Spiritual Guidance: 8 reasons why your shadow priest DPS sucks

It's pretty much a known fact that we shadow priests are looked up to the world over. (Especially by Tyler Caraway, but that's mostly just because he's very short.) The reasons behind the admiration are many, but one seems to be more compelling than the rest: Shadow priests are capable of doing stunningly awesome DPS. Big numbers are sexy. There's no denying it.
The unfortunate reality, however, is that not every shadow priest gets to realize their true potential. Tiny problems and mistakes hold them back. And though some of these problems are easily fixed, the fact that they're damn near impossible to guess at and diagnose on your own leaves a lot of shadow priests frustrated.
Without a doubt, there are an awful lot of potential pitfalls out there. If you follow me after the break, we'll talk about eight of the most common ones. More importantly, though, we'll suggest ways to overcome them and get your priest back on the path to greatness.
8. You're not using the right gems and enchants (or any at all).
We've all seen that guy muddling through heroics without gems or enchants. Usually, it's a conscious decision -- after all, "I'm only going to have this gear until I get an epic," "It's not worth the effort," or "Enchants and gems area too expensive."
There's just no excuse for that kind of thinking anymore. Enchants and gems are plentiful and cheap on the auction house, and they're only getting cheaper. Most importantly, though, those tiny little gems and enchants make up a huge portion of our DPS. On my raiding shadow priest, I get well over 750 intellect from gems and enchants alone -- nearly 20% of my total. And that doesn't even begin to consider the hundreds of points of secondary stats, Power Torrent, or profession bonuses (such as Lightweave).
If you're not sure what gems and enchants to get, don't worry -- it's not hard to figure out.
Gemming in the current patch 4.1 build is the same as gemming in 4.0.6 -- the Brilliant Inferno Ruby is almost always king. Enchanting is easy too, and with patch 4.1 increasing access to Maelstrom Crystals (and even more to be available once 4.2 hits), there's no reason to put anything but the best enchants on your epic gear.
7. You're not hit-capped.
Back when Cataclysm first launched, there was a darn good argument to be made for not capping your hit. Since patch 4.0.6, though, there's no excuse -- cap your hit. Aside from the fact that it's our most valuable secondary stat, when your spells miss, you waste valuable time and mana and risk losing important buffs.
For raiding shadow priests, the hit cap is 1,742 points (or +17%). For shadow priests who only run heroics, you can get away with a mere 615 (+6%). If you're a long way off from either target, reforge until you get there.
6. You're using the wrong trinkets.
Let's be honest: It's generally not hard to gear shadow priests. If something cloth drops, we can wear it (and to great effectiveness). If it's not perfectly itemized, we can reforge it. And since the value of our secondary stats (like crit, haste, and mastery) tend to be nearly equal in value, any random set of i346 heroic gear can be turned into something raid-ready.
There's one slot where choosing the right piece of gear truly matters, and that's your two trinket slots. The relative value of two similar item level trinkets varies wildly depending on the base stat on the gear and the trinket's proc.
Not sure what trinket is the best for you? Don't worry, there are resources. A few months ago, I wrote a column on the best pre-raid trinkets. And, of course, you can always check out Shadowpriest.com's list of the best trinkets currently available.
5. You're Mind Spiking.
A month or so ago, I was running a 5-man heroic on one of my alts. I wound up being grouped with another shadow priest. And while I'm about the last person to judge someone based on what Recount is telling me, I couldn't help but notice she was putting out a mere 4,000 DPS. Something was very wrong here.
During the next boss fight (it was Halls of Origination, so there were a lot of boss fights), I made an effort to watch what the shadow priest was doing wrong. Things started okay -- she Mind Spiked to open, and followed it up with her guaranteed Mind Blast crit. But then, after applying a few DOTs, she wound up Mind Spiking again. And again. And again. She was using it as part of her regular rotation to buff her Mind Blast casts.
This is a pretty extreme example, to be sure, but the point remains. Mind Spike erases all the DOTs active on your target. Once DOTs are rolling, the time to Mind Spike that target has ended. Save the spell for when you're soloing and to quickly nuke medium-health adds.
4. You're not Mind Spiking.
DOTs are a huge part of a shadow priest's damage -- nearly 50% in raid situations. It's absolutely crucial you keep them up at all times when facing down a raid boss. But what about when you're not in a raid? Sometimes, DOTs are not the best answer.
Consider this: Your strongest DOT is Vampiric Touch. By spending 1.5 seconds of cast time, you can apply a DOT that will tick for 24,000 damage over 15 seconds. That same 1.5 seconds could get you an instant 10k shot of damage from Mind Spike. Now ultimately, you can stack another two 10k damage Mind Spikes, guaranteeing that your a follow up cast of Mind Blast hits for 25k or more.
Ultimately, that kind of huge, fast damage is unsustainable -- it just costs way too much mana. But when you need to burn down an add fast, that expensive burst is absolutely perfect.
3. You're suffering from high lag or latency.
It's unfair. It's usually not your fault. It can cost you several thousand DPS on a given encounter. And if it gets bad enough, it'll even kill you.
It's lag, the delay between you entering commands on your keyboard and those commands reaching the server and actually happening. Sometimes it's caused by your cable company, sometimes its just an issue with the server, and sometimes it's because you are unfortunate enough to be trying to play in Australia. Thankfully, though, lag is a manageable condition:
- Switch servers. It's not an option for some of you because of the emotional ties you have to your guild and your friends, but by moving your main to a server closer to you, you should be able to reduce your latency. Be sure to start a level 1 character on the server and test out your connection a couple times before you do -- no point spending $25 on a character transfer to a server that's worse than the one you're currently on, right?
- Install an addon. I absolutely love the addon Quartz because of its ability to estimate how much time of each cast is lost to lag. With that kind of visual cue, you know the lag-adjusted time to start your next cast, minimizing the effects of lag to the best of your ability.
- Try a ping-reduction service. A number of different services are available that let you connect to World of Warcraft via a SSH Tunnel. Without getting technical, these services streamline the sending of your data, allowing you to send and receive WoW data quicker. These services charge a monthly fee (Smoothping, for example, costs about $6/month), though many will let you try it out on a limited basis free of charge.
A few weeks ago, we talked about the mechanics of shadow priest haste. Ultimately, the first draft was ... a little ... uh ... incorrect. (This was literally Tyler Caraway's fault. Literally. And I have the text messages to prove it.)
Here's the absolute, must-read takeaway about your DOTs: Refresh them after the second-to-last tick, but before the final tick. You'll buy yourself a new, full-length DOT without clipping the old one. Refreshing after the final tick can literally cost you over 1,000 DPS on a fight.
1. You're not using your cooldowns.
Shadow priests have several important abilities with lengthy cooldowns. The most important from a DPS perspective are your Shadowfiend, which provides several thousand DPS while active, and Dark Archangel, which buffs Mind Blast and Mind Flay (among others) by as much as 20%. These abilities provide huge DPS boosts, but some shadow priests only use them when they need mana; others don't use them at all.
Huge mistake. Being late with your Shadowfiend is a very small DPS decrease, but as with dropped DOTs, when you make it a habit of missing these cooldowns, the DPS loss adds up. Do you have an on-use trinket, or an on-use ability like Lifeblood? Don't forget to use that cooldown as well.

