Technically, I am also a Physicist but my specialization is in Astronomy even though 2 of my 3 degrees are in Physics.
1. The Higgs hasn't been proven to be one or the other, but it's theory came from a missing spot in the scalar and vector boson multiplets. "... an essential feature of the type of theory which has been described in this note is the prediction of incomplete multiplets of scalar and vector bosons." - Peter Higgs
2. The problem with keeping up with the most recent science is that since the data is proprietary for a certain amount of time, the data may not make it out for a year or two until the paper is finished. You could look things up on arxiv and see if something is published.
