Speaking as a frost/arcane Mage, with an 84 ehn shaman alt: Trade ya. You melee types are more suited to effectively wading through mobs and casting something like arcane explosion.
My arcane side would just adore having my arcane explosion epicenter around my target (or even by things effected by Slow).

We could both get what we want and neither of our AoEs would feel so broken.
