Patch 4.2 New Hunter Pets: All 8 rares found

The eight new pets include two spirit cats (Ahnka and Magria), a spirit owl (Ban'thalos), and five uniquely colored lava spiders from the Firelands (Solix, Skitterflame, Kirix, Anthriss, and Deth'tilac). Each of these creatures provides a unique challenge to the hunter trying to tame them. Taming one of these unique creatures will be a mark of prestige to the hunter toting them around, not only for their rarity. Some of the lava spiders have some pretty tricky mechanics; Deth'tilac, especially, feels like a marathon.
Here's a compilation of all of the new eight hunter rare taming challenges coming in patch 4.2.

Check out our coverage of Ahnka from yesterday.
Abilities Deals damage based on the amount of armor the player is wearing.
How to tame Take off your armor to survive Ahnka's onslaught and tame.

Check out the Petopia thread on Ban'thalos.
Abilities
- Harsh Moonlight Call upon the harsh light of Elune to burn foes. Deals Arcane damage over 4 seconds.
How to tame Ban'thalos flies very high in the air, so careful pulling to survive the fall is necessary. If you survive the fall and Ban'thalos is still aggroed to you, you'll need to put down a well-timed Frost Trap and pop Deterrence to mitigate the Harsh Moonlight damage, which will wreck your day. Survive all this and begin taming when Ban'thalos is trapped. Congrats on your ghostly owl.

Works similar to Ahnka -- same mechanics, but a blue glow instead of a white/clear glow.

Check out the thread on Solix over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities:
- Flashfire Attack speed increased by 1,000%, movement speed increased by 100%.
- Blazing Speed Too fast to tame.

Check out the thread on Skitterflame over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities
- Superheated Too hot to safely tame.
- Burning Frenzy Damage increased based on current energy. If energy reaches zero, creature dies.

Abilities
- Toxic Presence Deals nature damage to all nearby enemies. Deals additions damage to pets and minions.

Check out the thread on Anthriss over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities Anthriss shoots a web at you that will kill you unless you submerge yourself in lava.
How to tame Staying submerged and taming will negate the effects of the web and allow you to tame this pet.

Check out Parkour's epic thread over on Petopia on his Deth'tilac tame.
Abilities
- Deth Strike Deth'tilac strikes an enemy, instantly killing them. This attack cannot be dodged, blocked, or parried. Costs Deth'tilac 10% of maximum health.
- Aura of Deth'spair Aura that reduces healing by 99%.
- Deth Metal Gains speed when he isn't being damaged.
The alternative is to try to get him to use Deth Strike enough that it wrecks his health until he is tamable.
Congratulations to Butters for the awesome kite and tame on Deth'tilac.

