Addon Spotlight: Utilities with Bliky

Each week, WoW Insider brings you a fresh look at reader-submitted UIs as well as Addon Spotlight, which focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same. This week, Bliky will never, ever get his heroic bow.
Addon Spotlight is a collaborative effort on occasion, when you fine community folks send me addons in my email or over Twitter to use for the column. Sometimes, a guildmate or Mumble compatriot will fire off some addons that they find particularly useful. One such compatriot is hunter extraordinaire and begrudging worgen Bliky. We have a special relationship; Bliky gives me misdirects, and I send him awful and weird whispers. It's a balanced relationship.
When I asked Bliky for a few of his favorite addon utilities that might be able to help out my readers, he was happy to oblige, since he scours my columns each and every week to see if I made another terrible hunter joke about him. No, there will be no hunter jokes or snipes today. Instead, I will celebrate these recommendations, since they are some pretty cool utilities that everyone can benefit from.
Action Bar Saver
When you're playing a strict DPS class, you've got two out of your three specs chambered and ready to go whenever you need them. For the most part, the gear you collect for one spec is relatively the same for the other specs, allowing you to go from one to the other with minimal reforging and gemming. The problem comes from the dual spec dilemma of the game's saving keybindings and action bars based on your spec. What happens when you want to save more than two sets of action bar setups?
Action Bar Saver is a simple fix to the action bar issue. By typing /abs save (name), you save your current button and spells layout. By typing /abs restore (name), you will swap out your spells and abilities for the saved set. Action Bar Saver is a no-frills way to keep more than two sets of abilities ready to go without fiddling with profiles.
Let's say that you're a hunter who likes to jump between all three specs. You've got ReforgeSaver to easily manage your gear reforge profiles and Action Bar Saver to deal with the added hassle of moving buttons around that you set up. Now, you can swap between three specs whenever you need to with little downtime and setup.
While Action Bar Saver hasn't been updated in a while, the addon still works perfectly well as of this writing. At some point it might explode, but you're safe for the moment. We miss you, Shadowed. Sadface.
Download Action Bar Saver at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].

Everyone talks about Reflux as the easiest addon profile manager out there, and they are right. Hunter Bliky mentioned Reflux, and a conversation ensued. I think I've already discussed Reflux, but that might have been the constant commenting about Reflux. Who knows?! What matters, however, is how cool Reflux is.
Reflux is an addon that allows you to add specific addons and their profiles to a sort of "meta" profile that you can then switch between. For multiple characters who use different addons or different configurations of addons, this is a lifesaver. All you have to do is type /reflux create (name) to create your profile. All of your Acedb addon profiles are now saved into the Reflux profile.
Your addon does not support profiles? Well, Reflux has got your back, with just a little bit of trickery. Pop into the addon's .toc document with a text editor, look for the #SavedVariables line, and copy the addon's "name." Type /reflux add (whatever was in the #SavedVariables line), and you will get a snapshot of that addon for your Reflux profile. So far, it's worked like a champ.
Check out all the commands Reflux offers over on its Curse page. If you're looking for an easy way to save profiles and change around addons from character to character without going into each addon every single time, Reflux might be the addon for you. Don't thank me, though. Thank Bliky. Oh, and the other 9 billion people who recommend Reflux.
Download Reflux at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].
There you go: two great management utilities from my hunter buddy Bliky. If you'd like to recommend addons to Addon Spotlight for discussion because you think they are useful or cool, send me an email to mat@wowinsider.com, with the subject Addon Spotlight or something easily decipherable.
Addon Spotlight isn't complete without some addon mailbag!

Hi Mat,Thanks for the email, Hazger. Currently, my buff/debuff frame addon of choice is Raven, which I talked about recently in Addon Spotlight: Grab bag 4. It is, for me, the most competent replacement for Satrina's at the time and has some awesome options and robust customization to boot. You'll feel right at home.
I recently found your post about Satrina Buff Frames and decided to use it in my ui but the autor dont update the addon anymore. You have some alternative for this addon?
Thanks for you articles.
Hazger
Hi Mat,Thanks for the email, Orkchop. Using outdated addons, for the most part, is fine if they work. If the game is slowing down or if your framerate is being destroyed by an addon, obviously something has changed in the code that makes using that addon detrimental to your play experience, and you'll want to look for an update or new addon. With that being said, some addons are never affected by the changes to the code calls and all that jazz from patch to patch and work perfectly as long as you select "load out of date addons" from the addon screen at the character select.
Thanks for the awesome column! I'm looking for a new dot timer addon. I heard a lot about DoTimer, but when I looked on Curse, it says it hasn't been updated since December. Is it okay to use outdated addons, or should I try to only use addons that are kept up to date? Also, do you know of a good buff/debuff timer addon for a Death Knight with a Shaman alt?
Thanks,
Orkchop
As I recommended above, I like Raven for buffs and debuffs, but Sexycooldown and Forte are great, too, if you like the bar model more.
See you guys next week!

Raven is great! You can make bar timers with it too. Personally i prefer TooManyAddons for an addon switcher. It has a 'Always Load These' for each Character/Profile, and you can make an unlimited amount of sets that can be used globally or per Character to add to the Profile as needed. Just hold Ctrl when you check the boxes. Also it never goes bad on patch day!