On a serious note...
I'm leveling a priest. Currently 75. 100% Dungeons / BGs.
Can you write a semi-PvP flaored article? How to hunt... Moonkin and Warlocks for example? I'm sure you have experience killing you-know-who.
Matthew Jun 10th 2011 7:58PM
I can give you some tidbits, since I made my shadow priest in two flavors. PvE and PvP.
PvP:
You must have Silence. Silence boomkins. silence warlocks. Silence healers. (I like to call my spriest the anti healer).
When talented, Vampiric Touch when dispelled causes a fear effect. Nice huh? Who else but a healer dispells!
The Talent Paralyze is your friend. It's great for those mean nasty warriors. Mind spike x 2 (or 3 for guaranteed crit) then mind blast = not moving for 4 seconds.
Improved fade: sounds awesome, but those two talents made me go OOM. I took the masochsim talent instead.
The shadow version of chain fearing:
Psychic Scream. Psychic Horror. Silence / Arcane Torrent. Dispersion. (Move around during dispersion) Wait a bit then Psychic scream (with pvp gloves and talents) is likely
ready to use soon
How do I defend a node in arathi or gilneas? HOLY NOVA! I know, it takes you out of shadow BUT it's a great aoe. Mind sear might miss one target, but you can do it ranged.
Don't forget, you can still bubble, and heal. You are a priest.
I know this post had crappy organization . . . sorry. Hope the ideas made it worth while.
would love to see some more pvp priest articles.

