Scattered Shots: Improving the hunter BM talent tree

Every Thursday, WoW Insider brings you Scattered Shots for beast mastery, marksmanship and survival hunters. Frostheim of Warcraft Hunters Union uses logic and science (mixed with a few mugs of dwarven stout) to look deep into the hunter class. Mail your hunter questions to Frostheim.
Ghostcrawler (lead systems designer) recently posted a fascinating Developer Watercooler with a review of the Cataclysm talent tree changes. In it, he suggested that for the most part, the talent tree changes were successful, while acknowledging there were still some disappointments. But at the end, he said this:
Ghostcrawler - Lead Systems Designer
In the meantime, this is a great topic for further discussion. Players like to evaluate the talents in their particular class, but it's also useful to evaluate the talent tree system as a whole. It's an iconic design for World of Warcraft for sure, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved.
Now, we all know that Ghostcrawler's statements are sometimes deliberately vague or obfuscated and require some interpretation. Let me clear up what he really means in plain English:
Well, hunters -- we don't want to let the big GC down. It's time to roll up our sleeves and start suggesting what we'd like to see done with the hunter talent trees. To help focus the discussion a bit, we're starting off this week with just the Beast Mastery tree. Join me after the cut to get started! All of us here at Blizzard would love to hear from the hunter community on exactly how we could tweak and further improve the hunter trees. Feedback from the greatest community in WoW in invaluable, especially compared to the whining of the hunter support classes, who can all just die in a fire as far as I'm concerned.
What we're talking about
I just want to point out at the outset that we are not looking at DPS balance issues here, which are a separate thing.
What we're interested in are the talent trees themselves, how they feel and function. I also think that specializations and masteries are fair game, and of course we want to pay attention to the interaction of the talent tree and the "feel" of the BM hunter and rotation.
The BM talent treeFor reference, here is the BM talent tree as it stands now (play with it in detail on Wowhead). I've tossed on here the talents that we typically take for a raiding build -- but in discussing potential talent changes, we have to take PVP into account just as much (and I am very much a random BG very casual PVPer).
BM specializations
BM gets the following special bonuses just for choosing the BM tree:
- Bonus ability Intimidation
- Specialization Animal Handler
- Mastery Master of Beasts
I'd far rather see something like Bestial Wrath become the bonus ability of the BM hunter, or even Beast Mastery -- something that really defines BM. Bestial Wrath alone shouldn't be too unbalancing, and it really gives a new hunter that "sweet!" moment. Master of Beasts, while arguably the most defining BM ability, could be a bit overpowered at lower levels (getting four pet talent points when every other hunter has none for another 10 levels). On the other hand, I suppose you could have it scale, though that would make the talent more complicated.
But I'd like to see something far more defining of BM to give them as their bonus ability and then turn Intimidation back into a talent.
Kill Command
I know there are a lot of BM hunters out there who strongly feel that Kill Command should be a BM-only ability -- even the bonus ability for choosing the tree at level 10. Personally, I wouldn't disapprove of that, but I don't think it's necessary.
BM hunters (as well as all others) already get Kill Command at level 10. I do not think that an ability has to be exclusive to just one spec to be a signature ability. I mean, if you look at any raid parse and see a hunter with more than the occasional Kill Command used, you know that's a BM hunter. In other words, Kill Command is a signature shot of the BM hunter. Who cares if MM and SV can use the ability if they almost never do, and it's not nearly as powerful for them?
Again, I'm cool with it either way, but I have no problem with a shared ability that's just massively stronger for BM as a signature shot. See the comments, I've no doubt, for an opposing viewpoint.
Talent changes
Okay, let's come around again to the talent tree itself and take a look at what could be improved here. The first thing that disappoints me about the BM tree in general is that we do not have a lot of choice.
We have a total of two talent points that are spare in a PVE build, and they have to be spent in the BM tree and cannot be spent anywhere to increase our DPS (which is fine, as long as the non-DPS choices are engaging). Our options are Pathfinding, Spirit Bond, Improved Mend Pet, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Chimera. At least for raiding hunters, Spirit Bond is the no-brainer -- the only talent of the group that has a chance of improving our ability to take down bosses. I love the idea of hard choices in the talent trees, the Oh, but I want them all! impulse, but we just don't have that in the BM tree right now.
On to some specifics:
GftT and Sic 'Em One of the first things that jumps out at me when I look at the BM tree is the MM tree. Both Go for the Throat and Sic 'Em feel like they belong to us in the BM tree. Why the heck do MM hunters have those talents? Half the time, they don't even remember that they have a pet! This is an emotionally powerful territorial issue for BM hunters -- and I think it makes sense that high-tier talents that are clearly pet-oriented should be in the BM tree. That helps to define for new hunters what each tree is about.
One with Nature First of all, let's give One with Nature to the MM hunters as a partial exchange for Go for the Throat and Sic 'Em. Second (and I know this is a bit of a nitpick), but I believe you can't get Aspect of the Hawk (let alone Fox) until level 12, but you get your first talent point at level 10. I can see that being confusing for new hunters ("What the heck is this talking about? Will I get a new ability if I spend a talent here?"). It probably belongs in the second tier of talents. Or AotH should be available by level 10.
Pathfinding There's no question but that increased mount speed is very useful when you're leveling, but outside of that... I will bet you Pathfinding is the least-used talent in the BM tree, and for good reason. I want to like it, but when I compare spending my non-DPS talent points on this or Spirit Bond, there's just no decision. I think this talent should get beefed up a bit to at least make it a consideration. Options include making the mount speed boost a buff to our party/raid, or my personal favorite, also giving it the minor run speed increase. With a standard run speed increase in the talent, that makes choosing it vs. Spirit Bond suddenly a tough choice.
Improved Mend Pet Similar to Pathfinding, Improved Mend Pet is just not good enough except in special circumstances (mostly, extreme soloing). Also, this talent could read "Causes your gun to fire twice as fast," and I'll bet you a lot of hunters would still expect it to make their Mend Pet heal for more -- that's the first thing that new hunters (and many not-new hunters) think when they read the title. Personally, I think it might be neat if this talent made your Mend Pet tick for twice as long (although I still wouldn't take it in any raiding build). Perhaps this is one that should just be replaced with something more useful outside of corner cases.
Kindred Spirits Okay, all of us PVE types take Kindred Spirits, but only because we don't have any other choice. I'd love to see this replaced entirely, perhaps with Stampede.
What do you think?
So these are my thoughts on tweaking the BM talent tree. The main things I'd want to focus on would be replacing Intimidation with a more BMish bonus ability and setting up the talent tree so that we actually have interesting or tough choices to make, even if it's only for those two talents.
Without question, the BM spec has improved more than any other hunter spec in Cataclysm. It is finally starting to see some of its BC glory days returning, only with an actual involved and interesting rotation. Just a few talent tweaks and a wee Stampede ability, and we're pretty much there, I think.
But how about you guys? If Ghostcrawler were reading this article, what would you want to tell him about the BM talent tree?

