Reading the first part of that submission was like stepping inside my own head. Centre elements, minimalism, etc, are so important. A UI is a UI, not a collection of addons.
I would add another element though, which is aesthetics. I go to much trouble making everything symmetrical and colour coordinated, since if I'm looking at it all the time I want it to be shiny.