Missing a Mind Blast still gives you Empowered Shadow - may want to make an adjustment to the article if you can. It's still a dps increase to remain under cap if you can quickly recover from a miss (recast the missed spell).
Socialcockroach Jun 8th 2011 7:10PM
It is not a dps increase to re-cast your spell because it cuts out a mind flay or may potentially mess up your DoT rotation. Also, Mindblast has a cool down so if you miss, that is another six seconds before you can cast it again. No. You really should not be under hit cap.
Socialcockroach Jun 8th 2011 7:16PM
On second thought, to be fair, MB should never be cast with out full orbs and not on c/d like it used to be.
Almoderate Jun 8th 2011 7:38PM
Actually, the jury is kind of out on that one.
I say that because Fox might have brought the subject up due to a tweet I sent him this past weekend. On our guild's Sinestra trials (We finally got here last week. Yay!), I was doing some horrible dps compared to both the other shadow priest in the raid with similar gear and to my previous dps since I'd equipped a new piece. I'd also noticed that while I'd casted MB with orbs up, I wasn't getting the buff. I went entire egg burn phases with no Empowered Shadow buff, and that little bit of missing dps had cost us the attempt. I checked the logs and sure enough I'd missed with a MB here and there.
I capped my hit and all was right with the world for me again.
I've gotten mixed answers from various sources (shadowpriest.com, guildies, etc.) when I asked: "Does Empowered Shadow refresh on HIT or on CAST?" Typically speaking with most spells, you gain the benefit of a spell when it hits and not when it is merely cast. Then again, the benefits of our buff are supposed to be realized when an orb is consumed (on cast). All I can tell you is that capping hit worked for me, and I've not seen a very costly dip in Empowered Shadow since.
It would be nice if I could get a straight answer from a GM on this one.

While I appreciate the simplicity of saying always hit cap, the reality is a little more complex. If you are close to the hit cap say with around 1% to go, yes 1 in 100 spells will miss, but 99 of them have the benefit of the Intellect you put in, instead of the +hit trying to make your hit cap. When you get close to the cap, the extra spell power on the spells that do hit will usually be more DPS than reaching the hit cap, but having lower DPS on the spells.
Of course this only applies close to the hit cap.
almoderate Jun 8th 2011 10:04PM
That's not quite how hit works, where you miss 1 out of every 100 spells. In fact, you may not miss any or very few. Or you may miss a lot. You have a 99% chance to hit with every single spell if you have 16% hit. If you miss with the previous spell, you still have a 1% chance to miss with the next.
I was getting some rather unlucky breaks at 16.5%.

@ Socialcockroach
What Schucker88 is saying is that when you cast MB with at least 1 orb (if it hits or misses) you get the empowered shadows buff. If you knew how spriest mastery works, you would know that it is not in your best interest to wait for 3 orbs, as it makes no difference on the buff. If you dont have empowered shadows up then once you get at least 1 orb you would want to cast MB, then recast your dots (except SW:P as MF refreshes it) Do this, then you get a huge dmg increase on VT and DP. for me, its a 29% dmg increase.

