I actually think that what they are fearing currently is the shadow that has been looming over the wake of all of the FAILED MMORPGs that have been attempting to outlast WoW and failing horrible. Guild Wars 2 is on it's way. It's set to be released soon-ish, as is Old Republic. Neither will release a date as neither wishes to share a release date. Enough said.

Failed MMOs like, say... Guild Wars?

Actually, a LARGE number of the people who originally purchased Guild Wars, have returned to play it recently AND purchased the xpacs that they hadn't previously all to get the Hall of Monument items set up for the release of Guild Wars 2. An MMO set to not deal with tank/heals wait times.. set quests with blocks of crit text... or having to stand in one spot to throw a fire ball. ;)
There's no point in fearing WoW any longer, so there's no way that this would have been directed at WoW. Why do I say that? The 500 pound gorilla is already in the room and is full and sitting in the corner wanking off. It doesn't want to hurt others right now, as it's pretty content. When they have the NEED to release a new raid, then people who went to try the failsauce that is RIFT and got stuck with that, will come back to blow up the new content then take yet ANOTHER break from WoW...
I myself and kind of tired of the taking a break from WoW thing... I miss it from time to time but spending $15 to grind isn't what I'm looking for right now. ;)

@razion
Guild Wars has sold over 6.5 million units, hardly a failed MMO.

Thanks Myf, and yes that number itself is rising. Hell, they've sold quite a bit of GW2 copies already... the game is at LEAST 6 months away from actual release. haha The price listed on Amazon isn't even a real price... it's simply a place holder, not a pre order. I'm pretty sure GW2 is doing quite well. Perhaps anyone attempting to be a nay sayer here should visit Google videos and search for: Guild Wars 2 Gameplay. You'll hush yourself shortly after.

razion: You can't really say that Guild Wars is a failed MMO, because they're not set up as a traditional MMO. There's no subscription fee. You buy the boxed product (original game, or expansion) and that's it.
And for that, Arenanet has done a bang up job. They've kept on top of updates better than some pay-to-play products, MMOs or otherwise.
