To be honest, I think the sexual dimorphism is both intentional and required to some degree. Character silhouettes is considered an important aspect of game design, and without drastically different siilhouettes players start to look like one another, and customization choices like race and sex mean far less.
With all of the heavy exaggerated gear we sport, sexual dimorphism becomes imortant. Otherwise, the sexes become indistinguishable and thus no longer a real customization option.