I love BM have been since I started playing this game, and never have even look or tried the other probably never will.
Now for our signature move Intimidation is kind of weak, while I would say get rid of it I will say it doesn't scream BM to me. In exchange for it I would say KC is a good choice, a better choice is Heart of the Phoenix. What BM wouldnt love to insta rez their pet expecially in a post Cata world when lots of healers refuse to trow a heal your pets way.
Flying pets should be able to hit flying targets we loose to much dps by not been able to use our "signature technique" cause the boss is in the air.
Gives us some kind of AoE that's viable maybe put Volley back in in exchange for Crouching Tiger Hidden Chimera, ( I know if this ever happened we would never, ever, eeever... hear the end of it from SV and MM). but we need better AOE.
And one last note is where are my extra spaces for carring pets BM was supposed to be able to carry more pets with them as opposed to the other 2 specs and here I am all of us can carry 5 pets. I feel lied to.

Just to add my 2 cents. I've been BM since I started playing in BC. I stuck with it throughout Wrath, even though my dps was noticeably lower than my MM, and SV brethren. In general I'm happy with the state of BM damage now in Cata. My BM hunter can easily (though not always) do more damage than the mages and locks. Which is kinda shocking since my main is a lock.
As for the talent trees, I am 100% all for making KC the BM only signature shot rather than Intimidation at lvl 10. Don't get me wrong, even though I don't PVP as much on my huntard as I do my lock, I find Intimidation to be VERY useful in PVE. Especially when the healer or myself has grabbed agro. My pet's dash ability is likely off cd by then and my pet has no problem reaching the mob before it gets to the healer,or me and hitting Intimidation. I think it should be in the BM talent tree, just not as our "given" for choosing BM. And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the "Stampede" Idea. Seriously, Stampede please!!!!!!

