Not finished yet, but I think you mistakenly believe that it was the constant use of portals what strains planets to the point of destruction -- the Sundering was caused due to the explosion of the Well of Eternity and the portal that was created using its power. Malfurion and co. destroyed the Well in order to close the portal, and the liberation of energy destroyed the old Kalimdor. In Draenor, the opening of multiple portals unleashed chaotic forces from the Nether (since at least one of those portals connected directly to it). It's my personal assumption that each gateway also creates some sort of "gravitational pull" to the other side, which is equilibrated when it's just one portal, but since Ner'zhul created so many, the different pulls ripped the planet apart (again, personal theory, but the first part with the chaotic energy is canon). In Sunwell Plateau, if Kil'jaeden had managed to cross over to Azeroth, we would've had him roaming the world like we had Archimonde, but the Sunwell certainly wouldn't have exploded, unless we had attacked it instead of the demon.I'll continue reading now =)
