Totem Talk: Enhancing your AoE damage

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement, and restoration shaman. On Saturdays, Josh Myers tackles the hard questions about enhancement. Can we tank? Can we DPS with a two-hander? How does one shoot web? The answer to the first two is "no," and roll a hunter for the third!
Area of effect damage has long been a thorn in the side of enhancement shaman. Through all of The Burning Crusade, we had no Maelstrom Weapon. Any Chain Lightnings we wanted to use had to be hard cast, which also meant giving up our auto-attacks for 1.5 seconds. Magma Totem was our premiere form of AOE damage, even though it was a stationary totem that ticked for extremely lackluster damage over 20 seconds.
To make things worse, until Wrath of the Lich King's patch 3.2, our Fire Nova ability was actually Fire Nova Totem. This was a totem you dropped that waited 5 seconds and then exploded and despawned. The only time this was ever not a DPS loss was if you dropped it 4 seconds before adds reached you and it exploded as they got into range. Magma Totem was higher damage per second during those 5 seconds than Fire Nova Totem, but it still rendered us the lowest area of effect damage-dealer in the game.
When patch 3.2 hit, we got Fire Nova. With a talented 6-second cooldown and the ability to be activated off any of our fire totems, it seemed to be the answer to our prayers. Unfortunately, it had pathetic damage. This was mainly due to its being used as a single-target DPS spell and an AOE DPS ability; since we used it anytime everything else was on the global cooldown on single-target fights, Blizzard couldn't buff the damage to be competitive in AOE fights. As a result, enhancement AOE spent the first three expansions of World of Warcraft being as mediocre as Fox Van Allen's writing ability.

4.1 hit two weeks ago and changed enhancement AOE forever. It is no longer tied to a stationary totem like Magma Totem, but instead emanates out from any of our active Flame Shocks. We can have three Flame Shocks active at a time. It does not deal damage to the original Flame Shocked target but does hit anyone around them. This is to prevent it from being utilized as a single-target DPS ability again. It also allows us to AOE small packs of mobs without removing Searing Totem, allowing us to continue our regular single target DPS rotation while throwing Fire Novas in global cooldown gaps for some AOE damage.
Managing your Flame Shocks
The hardest part of learning to use the new Fire Nova is learning how to multi-DOT as a melee class. Death knights have Pestilence, and warriors have Rend if specced into Blood and Thunder (which 95% of don't), but no melee class has ever been in the position of needing to cast and monitor separate damage over time effects. As a result, we're going to take some tips from our warlock, balance druid, and fire mage friends, since they've been multi-DOTing since the time of the dinosaurs.
First off, you should get into the habit of using nameplates. The default keybind for bringing up nameplates is Shift-V. Nameplates show health and cast bars for enemies around you, allowing you to monitor your surroundings easily. They're something that any DPSer should be using 100% of the time.
Nameplates also come into great use when it comes to utilizing Fire Nova effectively. Using a nameplate addon -- my personal suggestion is Tidy Plates/Threat Plates -- you can set up nameplates to monitor your debuffs on an enemy. Through this, you can easily monitor all of your separate Flame Shocks as you roll them on multiple targets, ensuring you don't overwrite any.

The macro I use is:
If you're mousing over an enemy nameplate, this will cast Flame Shock on the moused-over target. If you're not mousing over anyone, this will cast Flame Shock on your target, provided it is an enemy mob.#showtooltip Flame Shock
/cast [target=mouseover,harm][target=target,harm]Flame Shock
Wrath of the spellpower weapon
The other important thing to know about Fire Nova is that current theorycrafting suggests that spellpower weapons are seeing a return. On AOE-centric fights such as heroic Maloriak during the dark and green phases, it is highly suggested that you keep a spellpower weapon pre-imbued with Flametongue Weapon ready in your bags. The ideal enchant for this spellpower weapon would be Power Torrent, though Avalanche is also passable. Hurricane makes sense because it is also good if you use the spellpower weapon for elemental/restoration, but Power Torrent would be the best for all three specs.

Our AOE system isn't elegant, and it is still a work in progress for Blizzard. It requires way more work to master than a simple Rain of Fire or a Mind Sear, and we're not rewarded for our effort by higher AOE DPS than other classes. However, learning to use and master all of your abilities, even when they're slightly annoying, is the mark of a good player and something we should all strive to be doing.

