Breakfast Topic: Does WoW ever creep you out?
If you asked the average player to describe the overall tone of Azeroth, I'd wager that a lot of them would say that it is colorful, epic, or even downright cartoonish. But in my mind, the World of Warcraft we know sometimes takes a detour from the entertaining to the downright creepy. Whether it be intentionally scary or macabre things such as giant tarantulas in Terrokkar forest or stuff that just gives you the heebie-jeebies (like the Satanic children that walk the dusty road from Stormwind to Goldshire), WoW has a lot of things that put a shiver up and down your spine.
I've seen a lot of gross, scary or weird things in game, but it wasn't until the Shattering that I had a major creepfest moment. I was flying idly over Hillsbrad surveying the damage of the area, when I noticed bears -- except they didn't look like the bears I knew from the zone prior. They were bears ... with spider egg sacs infesting their flesh. Being a major arachnophobe and having a lot of issues with parasites and the like, I took my drake out of there as fast as I could so I wouldn't feel ill.
What about Warcraft creeps you the heck out?

...Goldshire.

On Moon Guard?

Probably the creepiest thing for me was wondering through Deadwind Pass for the first time in Vanilla as a 27 Nelf Warrior and finding Kara Crypts...and nothing around except dead bodies and eerie music.

My first ever character was undead, when I first started playing it was night too. Wondering around Tirisfal in the dark, with that creepy music, and corpses hanging from trees...probably not the warmest of welcomes.

The Abyssal Depths in Vashj'ir... I hate underwater areas enough as-is, but I uniquely detest how utterly dark the majority of that particular section is. Especially the stretch where there are tons of giant, elite, neutral eels... I shudder violently and have to suppress a squeal whenever one suddenly drifts in front of my vision out of nowhere, and I'm always terrified when one of the murlocs or groupers in the area jumps me, like "Oh crap, are any of my attacks going to somehow splash and/or am I accidentally going to target the eel instead of the murloc at some point and draw its attention?!"
Hate that area; just hate it. And I have to go down there way too often to farm Stormvine and Azshara's Veil... it's gotten to the point where I'll actually pay through the nose for those herbs (when they're actually on the AH), I'll hand over easily 5x what they're worth, if only to avoid the dark and the eels.........

If it helps, the best place to farm Azshara's Veil is Tol Barad Peninsula if you have water walking.
Mortenebra May 19th 2011 9:28AM
A Sea Turtle helps with farming Azshara's Veil in the Tol Barad area, too, if you lack water walking abilities and/or elixirs! Couple that with the Kaluak fishing pole and you'll never have to resurface for breath!! :D
As for Stormvine? I actually had better luck farming the Regrowth area (and anywhere that's green, in general) in Hyjal than I did in Vash'jir, though I think you might have to finish the entire area first. All that aside, flying > swimming. Good luck! :)

YES!! I'm so glad someone is finally mentioning this! Those bears in Hillsbrad give me the bad kind of goosebumps just thinking about them. It was so bad when I arrived there with my new baby shaman, I could hardly finish the quest (oh yeah - did you know there's a quest that involves plucking the eggs off the bears' backs? I ended up compulsively "cleaning" every bear just so I wouldn't have to look at that gross-beyond-imagining sight anymore).
Even writing about it now has my hair stand on end :-(
Spellotape May 19th 2011 8:43AM
This. I couldn't stand seeing those poor bears like that so I "cleaned" them all, as well :\
MattKrotzer May 19th 2011 9:45AM
Yeah, this. Those things are just nauseating... I finished the quest and got out of there as fast as I could.
Tricia May 19th 2011 9:48AM
I can't even look at those bears, they creep me out so bad. There's very little in the game that affects me so much as those bears.
Aspirisis May 19th 2011 10:02AM
I agree 100%. They reminded me of eyes on a potato. I flipped the hell out, ran away from my computer and made my kid get me out of there. I will never set foot in western hillsbrad again.

That was probably the one quest that I did where I was dry heaving while doing it. I have never been so incredibly grossed out while questing as I was with that quest. Just thinking about it right now is about to get me gagging again.
Mitawa May 19th 2011 11:06AM
Oh god, those bears.
They made me ill, like- really, ill. Quests like that are the reason I hate the new questing model. In general the system is more compelling, sure, but when you come across a quest that involves "harvesting" eggs off of the bears and you CAN'T skip it?
Quick way to ruin a zone.
Jeez, just thinking about the bears makes me shudder.
Rikansolusar May 19th 2011 11:41AM
I have a pretty strong stomach, but even that disgusted me. I had to tell a friend who hates spiders not to do that quest line, because he'd wouldn't take kindly to it.
Chetti May 19th 2011 12:42PM
I agree sooo much. When I did that quest, at first I thought we had to just kill the bears.. then I realized you had to click the eggs to 'clean' them.. It was gross. Totally gross. Ew.

The first time I came across little Pamela while leveling out in the Eastern Plaguelands I was honestly pretty horrified. Here's this innocent little ghost girl asking you for her dolly, wondering what happened to her family and...yeah, I got the heebies and proceeded to run my little shaman butt away from the Plaguelands as quick as I could. At the time even the time swallowing, bug infested labyrinths of Silithus were more appealing than the horrors found in EPL.
Throw all the buggies and baddies at me that you want, the screams and scars left by the scourge take the cake for me. /shudder
RavenJet May 19th 2011 9:11AM
Upon reading the topic line I immediately came to post exactly this. Little Pamela from Darrowshire... but interestingly though I found it creepy, upsetting and emotional - I didn't leg it out, I finished the questline - twice so far on different characters, and each time I was filled more and more with this deep and abiding feeling of hatred burning in me...
Each time I think back to little Pamela, I remember why I wanted to destroy Arthas more than I have ever hated any other WoW boss. Seriously, Deathwing is scary and bad and stuff -but he's just a gameboss... I HATED Arthas - and I hated him because of Little Pamela.
Mitawa May 19th 2011 11:57AM
I wish I could be more affected by little Pamela. Especially after hearing/watching Cranius' "Darrowshire" (http://youtu.be/1dTxcHulFBI).
Unfortunately, I'm just more disturbed by the fact that her dolly is made up of two busty female torsos and a male gnome head... and when you put them together they make an evil scarecrow. I KNOW the icons are just a game mechanic but... ugh, so weird.

When my wife did that questline the first time, she became really creeped out. Very creepy, and a great bit of lore.
