Ol' Grumpy's first week with Patch 4.1

This time, I'm here to explain how to adjust to the new realities of patch 4.1, our two new heroic instances Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman, and our Call to Arms feature in the dungeon finder. I've noticed some weeping, some wailing, and some gnashing of teeth over these new introductions with the passing of our first week with patch 4.1, and I'm here to help.
First off, calm down already. The Call to Arms feature didn't trap you in a deserted old house outside of town and murder everyone from the camp but you and that cute guy you've always liked from the other camp. It didn't steal your dog, kick your car, or write nasty things about your ma and pa on the back of the barn, either. And while both ZA and ZG provide more challenge than the previous tier of heroics, they didn't steal your cattle or set your grave on fire, either. In short, the level of consternation and yes, even whining about this has been entirely over the top. These instances are puggable with a little luck and some work, and CTA has shortened queue times, which was its only real goal.
So what should you do? Well, being an irascible old curmudgeon, I will happily tell you what to do. Especially if it keeps you off of my lawn. My wife just planted roses! Stay off!
The panic, it is unnecessary
I've always found that perception can easily trump reality. One of the indisputable and easily collected pieces of information for this patch is queue times. Are they shorter? Almost universally, the reports are that they are. Does that mean that CTA isn't an unvarnished attempt to bribe tank capable players into tanking? Nope. it absolutely is. It's bribery. It neither addresses nor even attempt to address any of the underlying causes (whatever they are) of the tanking (and to a lesser extent, healing) shortages. My point here is twofold.
- The situation is no worse than it was before CTA. Whatever the issues for the tank shortage might be, CTA doesn't exacerbate them in any way -- even if it doesn't fix them, either.
- Before CTA, you were just as likely to get a bad tank as a good one as you are now. The difference is, now the tank is more likely to stay to the end so that he or she can collect the bribe.
The LFD system and the CTA feature have never promised you anything but a group. All this does is try and motivate people to fill the least-filled role in the system. That's it. The sky's not falling; dogs and cats still haven't gotten timeshares. We've seen some queue improvement, and that's about all we can really say.
New instances: Harder -- and that's fine
Back in late December and early January, pugging the previous tier of heroics was often a painful horror show of broken CC, unused CC, healers going OOM and people blaming each other as fast as they could. Over time, as gear improved and players learned to adjust to the new paradigm, stuff got easier. Well-geared players could CC less and use more AoE. This was intentional; as gear improved, we were supposed to start having a slightly easier time. The Luck of the Draw buff helped as well.
With the introduction of ZG and ZA, players are once again getting a taste of what we experienced back in those earlier times. It's not really as marked because we are, generally, better geared now, but it's useful to know your CC and learn the encounters, and there's some wiping involved in that process.
Frankly, I have never seen players more likely to fall apart over a wipe than I am seeing now. I do not understand this mentality. I'm not talking giving up on a group because it wipes six times on the trash leading up to Venoxis. I'm talking dropping a group because it wiped once on Mandokir due to a miscommunication on how the new mechanics work so that no one realized they needed to kill Ohgan when he gets rezzed, or dropping after two chains are down on phase 2 Jindo because someone got unlucky trying to kite adds. In general, taking any excuse to bail on a mostly successful run because any mistake is too much. The acrimony and blame gaming is at an all time high.
This crap needs to end. No matter where you are in current raid progression, no matter how awesome you think you are, no matter what you think of the rest of the group -- if you think the slightest mistake is grounds for a tantrum, don't queue. You're just a sucking chest wound on the run, frankly, and you should go find something else to do with your too-awesome-for-the-group self. Either put your head down and do your job, or save us the time and effort of having to deal with you.
Patch 4.1 didn't destroy the world, pugging, or group dynamics. Players might manage it, but the patch didn't.

