Yeah, when they limited things to 10 man, and then later to 5 man, they did adjust some boss health and mechanics, and also upgraded the loot pretty significantly (you'll see that in patch 1.4).
Don't forget, prior to patch 1.4 a lot of dungeon drops were greens. Dire maul was notable in that it was the first pure 5-man level 60 instance, that it had LOTS of blue drops (with green stats!), and that it had lots of reasons to go there. However, at least on my server, it wasn't as in-demand as the Strath, Scholo, and Blackrock instances. I don't doubt that end-game guilds spent a lot of time in there, but the standard LFG chatter in the cities was for the classics.
