Blizzard releases Cenarion Hatchling pet for Japan earthquake relief

Cenarion Hatchling for Japan Earthquake Relief
Introducing the latest World of Warcraft companion up for adoption in the online Pet Store: the wild and noble Cenarion Hatchling! This little critter is the twin of the rare Hippogryph Hatchling pet players could randomly encounter in the first World of Warcraft Trading Card Game set, Heroes of Azeroth -- and he's emerged from the forests of Azeroth to lend a helping talon to some friends in need. For every Cenarion Hatchling purchased between now and July 31, 100% of the $10 USD adoption fee will be donated to the American Red Cross's Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami relief efforts. This support will enable the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, emotional support, and other assistance to victims of this disaster.

@Dekota: Thank you for saying that.
The disaster relief pet is kinda the analogue of the Public Radio mug you get for donating to your local public radio station. ... except in this case, Blizzard didn't have to buy a bunch of mugs, or pay postage to deliver them. Ya, if you get an $X premium for donating, your charity effectively gets (donation - $X). But it gets them a donation (at all).
Please don't feel limited to the $10 donation that Blizzard is "providing you incentive to make".

While some people here are asking why Blizzard doesn't donate to a more recent tragedy (like the southern storms), there are others in this same thread asking why they aren't donating to a *less* recent tragedy (like Haiti) since those folks are being "forgotten" in their view.
In the long run, it's a no win situation to question whether the needs of those in one place outweigh those elsewhere. It's not somehow less moral or good for them to donate to one fund, as opposed to another fund.
Honestly, the only way for Blizzard to avoid such public remonstrations for choosing the "wrong" charity is to simply avoid doing these types of charitable events altogether, so hopefully we can just be happy that they're doing some good, even if some of us would prefer to send money to another cause.

I'm from the south as well. I was lucky, but entire schools were destroyed just a few miles away, so we were barely missed.
You're off on your death toll in Japan. That 10,000 was in ONE area alone, Miyagi. 25,500 is now the estimated number of deaths total in Japan, including the still missing. You were off by 15,500 missing/deaths.
...What happened in the south is devastating to individuals. What happened in Japan almost destroyed a country.
If it helps you to rationalize it better, Japan's economy was one of the largest in the world and has taken a major nosedive because of the earthquakes. Which means, our economy went down even further too! Help Japan get back on their feet, our economy will also be aided by it. Even more reason! It shouldn't be needed, but there you go.

@RogueJedi86 There are other ways to help promote donations for the relief effort for the south besides adding to the "OMFG BLIZZARD SUX THEY DON'T MAKE US A PET TOO!" asshole posts that have already been piling up on this thread.
Here's a way to do it.
"That's a great idea blizzard, but please, don't forget about the devastation the mid-south suffered over the past week. Any donations made to the red cross for the relief effort there is greatly appreciated!"
I wonder how many downvotes that would have gotten you? =/

Don't worry Rogue. As a southerner, I can safely say that at the moment, we're getting a LOT of help and supplies. In all honesty, I'm glad this is relief is going to Japan.
We can rebuild our homes and help our families. It's horrible that it happened, but we're all able to pitch in easily due to various grocery chains and charity sites set up to donate food and water and money to help clean up the disaster.
Japan, however, is in a worse bind then us at the moment. Not only that, but i'm sure that Blizzard had to get the approval from various Board of Trustees to do this, which can take a while to get full approval (ESPECIALLY for a pet that was exclusive to the TCG, which was fetching a pretty penny). So I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard is already in the works on trying to get a pet up for charity for the southern storms ;)
Have faith in them. I know I do.

Where's Rocky my flying lion mount? He seems to have been forgotten. Oh well, I don't really care about the pet but I'm considering buying it just because it's charity.
Kiimoomii May 2nd 2011 4:09PM
Anyone else having problems purchasing the pet? I add the pet to my cart and as I'm trying to checkout. It says cart is empty! So I can't checkout. Anyone else getting this message?

I had it in the cart but when I tried to add it to my account it said, `That account is not available for play.` I promptly logged in to play.
WEIRD.
I`m giving it time to see if it works out before I contact Bliz.

Stay Classy Blizz.
No Joke.
You guys are awesome.
Magius May 2nd 2011 4:35PM
I happen to have the original but I am going to have twins tonight. Great idea Blizz and thanks for donating 100%!
In fact I hope they think too about donating at least part of the proceedings from that new flying lion mount coming down the pipeline. :)

I'm definitely in on this. I really love how Blizzard is proactively responding to global concerns and simultaneously carving a significant niche for gamers to impact real life. I look forward to seeing just how much this move raises for people in need.

Damnit! I just spent my last little bit of cash on lunch today. If I had known this was gonna come out I could have paid it to my dad and bought this cute little guy. Well, as soon as I can get 10 bucks I'm off to the pet store!
Oh well, I'll get that little guy soon enough. And great job Blizz, it's awesome that you guys are being totally selfless here, and I hope that at least some of the people in Japan are a little happier because of you.
Rock on Blizzard and FOR THE HORDE!
Dekota May 2nd 2011 5:39PM
For Tha Horde Brotha/Sista!
May your efforts to obtain this pet be swift! /salute!

How about donations for the tornado victims
Imnick May 2nd 2011 5:23PM
When will Blizzard learn, 10 euros != 10 dollars? ):
In this case it's fine because I am donating more to charity, but in most cases it is very frustrating
Zaniac May 3rd 2011 8:30AM
Actually, when will you people learn, that 10$ = 10€ when the company is US based.
There are quite a lot of additional costs involved in transferring the material to the EU. Even digital material.
No, the additional costs doesn't necessarily make it a true equation, but it's close enough that they may as well round it up.
In any case, it's a moot point. As long as people buy it at those prices, they are justified.
Imnick May 3rd 2011 3:13PM
Are there really costs to distribute purely virtual goods through the internet?
Even when they have an office in the EU?
This is news to me, I'm not saying you're lying or anything but I'd like to know more so I don't sound so stupid in future, if this is true