Woot, what a good timing
Yesterday i had this problem..
My main spec is Fury and i have a geared Prot OS for guild and raid needs
but i also like to PvP in rbgs and arenas as Arms
i use bartender, but bartender only saves the layout of the bars but not the spells and macros, so everytime i switched between Prot and Arms, i had to rearrange my spells and macros =(
downloading ABS :D thanks Mathew!

ABS does not fully work in cataclysm with the new fold-out spells like teleport, portal, summon pet, etc. There's a fan update that works 100%.

Speaking of fold-out spells, is there an addon out there that allows you to build a custom fold-out in one of the spaces of your action bar? I think it wouldn't be pretty clever if you could mouse-wheel over, a curse for example, and have your curses rotate through that fixed key bind.

@Wump
Googling "wow flyout addon" gave me http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/flyoutbutton-custom.aspx

Fairly off topic, but something I want to throw out there since I know a lot of people like HudMap (And it has been featured on addon spotlight before), there is currently a mod being developed to add cataclysm encounters to HudMap at http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/hudmap-cataclysm-encounters.aspx It is currently in beta, but is almost entirely functional.

On the subject of AddOns, I just finished writing one. It's a Titan Panel plugin that replaces (and hides) the minimap tracking button called Titan Panel [Tracker].
Check it out! http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/titan_panel_tracker.aspx
Eregos ftw! May 19th 2011 8:57PM
For dots, debuffs, and buffs, I go with Inline Aura. It displays the timers right on your ability bars, putting it in a clean, easy-to-access place.

Check it out. You'll never go back!

For DoTs and Debuffs on my lock, I use Button Timers http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/buttontimers.aspx
It basically lets you create 1-4 action bars with the cooldown or DoT time (configurable) represented as a bar graph that shrinks as the timer winds down. It makes it very easy to keep track of your cooldowns without having to shift your focus to your action bars to read a number and risk looking back up and finding yourself standing in fire.

Is there an addon for automagically closing the Error pop-ups? They get rather annoying.
Raven31211 May 19th 2011 9:22PM
You can turn off the lua error messages under your interface options though I don't remember which one exactly.

Re out of date addons:
Do you have a recommendation for selecting sets of addons.
1) My everything list
2) Just enough for combat,
3) not-out-of-date
...
My performance is horrible even with 4GB and 60Mbps internet. I am sure some blame lies with my video card and some with Blizzard. But some could be addons. And it is tough to test and track those which are really out of date and those that still work but their authors are just too lazy to update the TOC.
g2g591 May 19th 2011 11:28PM
if you havn't updated recount/skada since 4.1 came out, old versions of them are known to cause horrible performance, for one place to check. I personally recommend using the curse downloader, it makes it really easy to just flip open my system tray and see if I have any out of date addons (as far as addons that are hosted via curse are concerned, but most are at least mirrored there, so its fine) , and it takes just a click per addon to update, or just one click to update everything if you pay curse some whatever per month which I do not.
Fleety May 20th 2011 6:30AM
Curse Downloader doesn't work in Linux, I use WowInterface Minion it's cross platform and it's very good. It also has a update all button you don't need to pay for.
ecwfrk May 20th 2011 8:15AM
You can use addons to find misbehaving addons. I personally use Chocolate Bar http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/chocolatebar.aspx plus Broker_CPU Memory http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/brokercpu.aspx
It tracks memory usage of all your addons and, if you turn on CPU Profiling, it will tell you how much of your CPU each one is eating up (you do that just for testing as CPU profiling being on tends to eat a lot of resources itself). Any misbehaving addons will be at the top of the list.
It won't find the ones that are slowing things down by spamming errors (turning on Show LUA Errors in the interface menu will show you those) or certain other issues, but it will find most offenders.
Fleety May 20th 2011 6:09AM
Reflux is probably very good, but as light and simple as Tekkub's Ampere? Extended with AddonSwitcher Ampere's got all the functionality and a pleasant GUI.
zubbiefish May 20th 2011 9:20AM
Ampere is more like ACP, in that it's function is to turn addons on and off from inside the game. Reflux performs a different task, it saves your addon configurations and settings. The idea being you can set up whole interface for each character, that is identical, without individually configuring each addon.
So, for example, I have my map, action bars, chat, and meters, all set up to fit in certain spots, and have a certain visual style. I can set all of them up once on my main and create a profile in Reflux. I can then log over to my alt and switch to the saved profile. Reflux will put everything where it was on my main, in the same style and with just that single command.
Reflux and Ampere are different addons for different tasks.

Sexycooldown is out of date and no longer works. Use CoolLine instead, it's the same thing.
wilson.jen May 20th 2011 2:31PM
I've been on the hunt for an addon or something similar that will sync channel numbers between characters, so I can always type the number (ie /4) and be in the same channel across all my alts. I have 2 - 3 user-created channels I join on my alts, and they almost always wind up being different numbers depending on the order I joined them in.

I've been a hardcore Satrina fan for a while. I had to rollback to a previous version to even get it to keep working properly after the most recent update a few months ago, so I was excited to hear about Raven as a replacement. However, it appears that Raven doesn't have what I consider to be the most important feature: the ability to separately configure the scaling of my buff and debuff icons. The main reason I use SBF is so I can have my debuffs placed very prominently and scaled to a much larger size than my buffs--as a tank, there's often a lot of really vital information there for me.
If Raven can't do that, it's useless for my needs. So, is it really missing this feature, or am I just looking straight past it? As far as I can tell, the only place to change the size of the icons is in the tab that affects ALL of your buffs/debuffs, instead of just one bar group.
