The OverAchiever: New achievements in patch 4.2

We're going to take another break from our Mountain O' Mounts series to examine upcoming achievements in patch 4.2. We got an avalanche of news on these last Friday via MMO-Champion's datamining efforts on PTR build 14117, and they all look pretty nifty.
There are 16 achievements associated with the new Firelands/Mount Hyjal daily quest area, on which I have very little information right now, so we're going to examine those later. However, that still leaves us with new pet, legendary, dungeon, and anniversary achievements.
Petting Zoo: Collect 100 unique companion pets. Reward: Pet Biscuits.
Menagerie: Collect 125 unique companion pets. Reward: Pet Biscuits.
Littlest Pet Shop: Collect 150 unique companion pets. Reward: Nuts' Acorn.

One of the characters I transferred over to the PTR was my main, who's sitting on a truly disgusting number of companion pets (though not, I was surprised to discover, disgusting enough to reach 150). To answer one of the more frequently asked questions I've seen since this achievement was announced, the Pet Biscuits here are functionally the same as Papa Hummel's Old-Fashioned Pet Biscuits, which are an absurdly fun reward from the WoW Trading Card Game. Papa Hummel's Biscuits double the size of whichever companion pet you've got out, and while they're single-use only, they're a pretty common TCG reward and stack to 250. When I first saw this achievement, I'd hoped that the reward was a permanent version of them, but of course it didn't make much sense to hand out two if that were the case ...
Which it's not. The Biscuits you'll find in your mailbox as a reward for the 100 and 125 companion pet achievements are also single-use only, and the effect disappears as soon as you log off. Cue sad face when I got kicked off the PTR server for approximately the millionth time since 4.2 went live and relogged to discover that my Black Tabby was once again a little cat. Oh, well. I've wondered for ages when WoW was going to introduce a squirrel pet (apart from the mechanical version, that is), and now we know.
Another new pet was announced in addition to Nuts -- the Creepy Crate. I'm hoping this is something like the little crate disguise you get on the Deepholm quest Quicksilver Submersion, but there's no word yet on how it's obtained.
Bear-ly Made It: Save all four prisoners before they are sacrificed in Zul'Aman on heroic difficulty.
As expected. Zul'Aman is actually an interesting case achievement-wise; the original instance eighty-sixed the Amani War Bear in the same Wrath of the Lich King content patch that introduced the achievement system in the first place. I have to think that this would otherwise have been in the game from the start and was surprised not to see it pop up alongside the Rise of the Zandalari heroics in patch 4.1.
Right now, this is a fairly tough achievement for a PUG to manage, given the general difficulty of the new and improved Zul'Aman, but it's by no means impossible -- and like the drake runs from heroic Culling of Stratholme, it's only going to get easier as the expansion advances and players amass better gear for their characters. Players in tier 11 already have a substantial advantage over their blue-geared counterparts.
As with the Zul'Aman achievement above, this isn't too surprising; we've typically gotten news of what Blizzard plans to do with WoW's anniversary celebrations far in advance (well, at least until last year). However, rather than the expected companion pet, the reward for logging on during the anniversary may be something else entirely:
- WoW's 7th anniversary tabard Right-click to change the appearance but not the effect of any currently worn tabard. Increases experience and reputation gains from kills by 7%. 10-second cooldown, instant.
Not too surprising. Every legendary weapon in the game has an associated achievement, so we knew to expect this one. The Dragonwrath quest line looks amazing so far, and it's particularly interesting in that the player's guild also gets a companion pet -- Lil' Tarecgosa -- for their trouble.
Working on achievements? The Overachiever is here to help! Count on us for advice on Azeroth's holidays and special events, including new achievements, how to get 310% flight speed with achievement mounts, and Cataclysm reputation factions and achievements.

Wait, is that a new non-combat pet? WANT!
Revynn May 19th 2011 2:16PM
The header image?
Yeah, that's the guild mini-pet you get for completing Dragonswrath.
Kook May 19th 2011 2:21PM
oh cute dragonlet, you shall never be mine... /cry
kaminari May 19th 2011 3:52PM
it's from someone in your guild completing the staff, not you personally.
Kook May 19th 2011 2:18PM
...but what does the new Squirrel pet LOOK LIKE? I must know!!
John May 19th 2011 2:24PM
If it's a squirrel with a muzzle-loaded gun (like the Thunder Bluff killer critters) - that'd be quite nice!
Fallacy May 19th 2011 2:40PM
Since it's a squirrel named "Nuts", I can only imagine that it's going to look a lot like Fark's mascot.
(I'm not providing a link to that. You'll just have to google it for yourself.)

I really hope it looks like the one from Ice Age and acts accordingly.
Imagine this: Nuts sees an acorn. He scrambles to pick it up. He grabs it. He looks around suspiciously. He cries for joy. He loses it. He sighs dejectedly.
Happy times. For us.

I posed a picture on the PTR site of WowHead. It's the stand critter squirrel model.

ever since i saw there was a pet to obtain in the new patch, i went back to do the new Archeology digs to help get me to 150. Still need to get Thing from the Tol'vir sites, but i'll still be 2 short. Sadly, i think i'll need to buy a couple of the pets they have in the store if i'm to make it prior to 4.2

I've got 151 on the PTR (and that subtracts some pets from my account) - Nuts is honestly not that shockingly great of a pet. the Fawn and the Skunk were more neat IMHO.
Still, addiction is addiction.
Skarn May 19th 2011 6:31PM
It's entirely possible that the current Nuts model is just a placeholder. Due to, ya know, PTR. The model could easily be updated later in the PTR. Please do submit feedback on the PTR forums about it though!

I'm still waiting for a Zul'Aman - Guild Edition feat of strength for having completed the level 70 version in a guild group before it went away.
Cyno01 May 19th 2011 3:02PM
There is probably no way for them to do that, considering any achievements that could be retroactive have been. That sort of data just isnt there.
Saeadame May 19th 2011 3:27PM
But wasn't there an ach for guild group Zul'Aman before 4.1? It would be fairly easy (I would think) to retrieve the data on who had that achievement... as of right now, it's just disappeared I think.

"There is probably no way for them to do that, considering any achievements that could be retroactive have been. That sort of data just isnt there. "
I'd bet there is.
There was a guild achievement for running 10-man Zul'Aman in a guild group before patch 4.1. All they have to do is turn that into a feat of strength. In the meantime, I assume the database still has a checkmark under the now obsolete entry...they can just use that to award the FoS.
Cyno01 May 19th 2011 4:25PM
Ooh, just pre 4.1. I dont know why i was thinking an achievement for back in the day at level...
Blayze May 19th 2011 4:48PM
Or use the "Zul'jin kills" part of the Statistics.
Or award it to those who handed in the Blood of Zul'jin.

"Or use the "Zul'jin kills" part of the Statistics.
Or award it to those who handed in the Blood of Zul'jin."
Just to be clear...I'm talking about the Guild Edition version of Zul'Aman. Individual players who had the Zul'Aman achievement have indeed been awarded a feat of strength. Just not the guilds, which I had assumed would have gotten one, too.

I cannot believe Blizzard couldn't come up with something better for 100 and 125 than pet biscuits. Giving a player a throw away item for such a time-consuming achievement is beyond bad form. I can only hope that these are simply placeholders, because that is just awful.
If you're art team is too swamped to make a new pet for each achievement, send me the blasted source files and I'll reskin one for you. A simple reskin is better than pet biscuits whose effects disappear after you log.
