Patch 4.2 New Hunter Pets: All 8 rares found

The eight new pets include two spirit cats (Ahnka and Magria), a spirit owl (Ban'thalos), and five uniquely colored lava spiders from the Firelands (Solix, Skitterflame, Kirix, Anthriss, and Deth'tilac). Each of these creatures provides a unique challenge to the hunter trying to tame them. Taming one of these unique creatures will be a mark of prestige to the hunter toting them around, not only for their rarity. Some of the lava spiders have some pretty tricky mechanics; Deth'tilac, especially, feels like a marathon.
Here's a compilation of all of the new eight hunter rare taming challenges coming in patch 4.2.

Check out our coverage of Ahnka from yesterday.
Abilities Deals damage based on the amount of armor the player is wearing.
How to tame Take off your armor to survive Ahnka's onslaught and tame.

Check out the Petopia thread on Ban'thalos.
Abilities
- Harsh Moonlight Call upon the harsh light of Elune to burn foes. Deals Arcane damage over 4 seconds.
How to tame Ban'thalos flies very high in the air, so careful pulling to survive the fall is necessary. If you survive the fall and Ban'thalos is still aggroed to you, you'll need to put down a well-timed Frost Trap and pop Deterrence to mitigate the Harsh Moonlight damage, which will wreck your day. Survive all this and begin taming when Ban'thalos is trapped. Congrats on your ghostly owl.

Works similar to Ahnka -- same mechanics, but a blue glow instead of a white/clear glow.

Check out the thread on Solix over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities:
- Flashfire Attack speed increased by 1,000%, movement speed increased by 100%.
- Blazing Speed Too fast to tame.

Check out the thread on Skitterflame over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities
- Superheated Too hot to safely tame.
- Burning Frenzy Damage increased based on current energy. If energy reaches zero, creature dies.

Abilities
- Toxic Presence Deals nature damage to all nearby enemies. Deals additions damage to pets and minions.

Check out the thread on Anthriss over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities Anthriss shoots a web at you that will kill you unless you submerge yourself in lava.
How to tame Staying submerged and taming will negate the effects of the web and allow you to tame this pet.

Check out Parkour's epic thread over on Petopia on his Deth'tilac tame.
Abilities
- Deth Strike Deth'tilac strikes an enemy, instantly killing them. This attack cannot be dodged, blocked, or parried. Costs Deth'tilac 10% of maximum health.
- Aura of Deth'spair Aura that reduces healing by 99%.
- Deth Metal Gains speed when he isn't being damaged.
The alternative is to try to get him to use Deth Strike enough that it wrecks his health until he is tamable.
Congratulations to Butters for the awesome kite and tame on Deth'tilac.

Well said sir! All these people complaining about simple re-skins are missing the point. The very fact that Blizzard is introducing rare beasts that have special requirements for taming is a reward in its self. I mean, what other class is getting a sweet mini-game like this? In a way, it is sort of a stealth re-introduction of a class quest for hunters.
Far more important than the superficial shell of the pet is the feat that it represents. The gold medal awarded to an Olympic athlete is not really that important. It is the fact that the individual was the best at what ever he or she did and the world acknowledges it. Some times, the journey is far more important than the destination.

Your springpaw lynx is 'unique' since hardly anyone uses them. Heck, I considered running through Silvermoon to get one since lynxes (the red ones, the oranger ones can be found in Netherstorm) are rare on Alliance side.
But then I went off and found Pogeyan, who has so much more personality than Sambas (though he has nice hair). It's nice never having to run into another one and dispelling the illusion that after I tamed, it respawned a clone out there somewhere for someone else :/

I will gladly throw myself in front of Deth'tilac for any hunter on my server who wants some sacrifice material. :P

Lol, if he enjoys it TOO much we'll have some insight into how freaky our friend Cutaia REALLY is. ;)
Thankfully, I do think I've got several guildies that will do this for me as well. ;-p You're in good company. XD

For the 38mil health spider, why couldn't you sic your pet on him, let it die, ice block him, res your pet, wait til ice block wears off, sic your pet, repeat repeat repeat, ice block, dismiss pet, then tame?
Seems a lot faster than the 40 minute kite fest this guy did.
Natsumi Jun 2nd 2011 5:50PM
Because he's Immune to Ice Trap?
droknar Jun 2nd 2011 6:00PM
How do you know this? From the PTR? It doesn't say up above, and I saw no mention of Ice Trap immunity in the post of the guy that tamed it.
llcjay2003 Jun 2nd 2011 6:06PM
It does not say he is immune to block him. He very well may be but I do not see that stated anywhere. I imagine he is though because I am sure the hunter referenced would have tried that. I would rather take necessary number of guildies to sacrifice themselves via Have Group Will Travel.
Natsumi Jun 2nd 2011 6:07PM
Most of the others are immune to ice trap and this guy specifically says "Gains speed when he isn't being damaged" so ice trapping him for 90+ seconds is likely a death sentence as he'll be too fast to keep away from.
Therinor Jun 3rd 2011 10:59AM
I think thats what the hunter actually did, minus the traps, in his second strategy... he kept his distance in order for him to have enough time to res the pet, too. Nice thread and explanations by the guy who did it, many kudos to him
The Dewd Jun 3rd 2011 1:11PM
In that case you could pair up with a hunter buddy to have two sacrificial pets to throw at it. Sure, you'd have to do it twice - unless you bring a Warlock instead. I mean, sure, they gotta be good for SOMETHING, right?
llcjay2003 Jun 2nd 2011 5:53PM
Hmm...Olm the Wise and the Emerald Spirit in Stonetalon appear to be too close to Ban'thalos for me to care. Gondria looks nearly identical to the 2 cats, so no thanks. The spiders look awesome and I wants one..except for Deth'tilac. F that. The other spiders look fun to tame.
Hold on...something is coming to me.....I sense something......I foresee......much griefing :P
Dreyja Jun 2nd 2011 6:23PM
I have both of them on my main and they do look quite different but then, I'm a nut for the details. :)
llcjay2003 Jun 2nd 2011 6:04PM

Dammit, this was supposed to be in reply to droknar

Hunters:
When taming spiders it is important to note they love being called the following:
Attercop
Lazy Lob
Crazy Cob
And especially Old Tomnoddy
B. Baggins
ziis Jun 2nd 2011 6:21PM
i saw a fire dog like the ones the flamewalker boss uses is it just a rare has any one else seen it
Revynn Jun 2nd 2011 6:39PM
Unfortunately, the Fire Dogs are Elementals. No tame for you.
AudreyR Jun 3rd 2011 9:01AM
Now I wish my shaman could tame elementals.
