp full of monsters.
GrumblyStuff May 1st 2011 1:38PM
@blancester
Yeah, I was thinking that but was more interested in ones that aren't so... sandboxy. You know, ones with gameplay.
Disclaimer: I enjoy Minecraft and follow news about it. I just want it to be more interesting and have a greater adventuring aspect to it.
I guess Pokemon could be on that list. How about anything without random encounters increasing with the lights out?

Diablo 2 did day/night, but I think it was on a faster time frame than real life. Like so many hours in day, and so many in night.
It also had "+Light Radius" items which helped you see better at night, and in dungeons.

Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 have fairly distinct night and day. The caves still have a lot of light for being underground, but that's mostly a convenience issue. They can be pitch black if you make one with the toolkit without any light sources.

To add on to what awall said, there's a mod for Oblivion (there's one for everything!) that gives you "real darkness". Caves are nearly impossible to see in without some sort of light, and the night is pitch black. It's a bit annoying, at times, but MAN is it cool as hell. I really recommend giving that a look.

Yeah, Everquest had a very pronounced day/night. The different races also had different abilities to see well in the dark, with humans being the worst at it. WoW specifically went away from that because they wanted to have a 24hr clock and didnt think it was fair to people who only played at the same time every night to be handicapped by darkness penalties or just darkness in general compared to people who played during the day.
Personally I really liked the day/night cycles of Everquest - it made things interesting and night time definitely did have an impact on your play!

From the look of that shot, I would love to have lighting effects in places like SW, would make evenings a lot more intense. I can just imagine midnight raids by the other faction, being stealthy under the dead of night!
Ylspeth May 1st 2011 12:57PM
I agree. Having more pronounced night time lighting effects in the game would be amazing.
This is one great screenshot. Well done.

I'd love to see night time actually BE night time in the game. As it stands now, the modern major urban area I live in is darker than medieval Stormwind at night. I know there's magic & mages able to do lights, but it'd be great to actually see night time and darkness.
And Ironforge? It's way too bright for being underground. The lights shown wouldn't provide nearly the amount of ambient light depicted; it should be much darker (and wouldn't that help server speed, by keeping the game from having to render everything in full light?). The effects of rendering this even semi-realistically -- imagine going from the relative darkness of the entry area (AH & bank) back to the Great Forge. Or getting hit with the magic-Lite-Brite show of the Mystics Hall...
Drakkenfyre May 1st 2011 5:02PM
The servers don't render the game. Your computer does.