finally some pet taming that hunters can get excited about!
i don't have a hunter but i'm happy that they put something of prestige in the game for them. props to bliz for doing this.
Xlo Jun 2nd 2011 5:54PM
Excited for five spiders that look different in terms of color only? Sure you get one but if it isn't the blue awesome one then the oof is taken out.
WoWie Zowie Jun 3rd 2011 7:12AM
exactly how much time did you want them to spend on a part of the game that only 1 out of 10 classes get to partake in?
seeing the color of the spider should get the point across what kind of hunter ypu are
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 5:29PM
Wow, now I feel silly trying to be all positive yesterday. :( Two Gondria re-skins, one owl (albeit cool looking) and the rest are spiders of different colors? Yeah, I'm disappointed. Was Loque the last truly unique skin we got on a new beastie?
DAMN! I was telling everyone to stop whining yesterday but I'm right in there now. I hate it when that happens. I may still tame these for the challenge but my excitement has gone from 11 to 2.
I apologize for my optimism.
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 5:37PM
I want that FIRE RAVEN CONSARNIT! XD
My raging optimism is not entirely quenched since I have a small hope that there may be changes to the models before it goes live. /crosses fingers /makes offerings to the Hunter Gods
Natsumi Jun 2nd 2011 5:49PM
I want that devil hound made of Lava and Bones to be tamable, that thing looks sick!
Xlo Jun 2nd 2011 5:53PM
Yep and all the negative comments are being voted down too, but these pets aren't anything worth looking forward to AT ALL. If you are good for you but doesn't change the fact that five of them are just different colors at least the scorpion rare had different colors and yet were the same animal. All these new rare pets show the laziness Blizzard has been going in terms of designing. They get the idea, people get excited for 8 unique pets then they drop the ball. Not cool bliz not cool.
Tribunal Jun 2nd 2011 5:52PM
Ehh, the challenges are still a little cool. And it is still the PTR!! *fingers crossed*
The owl model is a complete copy of another pet.
blancester Jun 2nd 2011 5:53PM
I do not have a hunter, but I do hope some of those spiders are changed. Like in Cata beta in Vashj you had sting rays, then they put in the seahorses later on.
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 6:02PM
@ Tribunal - The owl is the same "spectral" model, in a sense as the ghostly jade owl but without the webbed wings. This one also has much added glow-effects that trail from the wings and tail. Yes, it's similar but it's not an exact copy of anything that exists in game right now. I'm familiar with all the "special" models. Olm is the other "spirit" owl and he's completely different.
I give them a bit of a pass on that one. He'll be a pretty tame. :) I'm far more disappointed about the Gondria re-skins and different colors of the exact same spider. :(
I don't really understand when they have the brand-new firehawk and raven models in the game that at least one of these wasn't one of those. :( I still have hope. I choose to. XD
Maribel Jun 2nd 2011 7:17PM
Yeah, the models are disappointing. I'll probably try the tames just for bragging rights, but most will be going into the stable shortly afterwards.
Except for that owl. He will be mine. My first hunter must have a winged pet with her at all times, and so now she can finally have a spirit beast.
MusedMoose Jun 2nd 2011 7:27PM
I have to admit that I'm less than thrilled with there being so many spiders as well, and the transparent cat model never really appealed to me. However, I'm more than a little intrigued by the challenges, and will probably seek out all of these pets to tame just to say I did it. My hunter considers himself a bounty hunter as well as a master of beasts, so this is the sort of thing I have to do with him.
Also, here's to hoping that those aren't the final models. We might get lucky about that. ^_^
loop_not_defined Jun 2nd 2011 8:02PM
Aren't the spiders a brand new model and set of skins? I'm not seeing any existing models, let alone skins, outside of Firelands.
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 8:18PM
@ loop - indeed the spiders are new to Firelands it's just that they are each exactly the same, save for color. And then, there are regular spiders out there with all of the colors save, the blue. That's where the dissapointment comes from. That and the fact that the kitties are just Gondria with a dye job. ;)
Bronwyn Jun 3rd 2011 8:21AM
I get that the spirit beasts are a bit disappointing, but come on- those spiders are awesome.
Sure it would have been nice if more of them were unique colors, but still. the challenge of taming them is the really cool part anyway.
Also, why do I keep hearing about Loque being the last unique pet tame? Terrorpene may be a slight re-model of a turtle (I say this because I'm pretty sure normal turtles don't have volcano horns :P) but he's easily the coolest and most unique looking pet in the game :p
I wish they'd make the bone raptors beasts so I could tame them. My undead hunter would love one.
PocketFox Jun 3rd 2011 10:00AM
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I don't even log on that much anymore, but I've been semi-excited for 4.2, and it moved into real excitement when I heard about 8 new pets specifically designed to give hunters a challenge beyond camping spawn points for a week.
Theeeeen they come out with this. Woo? I'll be over here with my Loque'nahak. :(
Iirdan Jun 2nd 2011 5:44PM
I am absolutely thrilled!
Unique models? Nope. But does that really MATTER? I have my favorite pet already (good ol' Jinx the Springpaw) and will continue to use it - but now I have goals, I have something to actually HUNT. These are exactly what I was hoping for - tamable pets that are challenging, that take skill, planning, coordination to pull off - only the best of Hunters will call these pets their own, and that is the most alluring concept to me.
I will gladly bag as many of them as I can to join my stable.
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 5:49PM
I'm still excited about the taming-challenge For Sho'! :)
loop_not_defined Jun 2nd 2011 8:05PM
Aren't the spiders using a new model? It doesn't exist outside of 4.2.
Iirdan Jun 2nd 2011 8:06PM
Yeah, the models are new, but there are some normal mobs that use the model that are tamable. Nevertheless, it IS an awesome model, and these rare ones have some exclusive colors.
