Breakfast Topic: Does WoW ever creep you out?
If you asked the average player to describe the overall tone of Azeroth, I'd wager that a lot of them would say that it is colorful, epic, or even downright cartoonish. But in my mind, the World of Warcraft we know sometimes takes a detour from the entertaining to the downright creepy. Whether it be intentionally scary or macabre things such as giant tarantulas in Terrokkar forest or stuff that just gives you the heebie-jeebies (like the Satanic children that walk the dusty road from Stormwind to Goldshire), WoW has a lot of things that put a shiver up and down your spine.
I've seen a lot of gross, scary or weird things in game, but it wasn't until the Shattering that I had a major creepfest moment. I was flying idly over Hillsbrad surveying the damage of the area, when I noticed bears -- except they didn't look like the bears I knew from the zone prior. They were bears ... with spider egg sacs infesting their flesh. Being a major arachnophobe and having a lot of issues with parasites and the like, I took my drake out of there as fast as I could so I wouldn't feel ill.
What about Warcraft creeps you the heck out?

Silithids. @_@ Still to this day, every time I have to deal with those buzzing little freaks, I just want to leave whatever zone I'm in and run back somewhere safe. I don't know what it is, but I'm guessing it's something about the way they move, or how their nests are these alien places with GIANT TWITCHING LEGS STRETCHING INTO THE SKY.
...yeah.

I couldn't agree more. Silithids give me the fantods.

Oh, I agree so much. The only reason I do Silithus is for the Exploration and Quest Achievements. Otherwise, I run screaming. I hate those bugs.
Don't get me wrong, I love Creepy. I love Duskwood during Hallows End. hehe. And other creepy zones, I just hate the over-sized bugs and their twitching hives.

Clicked on this post just to say.

I actually squawked and jumped backwards when I first saw the GIANT TWITCHING LEGS in Tanaris. Oh my freaking gods. Fortunately, my horror has eased down into a creeped-out fascination.
My latest freakout moment happened when I went into The Master's Cellar under Kara for the quests down there. I hate basements. Hate 'em. That place is downright creepy.

I'm right with you. I can't stand being next to those giant hives. The buzzing...the buzzing!
Darias.Perenolde May 19th 2011 8:20PM
Ditto. Most of the old-timers in my guild know that Darias "doesn't do bug places". It took me a LONG time to even do AQ (read: well after it was live content).
The reason? I spent most of my time through level 40 (way back in the days of vanilla when wow was barely six months old), soloing EVERYWHERE. Spent so many of those stupid quests where it was "Hey, go into that big cave of bugs and do stuff for me..." that the sounds of them make me shiver.
IRL? No problem with bugs. In game? Heebie-freakin'-jeebies.

The general player base creeps me out.

Yeah. Enough to have me keep trade on a separate tab. Occasionally when I am doing dailies on a low level toon I click over. I am almost always regretting that decision. Reading trade for more than 20 seconds and you can make a strong case against evolution.
Sarabande May 20th 2011 10:23AM
LOL . . . . true.
I haven't had trade on, on regular basis on my main in . . . I'd say well over a year, maybe two. I've had sooo much less aggravation since I turned it off.
But yeah . . . . though I don't know if CREEPY is the best word to describe most of the people. I guess you can blame the internet and the "f***wad theory" for some of it too, but so much of what I used to read in trade was beyond vile. I had to wonder, "does this person's parent (no matter that the player's age) know or approve of such things? What kind of home did this person grow up in to end up saying stuff like this??" And the appalling way people treat each other in PuGs and various chat channels, where the uninitiated is mercilessly taunted or given completely wrong answers (a real newbie, not yet knowledgeable about where to find anything or any of the great sites out there, asking a legitimate question). It brings to mind schoolyard bullies picking on the new kid, or anything they don't think is "cool" enough. In what other recreational environment are people SO unhelpful and so derisive of someone new to an encounter or of the game in general?
Yeah, OK . . . creepy in that they are CREEPS. :P

The Upside Down Sinners, underneath Kara. That made me shudder.

How do you get into the Karazhan crypts these days?
PictoKong May 19th 2011 11:04AM
Its Possible, but telling it here might get the site closed or i dunno....
I'm sure google got the answer tho

Yup. That's the only thing that has really creeped me out in 5 years of WoW. Totally cool. But profoundly creepy.
mibu.work1 May 19th 2011 8:10AM
How about this: In Naxxramas, when you enter, there are occasional screams and pleas for someone to 'kill me' as part of the ambiance. When you get to Thaddus, they happen more often, when you kill him, they stop. In-story, Thaddus was sewn together from the bodies of women and children...*shudder*
Xantenise May 19th 2011 9:08AM
Oh man, I went onto WoWhead and then WoW and listened to the soundfiles - having pugged Naxx but only a few bosses, I thought I hadn't heard the screams.
I was wrong. Hearing the sounds again, remembering them and finally knowing them for what they are... yeah, that's creepy.
To those who want the sound file commands:
/run PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Thaddius\\THAD_NAXX_LAMNT01.wav")
/run PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Thaddius\\THAD_NAXX_LAMNT02.wav")
/run PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Thaddius\\THAD_NAXX_LAMNT03.wav")
/run PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Creature\\Thaddius\\THAD_NAXX_LAMNT04.wav")
Thanks to WoWhead for these.
HappyTreeDance May 19th 2011 11:46AM
This is exactly what I was thinking. Those voices in Naxx actually turned up in a nightmare I had once.
It made the next raid I had in there extra fun.
Kriegle May 19th 2011 6:31PM
That is so freaking cool. I love that I'm still finding out things about the game after 4+ years, thanks for posting this, it's by far one of the coolest things I've ever heard of in WoW. Also makes me miss Naxx... (ducks)