I'd like Misdirect to show up much sooner while we are leveling ~ and maybe a more obvious 'pet is focus of MD, but it could be a tank'. I think newer hunters miss that and should learn that earlier.
anjeney Jun 9th 2011 8:53PM
I honestly think that Beast Mastery should mean " pet with more ap" and that all three specs should be able to use the spirit beasts and rares.
Yeah I know that most won't agree with me but.. a Hunter is Hunter. If it's tameable all should be able to use it.

Adding Exotic pets would be a very easy thing for blizzard to do. Beastial Wrath may be a bit over powered for low level pvp, but Blizzard doesn't balance for that anyways.

I've never enjoyed BM as much as the other two specs, but I would respec the SECOND they introduced Stampede.
The other epic idea I've heard Frost talk about is an ability to summon a swarm of critters. That could be the awesome answer. It's totally separate from the current pet, the Beast Master just summons like 20 squrrels, turkeys, etc, to swarm the target. It could even be an AoE attack. Long cooldown, damage over 10 seconds or so, improved by mastery. Minor glyphs to determine the type of critter. Epic.
ril-gania Jun 10th 2011 4:08AM
epic, yes, but i'd feel more like a crittermaster then... :P

Some changes I'd love to see for BM:
-Make people think twice about focus firing down a BM hunter's pet. Give them a significant buff upon pet death that lasts 5-15 seconds. (fair since BM hunters w/o heart of the phoenix at the ready are sitting ducks with a dead pet.
-During Bwrath / Beast Within make it so BM Hunters can fire at point blank or better still a 'melee version' of all their shots that do the same damage. (not boosted cause then BM raiders would insist on fighting short range)
-Bring back separation anxiety. I loved the speed / damage boost when your pet was out of line of sight.
ril-gania Jun 10th 2011 4:01AM
your two last ideas are cool, i didn't understand the first one however (i'm not native so...).
2: maybe just reduce the min range to 0y during BW, or give us back at least snare immunity during bw.
3: yeah i liked the concept of that talent too. but i wouldn't ask for a los/range dependent damage buff as this would cause us to do weird stuff in raids. the runspeed thing is cool, maybe add a proc of some sort that helps us indirectly, but not with damage.
kevin Jun 9th 2011 9:24PM
I'd like to see BM able to let pet tank Heroics. No I'm not kidding.
Leshrac Jun 9th 2011 9:26PM
Bottom line - if it's fun and a lot of players enjoy it; Blizzard will kill it. They're not happy unless they see a 30% utilization on all 3 trees. They force feed us what they want, not what we enjoy. Say, if, 100% of all Hunters were BM and freaking loved it, they would, and have, netf it to he'll. In their minds, no matter how it is accomplished, they want 30/30/30 % spread in all trees and classes.
I remember the SL/Drain Life build for Demonolgy PVP, I loved that build. Everyone used it for PVP. They killed it. Same with BM for a while, and Ret Paladins, etc. As sure as the sun rises; if you enjoy it and you feel effective, don't get used to it, they'll kill it. This is the one aspect about WoW that I loathe.....after 7 years they're still needing-buffing-merging-buffing every damn tree, and like circus monkeys we're left to constantly juggle and adapt so that the lords of class design over at Blizzard feel like they're putting their imprint on the game.
Leshrac Jun 9th 2011 9:28PM
Damn iPhone auto-correction, but u get my drift.
Killik Jun 10th 2011 6:23AM
You seem to most enjoy one-button specs and not see anything wrong with that being the most effective way to play.
adamjgp Jun 10th 2011 11:43AM
IMO the game must evolve or die. I would hate if classes hit a point where they were 'balanced' and no new mechanics or tweaks were introduced.
Also, I feel that striving for a 33.3/33.3/33.3 representation is a good goal. Albeit not an attainable one, because some people will play what they want, and others will play whatever the best DPS is. If 100% of hunters are playing the same spec, then clearly something is wrong and needs to be examined.
direbadgercvlry Jun 9th 2011 10:00PM
There was a talent pre cataclysm they had been talking about called rumba, chance on autoshot to call three snakes to attack or poison target but they felt like of made bm too machine gun, if they brought that back that'd be lovely.
Wistin Jun 9th 2011 10:11PM
I use intimidation a lot. It is great to interrupt trash. Never works on bosses, though.