Yeah, I had a tank like you on my very first ZG, second day of the patch.
Instantly made it known that if you didnt know the run he would quit, and reminded us of how amazing he was and to just follow his experienced lead.
Needless to say, he was talking so much smack that he accidently pulled mobs, and missed his own suggestion of grabbing the green potion quick enough. Many wipes.
Lucky I'm pro heals :), so I just sat back and kept everyone up long enough to realize this tank needed to go pound sand somewhere by himself.
Yeah tanks, you're fantastical, now shut up and tank.

OMG this!

Everyone has a first time through, and some people learn mechanics faster than others. I would suggest RobBossMod if you don't like explaining the fights. Just let the mod explain it and give them time to read it. What's so hard about that?

But why do they come completely unprepared? Please tell me that you logged on day 1 of 4.1 and never read or watched a single video. That's the people I'm talking about. I ask - do you know tactics; answer - no. Why is it so hard to go to a youtube and watch 10 min of video or read a website?
I only detest absolute lack of will to prepare before playing and people leaving after one or two tries because me and the healer did not carry them through the entire instance.
I can deal with wiping 10 times if I see people are learning or just lack the gear and we need to improve to reduce incoming damage or adjust in some other way.

You must be the people I have to put up with in the runs. Nice to know you come here too. Go look up these guides and learn to play.

What was that phrase? Oh yes, "sucking chest wound".
WoW is a game. Games are meant to be fun. Lighten up.

Why do you people keep saying it's just a game? I hear it all the time. How the hell did it become main explanation for not being able to play this game at any decent level and not to bother to learn how to play it? It's not a game for 3 year olds where a nanny will pat you on the back for participation. Unless that's what you people want. How about valor points per minute spent in the dungeon? No matter if you kill anything, just for the effort. It's a game after all. Go have fun, run around, here's a lolly.
My definition of fun is completing something challenging and being good at it. Your is to get through a dungeon in 10 min like in end of WOTLK. Why do you people expect to get the same things dedicated players get? You are putting absolutely zero effort in. You'll get your 10 minut runs after 4.2 most likely. Just shut up and wait if you do not have the mental capacity to take instructions from someone who cares about playing this game and all you can do is throw fits at them when they tell you to stop and listen. Kindergarten analogy from above again. Not by coincidence. That's how most people behave these days.

I think the best thing to do is concentrate on doing the best you can do personally. Be willing to learn and don't slack off. All this talk about how other people need to lighten up, calm down, don't throw tantrums, learn their class, suck it up, CC more, be nicer, get off my lawn etc., etc. really accomplishes nothing. All you can do is control what YOU do and (hopefully) be satisfied with that.

It's not 2006. Like it or not, players have more online gaming options now than they did back then. If it ain't fun for certain players, then they're off to RIFT/Call of Duty/World of Tanks/EvE/Facebook etc...
Add to that the fact that WotLK brought in a whole slew of new players that had never experienced the old WoW paradigm and I'm not at all surprised that you're seeing what you're seeing. Not saying that it's right, but it is what it is, and you can't turn back the clock.
Asdafer May 3rd 2011 11:09AM
Yes, you can. Just stamp them out. Do you really want these people to stay in this game? I'm not saying to call them names or harass them in any way. Just keep pressing for more involvement. I know that Blizz/Activision is interested in their money but I'm not so I'd rather see them gone then destroy the game I love. Why should I adjust my standards down rather then promote the rising of them?
TonyKP May 3rd 2011 11:25AM
@Asdafer - No you can't, at least not if you are a company trying to make a profit in a free market economy. "Stamp(ing) them out" means less income for Blizzard/Activision, and that is far more important to them and their shareholders than are your standards.
Again, not saying that it's right, but you really can't turn back the clock. That ship has sailed. That train has left the station. That raid has wiped. Etc...
Blizzard will figure this out eventually. I actually thought they already had, but apparently with ZA and ZG they're back to the two hour heroic wipefest strategy, with the results that Matthew is posting about.

Speak for yourself, there. I read the fine print on that sheet my cat gave me. I have to provide a lap for at least 2 hours a day. Says so in the contract.
