The list of games that didn't make due to clever product announcements and patches from blizzard is long and goes all the way back to an early rumor of diablo II killed. Some pretty good games.
Also Blizzard has never been too good to not throw sand in the machinery of any potential competitor. In fact I can't think of any wow expansion that was not placed on top of another promising launch.
So I think it was a wise move to hold on to his cards.
The belief of fair competition is slightly naive imho.
