I was talking to a good friend of mine about tanking racials recently, and we ended up debating the usefulness of the Troll Regeneration racial. We came to a rough decision that brief fights--about six to eight minutes or shorter--would result in the Tauren racial overall providing more total health coverage (and subsequent bonus to abilities scaling with total health such as Rune Tap, Death Strike, etc) than trolls. However we then came to theorize that the troll racial would first equal the Tauren racial's *initial* health gain in about two minutes of combat (useful to know for situations you might not have a healer, such as PvP), and only surpass the health coverage through abilities after that seven and a half minute mark or so. We did conclude together that the Troll racial does heal more per minute than the tauren racial grants over that minute via additional self-healing through abilities, and that his healing also surpassed the total health granted to taurens at that around six to eight minute mark (overhealing being the variable of estimate).TL;DR: In shorter fights, the (nerfed) Tauren health bonus is certainly the better option, however in the long run (such as normal boss fights going ten to fifteen minutes), the Troll racial pulls ahead in overall survivability and health generation and only gets more useful as a fight goes on.

It's also worth noting that the Troll racial will scale with your *gear* as well (goes by total health) while the Tauren racial does not (goes off base health). So this is also a deciding factor to consider. :3

Gonna quote something from Wowhead here that was much more conclusive than my research was."Regeneration has become more useful in Cataclysm.Currently, it appears that Health Regeneration has been standardized to one percent of maximum HP every two seconds, regardless of your Spirit, when out of combat and zilch when in combat. Trolls, however, regenerate 1.1% of their HP every two seconds out of combat and 0.11% of their maximum HP every two seconds in combat.Ultimately, a Troll regenerates 0.055% of their HP every second in combat. This may not sound tremendous at first glance, but over the course of a five minute fight it means a Troll has the potential to regenerate 16.5% of their total HP (modified downward by how much time they spend at maximum HP). Given a source of steady, constant damage, it wouldn't be unfair to claim regeneration could easily increase your total HP by 15% over five minutes. If a fight lasts six minutes, that number rises to nearly 20%.A huge mark in favor of Troll Tanks."

I wonder if the troll regen ever catches up to a draenei using Gift of the Naaru on themselves on CD? (20% of max HP over 15 seconds, 3m cooldown. I personally macro it to Vampiric Blood for a little extra punch if they're both up, and save it for when I really need the healing, but it's a surprisingly potent cooldown.)

Thank you, Raz! Now I feel better about my prot warrior being a troll.
