Does Cataclysm have too much potential content?

We know that Ahn'Qiraj was a lost titan city and that the Tol'vir were assigned to it, that entities like Ossirian were once watchers like Setesh. (Setesh's model is nearly identical to the Anubisath that patrol AQ today.) It just feels like, with C'thun obviously driving Cho'gall around even after his "death," that there's room for a whole raid just dealing with the lost connections between AQ and Uldum. The lost passages of the titan research facility that the Qiraji took over? (We know from Uldaman and Ulduar that titan constructions tend to go on for miles and miles.)
And that's hardly even the top of the list of raid instances we could see. A lot of us hoped for and expected an Abyssal Maw raid of some kind. There's a lot of talk about another Caverns of Time instance or raid with Nozdorumu's return. And I can't be the only one who keeps thinking that Grim Batol has entire layers we haven't seen yet. Heck, there are whole terraces in Deepholm we visit once and never go back to, and that whole zone is massive and cries out for more.

In addition, it feels like the world around those zones has lots of stuff going on that could become instances and raids. With the upheaval in Stonetalon and the discovery of new night elf ruins just over the mountain from Nijel's Point, you could easily imagine the ghosts of the Highborne and the remains of the magical experiments needing to be dealt with. With Desolace undergoing a kind of renewal, what does that mean for the deeper titan vaults underneath what is today Maraudon? Have they been awakened as well? Since Cho'gall held a conference at Dire Maul, does that mean the Maul itself could become an active home for ogres and gronn? Cho'gall's attempt to subjugate his people's hostile overlords could end up with angry gronn lords (long time enemies of the Black Dragonflight) seizing control.
It feels like there's almost too much here to do in one expansion. Does an Azshara raid fit in Cataclysm, or should she be saved for her own? Do we want to hold off on an invasion of Gronn from Outland for a possible future where we turn our gaze back to the greater Warcraft cosmos?
Cataclysm sets the stage for the new status quo, after all. Every time I find myself nerding out over a War of the Ancients raid or a Kezan raid to deal with whatever servants of the Old Gods are under that place, I have to remind myself that it's okay to focus on the content we have. However, Cataclysm seems absolutely packed with stuff that could be brought in. I would love to see more of Kul Tiras, and frankly, the fact that we haven't had a daily quest hub put into the Ruins of Gilneas where Horde and Alliance can do quests and engage in world PVP just amazes me. I mean, we even know who we'd be fighting for and why.
Make it happen, guys.

Maybe they're planning on expanding on a zone by zone basis. It would certainly give the expansion continuity, and avoid releasing another expansion so close to the release of the Cataclysm.

If I remember right though, one thought brought up recently by Activison-Blizzard was to release expansions for WoW much quicker than they have in the past. For all we know we might end up having to pay every 8 months-1yr for the next "expansion".
Considering that's their response to a slight decline in the subscription numbers... I doubt it'll be too effective in fixing it...
DonNochay Jun 4th 2011 6:32PM
Yeah, this.
The longer we can go with them updating the game and keeping it fresh via patches and what have you without having to buy yet another copy of the new expansion and having to level our toons/professions, the better. It's gotten pretty clear that Blizzard can easily get money/expansion hungry and release them in rapid fire succession, and, to be honest, it would be a detriment to the game and the community.

@devilsei
I totally posted my initial comment after yours had been posted, and seriously, I feel you. It gets extraordinarily tedious for those who are more casual than hardcore to not only level our toons, but also gear them up, only to know that everything is fruitless in 6 months. They can consider their sub numbers -1 as far as I'm concerned if at Blizzcon we find out we're getting a new expansion next spring, or something insane like that. Even next fall would potentially piss me off, but I suppose I am easily pissed off.....

@devilsei: Since they were supposed to be putting out patches at a faster pace, and we see how that has turned out, I doubt they would start releasing expansions faster. Maybe I misunderstood, but the language they used in describing faster and more frequent patches meant we would be talking about 4.3 and possibly 4.4 by now.
I know a lot of people complain about Activision's meddling in Blizzard's affairs, but I doubt they would screw with a cash cow like WoW in a way that would be potentially devastating to the game (and their profits).

@llcjay2003
i think you VASTLY underestimate Activision, and their ability to meddle and destroy.

I agree with you. Blizzard is always announcing that it "intends" to publish expansions faster, but it almost always turns out to take them two years. I would suggest ignoring similar proclamations in the future as well.
Noyou Jun 4th 2011 8:21PM
Yep they sure did say they wanted to put out smaller patches more frequently. I think it's been the exact opposite though. Not exactly sure when Ulduar rolled out but it was in april or may. I'm still leveling toons and having fun doing all kinds of things. I gave up on the rat race that is the gearing up of toons. I picked one dedicated pvp toon. Still haven't picked one for PvE but I am in no hurry to bust thru content. I am looking forward to the quests in Hyjal. I still want to do some old raids and work on some achievements. I'm always glad to see more things added to the game whether it's content or quality of life changes. Still waiting on those racials to be updated...
Elovan Jun 4th 2011 8:24PM
Their goal they stated were more frequent, -smaller- patches. The content itself wouldn't come out any faster than it would before, but they would release pieces of it at a time rather than wait till the entire thing was done. That was what happened with 4.1 and 4.2, in Wrath it would all be 4.1 and would come out at about the same time that 4.2 is going to come out. Major content (raids) will still come out at the same pace, but we don't have to wait as long for the extra stuff that comes with it like ZG/ZA.

Path of the Titans lefts overs if you ask me.

"then we infiltrate the Halls of Reflection"
Halls of Origination. I don't think Algalon stored anything in the Lich King's Halls of Lag*. :)
*My computer sucked during Wrath.
Tharama Jun 4th 2011 6:16PM
I'm okay with the "too much content" of Cataclysm but if I see one more boss i've killed several times already appear in the next dungeon/raid, i'm going to kick a gnome. Hard.
devilsei Jun 4th 2011 6:21PM
Kick a Worgen baby, its much more effective and noticable, I mean, who DOESN'T kick a gnome, Horde or Alliance?
Gwen Jun 4th 2011 8:59PM
I'm a gnome and I approve of this message.
squig_masta Jun 5th 2011 12:31AM
I have a level 10 worgen alt and I approve of this message.
Mortiseraphim Jun 7th 2011 1:48PM
The Halls of Origination was merely a setback!
Rob Jun 4th 2011 6:17PM
Yeah its big, certainly as big as wraith or possbilly bigger. But is it more than in BC or vanilla with its untapped portals or oddly dropped quest lines? There is alot of potetial in any expac i think
Omacron Jun 4th 2011 6:20PM
Cata, with its global scale and revisiting of the "old world", is far more like Vanilla than the subsequent expansions, with a weaker theme and yet broader scope. Even content that's been done before, like, say, ZG, can still be included in Cata.
For the record, I'm betting that 4.3 will include Ahn'qiraj, and it would make sense to include some Uldum lore there as well.
Lemons Jun 4th 2011 7:05PM
I hope. I love AQ! Even though I wasn't actually playing the game when it was released. I want them to go back and spruce up the place. Better textures on everything, bring back old bosses and maybe a few new ones. AQ just had an incredible aesthetic and feel they need to bring it back for those of us who didn't get to enjoy it in vanilla.
