The Daily Quest: Better living through science

WoW Insider's on a Daily Quest to bring you interesting, informative, and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.
We had a tank in my guild, a very good tank. Occasionally when we were learning new content, he would suggest something completely out of the box, or he'd pipe up in Vent and ask, "So what happens if I pull that guy?" When asked why, he replied "For science!" and proceeded to do whatever it was his fool bear brain thought about doing, usually with disastrous results. The moral of the story is: When a giant talking bear suggests doing something for scientific purposes, brace yourself. Bad things are about to happen.
But as far as science, progress and improvements go, we've got a handful of posts from around the blogosphere thinking up new and innovative ways of making your WoW life just a wee bit more convenient.
Is there a story out there we ought to link or a blog we should be following? Just leave us a comment, and you may see it here tomorrow! Be sure to check out our WoW Resources Guide for more WoW-related sites.

- Priest With A Cause has been running without Recount and observing the results.
- Kiss My Alas has dissected the loot-tracking addon KonferSK and posted the results on how exactly to use it.
- The World of Matticus thinktank has come up with some ways that the new in-game recruitment system could be improved.
- Sheep the Diamond proposes the paring down of the perilous Penalty Volcano. For science!

I don't think I've used "For science!" as a justification for anything in WoW yet, but it's certainly a regular part of my real-life arsenal whenever someone can't come up with a good reason to *not* do something.

I've been dabbling in a certain other MMO that doesn't have recount (because, as far as i know, no other game has recount), and boy do I miss it. I miss it a lot. I was never someone who spammed dps numbers, but recount shows so much information in such a nice aesthetic. The dps parsers for other MMO's show the info, but the interface is way uglier, it's much harder to find the information you need, there are no good pie charts, there is no simple arrows that point you to the menu you are looking for.
The other main thing I miss is seeing my dps progression with gear. For people like me who like to min-max, testing one piece of gear over another based on live fights is invaluable. Seeing things like maximum crit, mean hit/crit, are important, but even more important is to see if I'm actually missing any hits.
Even if you are not a dps monger like me, Recount really provides an incredible amount of feedback on your actions in-game. How you died, damage you took, interrupts, decurses/cleanses, purges, activity time, all presented in a very aesthetically pleasing and easy to understand package.
In my humble opinion, raiding/dungeoning without recount is like driving without a dashboard. Sure, you can do it, but you have no idea how fast your going, what your RPM's are, how much gas is in the tank, how many miles you have on your car, etc.

Recount doesn't matter if your group is going though content at a decent pace. If you get from A to B to C in a timely manner, who cares who did what. Recount starts to matter when things go wrong and you need to analyze why, such as people not switching targets fast enough, or finding out some guy slacking on DPS, or whatever.

Took a look at what the new Tier 12 Holy Paladin set bonuses mean, as well as a little bit of the loot posted at mmoc: http://towerofradiance.blogspot.com/2011/05/tier-12-armor-set-bonuses.html

Best part of the Maloriak encounter is when he yells "FOR SCIENCE!" I think of the Mythbusters or Bill Nye.
New post up on my blog (http://corath.wordpress.com), about 4.2 and personal accomplishments. How the game went from the Quel'Danas and Ahn'Qiraj model of factions progressing to a personal approach coming.

Enjoy!