Henri Poincaré Jun 8th 2011 8:20PM
I'm not keeping up with the latest EJ style math, but I thought the consensus was, it's ok to cast MB with at least 1 orb (otherwise no dot buff), since waiting for 3 orbs, especially on starter gear with low crit, is a dps loss; am I wrong? (I seldom raid, mostly just hcs these days, alas, but I'd still like to know.)
Rifty Jun 8th 2011 8:26PM
No, in a fight that'll last long enough for two sets of DoT's or more, just burning that first orb to get ES up as quickly as you can makes perfect sense. Waiting till the full three orbs is fine when ES is up, but priority wise it's better to keep it up rather than waiting for a more powerful Blast
TonyMcS Jun 8th 2011 9:24PM
I'll take issue with "trying" to play from Australia. Yes it will be around 300ms, but I still raid effectively - the last thing I'd blame my occasional poor play on is lag ;-)
Katherine Jun 9th 2011 6:34PM
Ditto New Zealand. 300-400 ping might make or break you on world firsts or in PvP, but it hasn't caused any issues for me raiding. Some of the americans/canadians have more internet issues.

Im kinda new at "shadowpriesting" (been for a long time holy), and im loving the spec, but there's some aspects of it im really having trouble with, namely, how buffs affect dot damage. First of all, sorry for my poor english :P
1- Is the dot damage based on your current buffs or the buffs you had when you cast the spell? If the second option, does mind flaying keep the original buff or overwrites it?
2- Maybe a little based on the previous question, but, is it worth to recast dots during a particulary good buff (for example, blooodlust, the pools at council, etc)?
3- When is the right time to use the first Dark Archangel? And, immediately after using it, mind flay to "recharge" Evangelism or Mind blast first (given that I probably have at least two available orbs by that time)?
Z Jun 8th 2011 10:57PM
1- based on when they were cast. MF re-applies SW:P, so Pain is dynamically updated with your buffs and you really should only think about refreshing VT/DP in relation to buffs.
2- Always recast DP when you get a buff, since the initial front-loaded damage is already worth it (spamming DP is higher dps than letting the DoTs tick, but you can't maintain it mana-wise). Recast VT only when you have 2 or more buffs at the same time (except BL). Otherwise the cast time is better spend on other spells.
3- When you have at least 18 seconds of your DoTs left, so you won't need to refresh them. When you have an orb and ES is about to fall off: MB. If no orb, then MF to get 5 stacks of Evangelism as soon as possible for increased SW:P ticks (in other words: ES > 5 stacks, but 5 stacks is next priority).

Z speaks the utter truth.
For a great quick summary on what you'll find on Ej and shadowpriest read his post and learn.
My 2 cents
Currently im 2% under hit cap but find my dps increased as compared to when im capped. Mainly i think its because i pay attention to my casts. I push a fair amount of dps and any 2 boss fight im consistently top.
Multi dotting wasnt addressed in the post, but if you can crack that you'll see a very nice increase in your DPS. (until 4.2 hits and then you dont have to bother)
Ive also found that a good easy tip for new Spriests is to use proc based trinkets (e.g. Valiona's mirror), these trinkets while giving you only a small SP or intellect boost for say 20 secs can be awesomely abused :) if you refresh say DP 1 second before it falls off the remainder on the DoT still benefits from the SP or int, allowing you to run a huge portion of a fight with buff abused DoTs.
Currently i have DMC volcano, Bell(cant remember name), lightweave and power torrent that can proc. meaning the majority of a fight i have up some nice buffs.
Jeff (Not that one ^ ) Jun 8th 2011 10:03PM
The only difference between a 3-orb MB and a 1-MB is the amount of MB damage, no? The Empowered Shadow buff is no stronger or weaker, and doesn't last longer or shorter, because of how many orbs you consume, correct?
Tyler Caraway Jun 8th 2011 10:23PM
For the record, I'm actually taller than Fox, so for him to call me short...
