Why the change? We have no idea. It could be a temporary change while Blizzard works on an issue with the old login screen -- or perhaps it is the end of roaring, animated dragons when you log in to the game. The particular art used is gorgeous, obviously, and it's one of my favorite shots of Deathwing.
The reasoning behind the change will most likely come out soon. Tin foil hat speculation puts it anywhere from people's having issues with the login screen and just not loving roaring dragons (even after the toning down of said roaring) to using a new login screen that reflects the next tier of raiding. We don't know! My guess is that we will know soon, however.

OMG SAME. I'm used to going password > tab > authenticator so now when I don't remember that it's different I end up erasing my e-mail address, bleh.

I know tons of people will disagree with me, but with them toning down the roar from Deathwing, it's kinda like...

The self acclaimed "Aspect of death" is in fact, a giant flaming death dealing kitten folks.
(Reminds me of Jackie Chan adventures where Jade turns the dragon (forget spelling) into a rabbit, and he floats around shooting eye lasers)

The problem with the roaring is that if it isn't really roaring, it isn't really a dragon, you know? At the same time, roaring is loud and obnoxious. I am all for an animated screen, but a big roaring dragon is a little over the top. I thought they did a really good job with Deathy though and hope it returns.
Although, I wouldn't mind if we get a picture of the firelands portal with animated fire and lava for 4.2 though. It's very iconic and symbolic of the patch and doesn't involve roaring dragons.

It's not really new. Trial accounts have had this login screen all along: I saw my friend's login screen a few months ago when he was trying out the game and got very confused when Deathwing didn't move!
But yeah. Not new. Probably just some sort of bug in the PTR that changed the login to the trial account login screen.

Fun fact:
If you open the PTR to the log in screen and let it sit for awhile, at about the same time the Live version of Deathwing would roar and shake the screen, you'll see the picture of this Deathwing shake too.
I didn't have my sound on at the time, so you may also hear the roaring. Enjoy.

I'm still hoping that one day Blizzard will start coming up with new login screens for each raid tier like Mat alluded to.
I would love for the 4.2 login to just be the view of Ragnaros in his pool doing various idle animations, waiting for us.

I agree, but I doubt they would put as much work into them as they have the last too.
In addition, I would also love them to have random queue points in the log-in music. It's a 12 minute track which I love, but I HATE the first minute of it now.

Honestly, i hope they are changing the login screen. I honestly was just syaing to myself yesterday that I am bored with the current login screen, even though it has only been a few months. yes I know Vanilla/BC/Wrath always had the same screen, but I'm hoping it keeps changing over Cata.
Something with Rag would be awesome, would it not?

He still looks totally ridiculous with that jaw. Apparently this dragon never has to eat anything except... off the ceilings of caves or out of the air above him or something. Anything he tried to eat off the ground or anywhere below him, his chin would drag.
Honestly, if I ever go to fight this creature I'll lose right from the start due to uncontrollable fits of laughter at his stupid jaw

Oh he can eat off the ground. All he has to do is push his chin along the ground like a plow, and whatever he's eating will get pushed into his mouth.
Yeah, his chin is pretty ridiculous.

Deathwing doesn't eat berries he finds on the ground, I bet. Probably large animals...like other dragons.
Or he just eats in human form?

Yeah. After that one time the 'berries' turned out to be fresh bull Elekk poop and almost put his fire out completely. Say, I wonder if our heroes have considered that as a weapon.

Maybe it means they're going to finish repairing the SW ramparts soon.
...Which I would be fine with. I liked it for the first few months, but it's getting kinda old.
I just hope they didn't put the Redridge Bridge crew on the job.

Exactly. We got a brand new city while the Alliance had theirs destroyed.
The current (live) login screen makes me happy every time I see it.
