Patch 4.2 New Hunter Pets: All 8 rares found

The eight new pets include two spirit cats (Ahnka and Magria), a spirit owl (Ban'thalos), and five uniquely colored lava spiders from the Firelands (Solix, Skitterflame, Kirix, Anthriss, and Deth'tilac). Each of these creatures provides a unique challenge to the hunter trying to tame them. Taming one of these unique creatures will be a mark of prestige to the hunter toting them around, not only for their rarity. Some of the lava spiders have some pretty tricky mechanics; Deth'tilac, especially, feels like a marathon.
Here's a compilation of all of the new eight hunter rare taming challenges coming in patch 4.2.

Check out our coverage of Ahnka from yesterday.
Abilities Deals damage based on the amount of armor the player is wearing.
How to tame Take off your armor to survive Ahnka's onslaught and tame.

Check out the Petopia thread on Ban'thalos.
Abilities
- Harsh Moonlight Call upon the harsh light of Elune to burn foes. Deals Arcane damage over 4 seconds.
How to tame Ban'thalos flies very high in the air, so careful pulling to survive the fall is necessary. If you survive the fall and Ban'thalos is still aggroed to you, you'll need to put down a well-timed Frost Trap and pop Deterrence to mitigate the Harsh Moonlight damage, which will wreck your day. Survive all this and begin taming when Ban'thalos is trapped. Congrats on your ghostly owl.

Works similar to Ahnka -- same mechanics, but a blue glow instead of a white/clear glow.

Check out the thread on Solix over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities:
- Flashfire Attack speed increased by 1,000%, movement speed increased by 100%.
- Blazing Speed Too fast to tame.

Check out the thread on Skitterflame over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities
- Superheated Too hot to safely tame.
- Burning Frenzy Damage increased based on current energy. If energy reaches zero, creature dies.

Abilities
- Toxic Presence Deals nature damage to all nearby enemies. Deals additions damage to pets and minions.

Check out the thread on Anthriss over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities Anthriss shoots a web at you that will kill you unless you submerge yourself in lava.
How to tame Staying submerged and taming will negate the effects of the web and allow you to tame this pet.

Check out Parkour's epic thread over on Petopia on his Deth'tilac tame.
Abilities
- Deth Strike Deth'tilac strikes an enemy, instantly killing them. This attack cannot be dodged, blocked, or parried. Costs Deth'tilac 10% of maximum health.
- Aura of Deth'spair Aura that reduces healing by 99%.
- Deth Metal Gains speed when he isn't being damaged.
The alternative is to try to get him to use Deth Strike enough that it wrecks his health until he is tamable.
Congratulations to Butters for the awesome kite and tame on Deth'tilac.

Yeah, I'm with Wilk. I don't think there should necessarily be something fun and unique for every class (although that would be cool, and I'm still sad about them taking out all the different class quests), but I wish they could put in more stuff just out in the world unrelated to any quest that is fun and minigame-like and whatnot for everyone. It IS sort of annoying that Hunters get this stuff when no one else does. And I don't think QQing over it is going to make similar things less likely; the community saying that they want to see this sort of thing for everyone will hopefully get it spread out a bit. Blizzard's historically listened when the majority of the playerbase wants something and it's not just a vocal minority.

@Jatt Not to rain on your parade but this mini game/spirit beast thing is only available to 1/3 of the hunters out there. Even then, no one really plays BM.
I just started gearing my hunter for raiding, man I love playing a hunter. BUT I'm on a pvp server... even if I wanted to tame any of these, I'd need some bodyguards lol. It's a cool little feature but more of an annoyance to me. Meh, enjoy the challenge BM hunters.

I hope Deth'Tilac has 38M hp when tamed.
"Oh yeah, hey. MT? Ummm.... sorry, but we've got another tank now, you'll have to go."
razion Jun 2nd 2011 5:50PM
Perhaps that dream for BM hunter tanks isn't too far off after all... *stares off wistfully*
raingod Jun 2nd 2011 5:16PM
Sadly there's nothing here to make me want to go after them. Spiders and cats-spirit aside are a dime a doze; but I do want a Hydra.
Arrohon Jun 2nd 2011 5:18PM
My only disappointment is that 5 of them are all spiders. 2 are spirit cats. I wish that all 8 could be different creatures but they should be fun to tame.
Revynn Jun 2nd 2011 6:36PM
Agreed. The Spirit Owl is cool, but two reskinned Gondrias and 5 spiders of varying colors aren't particularly exciting to me (unless one or more of those colors was impossible to get elsewhere, maybe a white one?). Admittedly, I've never been a fan of spiders in the first place.
I guess I'm just spoiled by the awesomeness that is Loque'nahak.
Anathemys Jun 2nd 2011 6:53PM
Hey, I don't know about you, but I foresee me doing four things.
1. Tame one of the cats
2. Name the cat Garfield.
3. Tame one of the spiders with Garfield out.
4. Laugh my ass off and go get some lasagna.
Tomaj Jun 2nd 2011 5:19PM
Those aren't *ALL* BM-only pets, are they? If so, I'll be sad. This is really the only question I have. If they're all exotic, then I'm not going to bother.
Tomaj Jun 2nd 2011 5:21PM
To add, I am asking because it's a little difficult to tell if those are normal spiders or shale spiders.
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 5:32PM
They are spider models, not shale-spiders so you should be good to go w/ them.
Marshall Jun 2nd 2011 5:41PM
The spiders certainly seem to be standard spiders, just lava-colored.
Natsumi Jun 2nd 2011 5:53PM
If you're feeling too lazy to do these, you can tame spiders that look exactly like them without all the fuss. They come in Red, Orange, Yellow, and Green. Blue however is exclusive to that 38mil monstrosity, good luck with that.
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 5:55PM
Yeah, I think the purple one is the one I'll be setting my sights on. XD I'm still looking forward to that epic-tame!
VioletArrows Jun 2nd 2011 5:20PM
*most are spiders* FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUU-
(At least that takes care of any temptation to come back.)
Ilmyrn Jun 2nd 2011 5:23PM
Sounds like a lot of fun (Well, maybe not the Deth'tilac one). Makes me wish I played a hunter.
Oh well. I'm sure that one of my guildies will rope me into letting Deth'tilac one shot me a few times so she can tame it.
Natsumi Jun 2nd 2011 6:03PM
Leveling a character from 1 to 85 takes approximately 3 days /played if you have some Heirloom items and the 10% Exp gain Guild Perk. That's assuming you forgo tradeskills and secondary skills. It's also slightly faster if you're a tank or healer as you can level while standing next to your trainer once you hit level 15 and dungeons should fill out your empty slots fairly quickly.
Hunters won't be able to do that, but you can quest and/or do trade skills in between dungeons to speed yourself along. With the way skills level with you now you can do fairly decent for several levels without actually training your new skills (Arcane Shot spam can get you up to level 15 with no issues as long as you have a BoA Ranged Weapon)
Rob Jun 2nd 2011 7:46PM
"leveling to 85 takes 36 hours". Yeah right. If you have full heirlooms, always rested XP, and have leveled 10 alts, maybe then. Maybe. And...So what. What exactly is the point of this, if just to say everyone sucks except me because I can powerlevel the best.
Diop Jun 2nd 2011 8:39PM
Firstly three days is not 36 hours, but 72 hours and secondly the point was quite clearly that it is not too late to start and level a hunter to max level before 4.2 comes out, and not mere boasting.
Sonalita Jun 3rd 2011 8:55AM
@rob l2math 3 days = 3 x 24 = 72 hours and 72 hours to level 85 with full heirlooms and guild bonuses is EASILY doable
