Patch 4.2 New Hunter Pets: All 8 rares found

The eight new pets include two spirit cats (Ahnka and Magria), a spirit owl (Ban'thalos), and five uniquely colored lava spiders from the Firelands (Solix, Skitterflame, Kirix, Anthriss, and Deth'tilac). Each of these creatures provides a unique challenge to the hunter trying to tame them. Taming one of these unique creatures will be a mark of prestige to the hunter toting them around, not only for their rarity. Some of the lava spiders have some pretty tricky mechanics; Deth'tilac, especially, feels like a marathon.
Here's a compilation of all of the new eight hunter rare taming challenges coming in patch 4.2.

Check out our coverage of Ahnka from yesterday.
Abilities Deals damage based on the amount of armor the player is wearing.
How to tame Take off your armor to survive Ahnka's onslaught and tame.

Check out the Petopia thread on Ban'thalos.
Abilities
- Harsh Moonlight Call upon the harsh light of Elune to burn foes. Deals Arcane damage over 4 seconds.
How to tame Ban'thalos flies very high in the air, so careful pulling to survive the fall is necessary. If you survive the fall and Ban'thalos is still aggroed to you, you'll need to put down a well-timed Frost Trap and pop Deterrence to mitigate the Harsh Moonlight damage, which will wreck your day. Survive all this and begin taming when Ban'thalos is trapped. Congrats on your ghostly owl.

Works similar to Ahnka -- same mechanics, but a blue glow instead of a white/clear glow.

Check out the thread on Solix over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities:
- Flashfire Attack speed increased by 1,000%, movement speed increased by 100%.
- Blazing Speed Too fast to tame.

Check out the thread on Skitterflame over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities
- Superheated Too hot to safely tame.
- Burning Frenzy Damage increased based on current energy. If energy reaches zero, creature dies.

Abilities
- Toxic Presence Deals nature damage to all nearby enemies. Deals additions damage to pets and minions.

Check out the thread on Anthriss over at the Petopia forums.
Abilities Anthriss shoots a web at you that will kill you unless you submerge yourself in lava.
How to tame Staying submerged and taming will negate the effects of the web and allow you to tame this pet.

Check out Parkour's epic thread over on Petopia on his Deth'tilac tame.
Abilities
- Deth Strike Deth'tilac strikes an enemy, instantly killing them. This attack cannot be dodged, blocked, or parried. Costs Deth'tilac 10% of maximum health.
- Aura of Deth'spair Aura that reduces healing by 99%.
- Deth Metal Gains speed when he isn't being damaged.
The alternative is to try to get him to use Deth Strike enough that it wrecks his health until he is tamable.
Congratulations to Butters for the awesome kite and tame on Deth'tilac.

So.
Yesterday's cat was a spirit beast, and the picture above shows the bird will be one too. I'd wager the 2nd cat will be another spirit beast.
Has anyone managed to capture one of the 5 spiders yet to determine what pet family they're a part of? Or what pet skill(s) they have?
Right now, my hunter has all 25 pet slots filled. And from what we've seen so far, I think my current roster of pets is safe.

While taming these pets sounds fun, nothing beats setting off with bow in hand, into Alliance territory as a lowbie Hordling to tame a bird deep in the heart of Texas erm Darnassus. THAT was a status symbol. Still is my favorite pet. Named em Stolen. LOL :]. Couldn't resist.

Very Flintlock Vs. The Horde. XD

Woah these are awesome. Reminds me of the rhok'delar quests.

I kinda looked forward to an epic devilhound, those runed ones in the Plaguelands? They're awesome as it is, so an epic version would be awesome.
Oh well, i think its the taming challange that will be the most fun for me.

I have the biggest blue balls ever Blizz. Thanks for that.

I don't think I seen it mentioned... does anyone know how the spawn rate is gonna work on these?
MusedMoose Jun 2nd 2011 7:29PM
"Luck" would be my guess. ^_^

I really like this new game of trying to tame things. I hope it does not turn into a camp fest of waiting hours and hours for a spawn. I never got the spirit beasts for that reason. It's not all that elite or cool to say "hey i stood somewhere for hours, waiting for some pixels to show up".

Anhka is Green, not white. :)

5 of the 8 are pvp spiders? Really? 2 of the remaining 3 "new" pets are exactly the same outside of a "hue" shift? Not to mention Gondria was the weakest looking of the spirit beasts ... the polygon count is way too low to pull off the transparent effect.
Wow. Can't wait. For a minute there I was excited.
Loque and Chromaggus win!

I'd wager that one of the cats will be getting a new model or skin at the least.
shaann Jun 2nd 2011 8:35PM
figures just let my account expired after taming the last of the known spirit beasts, how am I suppose to enjoy the summer now?
Amaxe Jun 2nd 2011 9:11PM
Seem like an awful lot of spiders.
I don't see myself getting these pets. I doubt i could do it on my latency.
...well, that and my huntrer is level 30
Zhiva Jun 2nd 2011 10:25PM
"Dear guild, I need to sacrifice eight people to that spider so it agrees to be my pet. Any volunteers?"
Morgatho Jun 2nd 2011 10:32PM
They all look cool but I don't think Ill be getting any of them, seeing as how I no longer have a BM spec and am not a fan of spiders. But as to all these comments about ganking, a real hunter wouldn't and shouldn't attack a fellow hunter, hasn't Frost or BRK taught you people anything?
Dreyja Jun 3rd 2011 12:08AM
I agree. A pet-tame outranks faction. I'm still working on my guildies on that one.
NEVER kill a wanted rare-spawn, even if you have it already.
ETC. Hunter-PRIDE!

Blizzard, please, stop with the Pokemon junk and please address some serious issues that are affecting hunters. After 6 and a half years you finally get around to making traps not resistable but there are still so many broken mechanics, useless talents and general lack of synergy that hunters have in any kind of PvP outside of random BGs.
If you can rework Colossus Smash to have different effects in PvE and PvP for Warriors, you can apply the same principle to Hunters (and other classes) to prevent the constant headaches you cause for one community or another. Please, we don't need more useless pets that are just rehashed spiders, ghost cats and and an owl.
sherekhan88 Jun 3rd 2011 3:42AM
I was hoping the spiders would at least be different models. Guess I'll stick with the bone spiders, they seem to be the most recent/high-res of the spider models.
Draelan Jun 3rd 2011 4:24AM
The idea of taming challenges sounds exciting! ... The current models for the rare mobs are less-so.
While I can appreciate the various challenges themselves, you must ask yourself, well, what do you do afterwards? I mean, I'd like to try out the different taming methods, but do I REALLY need 5 different spiders in my stable? And what would it say about me if I wanted to tame them just to experience the unique challenge, but not keep the pet afterwards? Is it really FAIR then for me to try taming one of these guys if I intend to get rid of it afterwards, when there might be someone who wants to tame and keep it?
In my opinion, given the number of challenge pets here, they should A) Be visually unique enough so that they can be recognized as the unique taming challenge pets, and B) come from various pet families to add some variety.
If these don't turn out to be placeholders, I may tame one of the new cats (I don't have Gondria, though I've already got a number of spirit beasts, so I'm a bit unsure if I want any more...) and one of the new spiders (I don't have any spiders, as I never have any use for them), but I don't see any reason to fill my stables with loads of similar pets I'll likely never use JUST because they are tamed differently... Sad as I am to admit it, I'd rather save those slots for more useful or visually unique pets.
