It's always so interesting to me to see someone else's version of events. Here is what happens to me against a mage:

Me: sap

Mage: trinket, blink, cast, kite, cast, kite, cast, etc...

Me: dead.

Agreed, perhaps its me but I am rarely able to beat a mage. Of course, by mage I mean frost mage. I can easily see how a duel w/ an arcane or even fire mage would be pretty similar to what you said Silva.