Its long timer means I can't use it as often as the target casts, either.
ril-gania Jun 10th 2011 4:03AM
it would still be somewhat useful on bosses. i wouldn't want to be a main interrupter (thats the rogues and shamans role :P) but being able to interrupt as a backup would be great.
perderedeus Jun 9th 2011 10:58PM
BM's Signature Ability definitely needs love. Intimidation is, at best, just OK, and at worst, unusable in endgame PVE. You might get the opportunity to slip it in on trash packs, just for giggles... but it isn't on par with MM's Aimed Shot or SV's Explosive Shot.
Making Kill Command BM's signature ability would require compensation to MM and SV. Like it or not, it's a tool they have Right Now, and taking it away wouldn't exactly be fair. It has a use in PVP, when you are out of LOS of your target yet your pet is still on them. So.
Make Bestial Wrath BM's big ability. Let it scale up from level 10. If necessary, place a talent in the BM tree - where Bestial Wrath is now - to up it's power at an appropriate level, or put Intimidation there and increase it's power or functionality.
mibu.work1 Jun 10th 2011 8:09AM
Something I think many people are missing here is that Intimidation is unlike most other signature abilities. Aimed-shot and explosive shot are woven into rotations, buffed by various talents, and are usable every few seconds. They are mostly limited by their cast times and how they interact with other cooldowns. The same could be said about most DPS specs. Look at ret paladins, who can't use theirs until they have holy power, but still tend to use it on every single mob the encounter. Intimidation doesn't work as a signature ability because it has a 1 minute cooldown (approx) and doesn't work on raid bosses and most raid trash, deals no damage or healing, and can only be used while the pet is alive and in LoS and range. That's a lot of limitations for the defining unique ability of the spec.
As for fixing it, I'd say kill command should replace it. I honestly don't think MM or SV hunters would notice if it went away from them, and few would care once they noticed. In addition, pets that can fly or shoot projectiles SHOULD be able to attack flying enemies and do damage, so BM hunters are no longer weakened on flight-mode fights.
Also, another problem BM needs to have addressed: BM needs an inturrupt that works on bosses. As it stands, BM has scatter shot and Intimidation that can inturrupt spells, but both are technically stuns, and thus don't work on bosses, meaning BM hunters cannot help with interrupts on fights like Maloriak. BM needs an equivalent to silencing shot, perhaps tied in to intimidation.
BM needs to have its CC immunity restored to BW, as it is too easy to stun a Beastmaster, have him pop his CD's( including Master's call and BW) and then simply stun him again and watch his CD's tick away with no use. I'm aware this may cause problems in Raid encounters with a stun mechanic, but honestly, who's going to begrudge a hunter some extra damage when half of it depends on a computer-controlled companion with its own health pool and no survival instincts?
Not a talent problem, but All player-pets need to have their pathfinding fixed, or simply remove all obstetrical from raids, dungeons, arenas (blades edge in particular) battlegrounds, and the greater world in general that include a gap that requires jumping to get around. It is the ultimate injustice in an arena match to have a killing-spree buffed kill-command, an enemy player, and the perfect shot, only for them to jump off a platform, and watch in torment as your pet dashes off in compleatly the opposite direction, down a ramp, forward, and THEN start attacking, by which point your target is back to full health, having simply healed and moved on.
For that matter, (venting now) is it just me, or do mages, warlocks, and rogues all suddenly have self-heals built into their class? and hunters don't? (discounting spirit beast) and mages suddenly seem to have stealth that conceals them as they run, and doesn't show an outline when they move? Frost mages also seem to have deep-freeze, an ability that immobilizes and stuns their target (hunters), doesn't break for damage, and can immediately be followed up by a polymorph? I'm just saying (ranting).
Killik Jun 10th 2011 6:26AM
Mages didn't 'suddenly' get invisibility - it's been there since TBC. They'd have a more legitimate complaint that Hunters 'suddenly' have camo.