"enhancement AOE spent the first three expansions of World of Warcraft being as mediocre as Fox Van Allen's writing ability."
OOOO, SLAM!
...sorry, I ran out of constructive comments for the day.

Wait, yes I do!
When looking for a spellpower weapon to switch in as recommended, would you recommend just finding a main-hand weapon with spellpower, or would switching out both weapons for a staff be more ideal (assuming equal iLevels amongst all weapons being examined).

He also Didnt mention shadow priests multi/dot air dps.

Multi-dot* aoe*

Well, then, apparently I need to get with the program and start hating on Fox.

Aaaaaand the claws are out!

@Andrew- Definitely sub out your mainhand weapon for a onehanded spellpower weapon. Going to a staff will lose you all those nice offhand Flametongue procs and Lava Lash, among other things.
@Fox- You just wait, I'm going to write a blog about you on myspace and then make fun of you on Formspring. It's gonna be awesome.

You used "utilize" properly! I got all excited, but then you used "utilize" improperly. I might almost say you utilized "utilize" except I don't think it added any utility at that point.

Ouch... did he just roast a fellow Wowinsider writer?

With a Flame Shock.

Dispelled.

I still have so many questions. How does the AoE damage compare to single target with different number of adds, and how much does the spellpower weapon change that? To use the Maloriak example, the green phase has enough adds that FN is the way to go, but on the dark phase, single target damage might still be a large enough portion that I should keep my agility weapon?
To be honest, I haven't seen my AoE damage go higher than single target yet, but I haven't used any weapon swapping or flame shock on the nameplate.
I am very disappointed with this AoE system. I don't think Blizzard are done with it and I really have no desire to play with it as it is. I guess that makes me a bad raider.
SaintStryfe May 15th 2011 9:21PM
Agreed.
Personally, I'd really perfer if it were more like Arcane Explosion. Hey, mages got our 10 Minute Haste effect, why can't we get something of their multiple AoE abilities? It's not game breaking, just less confusing. I'd even be happy with it if it were attached to ENH only (Resto it shouldn't matter and Ele has Earthquake).
Nivella May 16th 2011 2:56AM
Speaking as a frost/arcane Mage, with an 84 ehn shaman alt: Trade ya. You melee types are more suited to effectively wading through mobs and casting something like arcane explosion.
My arcane side would just adore having my arcane explosion epicenter around my target (or even by things effected by Slow).
We could both get what we want and neither of our AoEs would feel so broken.

I have it set up so I can switch bars with a (shift, mouse scroll up) move on my paladin. The paladin's AoE stuff is on one bar, single target on the main. One of my AoE bars is a focus macro that judges and sets that as a focus. I go tabbing around the group spreading my Seal of Truth's love to everyone and get back to the main target when I think there are enough numbers scrolling on the screen.
This can be done with Flame shock. You set your original target as the focus, beat on him, wait till the seconf FS is ready then tab. Take note of where in the group that new guy is. Go back to number one. When FS 3 is ready, click on someone on the other side of the group, most times it won't be your #2 target. Apply, back to #1 and enjoy the pain.
Really, considering I was seeing warlocks with triple my DPS in Mount Hyjal on my shaman, having one that could compete should be something you guys are happy about, not complaining that it is hard.
Shaman have always had to do 3 times the work to get 75% the damage. This isn't something new. 14 pt priority lists when guys with 5 items were doing much higher dps? Yep. Prior to this you had to hope no one moved to do decent AoE damage or depend on a moron chained to a stick with a long cool down.
The new system is at least decent and allows decent damage for mediocre players while giving better players much better damage. Before skill wasn't important. Stick + FN on CD = same no matter how good.
Josh Myers May 16th 2011 11:31AM
I'm honestly not positive on Dark Phase weapon swapping. I'd be inclined to say it'd be higher DPS to swap to a spellpower weapon for the entire phase.
The thing about AoE is it really slides easily into our single target rotation. Slip mouseover flame shocks in where you'd earth shock and fire nova in GCD gaps, and you can maintain your single target rotation wile aoeing.
SaintStryfe May 15th 2011 9:18PM
... Or you could just be in a good, well-constructed group, with a balance of single-target and AoE so you can focus on what you do well and let your Mages, Hunters and Rogues handle the multi-targets?
anchorite82 May 15th 2011 9:33PM
But doing what aoe you can is important for those phases, especially when its important that the adds go down. It's also what separates the good players from the bad.

Feral druids pre-swipe fix were melee that dealt with multi dot. Still do on many fights.
