Why the change? We have no idea. It could be a temporary change while Blizzard works on an issue with the old login screen -- or perhaps it is the end of roaring, animated dragons when you log in to the game. The particular art used is gorgeous, obviously, and it's one of my favorite shots of Deathwing.
The reasoning behind the change will most likely come out soon. Tin foil hat speculation puts it anywhere from people's having issues with the login screen and just not loving roaring dragons (even after the toning down of said roaring) to using a new login screen that reflects the next tier of raiding. We don't know! My guess is that we will know soon, however.
The news is already rolling out for the upcoming WoW Patch 4.2! Preview the new Firelands raid, marvel at the new legendary staff, and get the inside scoop on new quest hubs -- plus new Tier 12 armor!Filed under: Cataclysm

I'm hoping this is temporary, myself. Seems kinda silly to change the log-in screen mid-expansion to a static image

for the record, this login screen is what appears when you download the ptr and then launch it before the log in screen is actually downloaded. this occurs with the main game too.

If it's static, it's most likely a temporary...or one to distinguish PRT's from live as mentioned. Since all login screens since Vanilla had some sort of amination in it. So I highly doubt this will ever be going live.

I may be off, but iirc this is the login screen my husband had on his live client while he was still downloading game data when he reinstalled the game last week.

Or maybe they're trying out a login screen selector? Change your login screen to one of X Cataclysm/Deathwing themed images.

That would be awesome! Except if I ever accidentally switched it back to wrath and had to hear that dragon roar I'd probably throw my computer out the window.

This is the screen shown when the installer hasn't downloaded the data for the log-in screen. I first saw it when using the Trial Installer on my friends computer. Perhaps blizz is replacing the log-in screen textures and models with hi-rez ones? wishful thinking...

Honestly, I wish they would let us choose out of all the login screens. I miss the original dark portal login screen. TBCs was kind of nice too.

Players with the Classic WoW see that login screen on live since Cataclysm release. I think if you change your config in WTF folder to "CL" account, instead of "CT", it will show this same login screen...

Just wondering, we don't fight Aspect of the Plow, so why is he on our login screen?
Is it so we're suppose to remember the insignificance of this character they built this mish-mosh expansion around. Might as well be a picture from GTA or Noblegarden (oh wait that is something we get to do in game - so not that). Maybe a picture of Cairn since he isn't in the game anymore either.

I hope they keep it, tired of the animated Godzilla 1997. If it's going to be a mini-game where he drops gems I have to line up while the real game loads then fine maybe.
