Patch 4.2: The keyring is gone. Gozer is saddened.

Are you the keymaster?
Not in patch 4.2, Mr. Gozer The Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Volguus Zildrohar, Gozer the Travler, Lord of the Sebouillia.
Takralus has announced on Blizzard's EU forums that come patch 4.2, the keyring will be disappearing -- a fact that many people have already noticed on the PTR. Any keys that you don't need for the game will vanish into the ether, potentially giving you a very small amount of gold, and any key that you do need to access some part of the game will be transferred to your inventory.
We bid you farewell, keyring. You've been in our toolbar since patch 1.11, and that's special.

World of Warcraft has evolved quite a bit since the day the Keyring bag slot was added in patch 1.11. When implemented, this Keyring provided players with a convenient way of storing dungeon, quest, and other keys automatically. Back when the largest bag was a mind bottling 18 slots - rumoured to be bottomless - the Keyring helped save precious bag space. But as things tend to do, time went on, bags got bigger, and designs for gating content (literally and figuratively) evolved through the years.
In today's Azeroth, keys don't really serve much of a purpose except to take up physical storage space from the game (which could be used for other awesome stuff), and visual interface space on yours. Because of this, we've decided to get rid of the Keyring in order to free up some user interface space for exciting new features. This change could also potentially allow us to play around with the amount of default storage space you're allotted down the road. So, what does this mean for you and the keys you might not have looked at in the last couple expansions or so?
We're currently working on the implementation of a system in patch 4.2 which will handle the removal of the Keyring, while causing you as little hassle with keys as possible. Some keys which no longer serve a purpose in the game will automatically be removed from your inventory. In return, you'll be compensated for them with their respective vendor sell prices in gold. You might also have random leftover quest keys from outdated quests, or quests which were removed in Cataclysm. Keys that fall into this category have no use and no sell price, as they are labelled as quest items, and will be automatically removed from your inventory. Any remaining keys that might still potentially serve some use in the game will be transferred into your regular inventory. If there is not enough space in your inventory to hold any leftover keys once patch 4.2 hits live realms, the keys will be placed in a backlogged storage system. Once space is made for a backlogged key, the key will take that space after you log out or switch to a new zone (i.e. changing continents, entering a dungeon or Battleground, etc.).
We are continuing to work on new ways of allowing you to better manage the storage of various items in the game, and it is our goal to make sure the removal of the Keyring causes as little inconvenience to you as possible.

I was a little saddened when they removed a bunch of my keys at 4.0.3. Even if they had no use anymore, I would have liked to keep them as mementos of my Vanilla accomplishments.

I was even more disappointed at the lack of a Keymaster feat of strength. The achievement just up and disappeared.

Why you little...
venicide May 23rd 2011 12:50PM
i dont want relic coffer keys in my bags when i do BRD.
are they getting rid of keys like that?
what about the celestial planatarium key?
Mattimus May 23rd 2011 1:01PM
Also, what about BC Heroic keys? I wonder if those will still require Keys to access... I should hope not, they've required keys for far too long.
Sterb May 23rd 2011 3:45PM
@Mattimus
Looks like they'll be removing key requirements on BC content. It's only 2.5 years too late!

NOOOOOO!!! While bags have indeed grown so has my need for more space. Don't take away my key ring and stick needed keys into spaces that I actually use.
On the other hand turning that space into tabard storage would be nice... hmmm

This is what I'm most concerned about. I'm not even raiding this expansion and my bags are still full with a Tank set, DPS extras, prof items, and a meager PvP set among other miscellani. If they just put them in our bags with everything else it seems like a cruel sort of joke, as players have been complaining for years now about bag space only to have more slots forcefully taken from them.
Any word or clarification on what "moved to bags" really means? I did my BC rep grinds, I've got more Outland keys than I'd like to put in my bags...

I has sooooooo many blacksmithery keys in my ring...
ugh.. this is gonna munch my precious bagspace to bits..
Swifteye May 23rd 2011 12:57PM
My Blacksmith is going to be buried in stacks upon stacks of every level of Skeleton Key that exists... curse my horrid tendency towards hoarder-ism!!
... but I can't get rid of them... what if I just happen to find eighty lockboxes that require 225 skill to unlock someday?! *sadface*
Shadowwind May 23rd 2011 1:43PM
Well, you could always use them on the door in H VC. I found out that it can be opened by as little as a silver skeleton key, and you don't get the mobs to spawn. I've never had the nerve to try it during the Vanessa fight, though. Too afraid I'd break it.
Harmeister May 23rd 2011 2:55PM
I feel that too... I have hundreds of skeleton keys stacked up in there. Maybe they can make them stack higher??? Or work like shards and old crappy keys can be combined into newer shiney ones that might actually be useful?
Tirrimas May 23rd 2011 12:57PM
Dammit. I'm currently in the process of getting keyed for Kara!
I'm with Samutz - I want my keys!
Udderpowered May 23rd 2011 12:58PM
So...is this catering to casuals or hordcores? I need to prepare my needless whine accordingly.
Gnogmengnon May 23rd 2011 1:46PM
Casual, because the hardcore people don't mind the grind to become attuned.
Jari May 23rd 2011 1:52PM
Casuals.. I think.
This is a slap in the face for everyone who does BC heroics!
Shade May 23rd 2011 2:05PM
Hardcores because keys go in your bags now, so casuals can't just fill up their slots with useless shit now. They have to actually go to vendors and banks and DO something. GOD FINALLY.
(your move :P)
Noyou May 23rd 2011 2:57PM
LOL what? Hardcore > raiders hate doing anything that doesn't revolve around raiding. Hell they even hate raiding. I'm quite certain they are adrenaline/gear junkies. The people that don't mind getting attuned are hard core questers. I am not a hard core quester but I didn't mind getting attuned in outlands to run heroics. Well at least on my first toon. As far as this move goes I don't think it "caters" to anyone. Least of all the devs who are charged with the task of getting rid of it without totally borking things. Think of how many frustrated people will be trying to get into old raids or heroics only to find the error message "key needed" or some such to get a chance at farming x mount or rep.
Levi May 23rd 2011 12:59PM
Keys are an odd thing. As a rogue, I rarely think of them since I can pick my way through almost any lock. Forgot completely abt the heroic BC keys, until last night when we went for the mount in setthek halls...useless keys, you will be missed. Useful ones....darn you for taking up precious bag space. Increase my puny backpack!!!!! Erm.... sorry about that
