Totem Talk: Trolling for elemental shaman gear in patch 4.1 and beyond

The proliferation of troll-themed gear is giving me bear run flashbacks. Are they giving you flashbacks, too? I must admit that eying up the new Voodoo Hexblade is filling me with the ghosts of gear-longing pasts, for once upon a time I was obsessed with Wub's Cursed Hexblade. I never got the damn thing, but the memory of The Burning Crusade makes me smile. That can only be a good thing, when studying the next generation of epics for my totem-toting class.
Thanks to crafting, rep gear, and the new troll dungeons, it is possible to get yourself fully kitted out in purples without setting foot in a raid. Of course, this gearing requires a little bit of luck, a lot of pugging, and a consistent time investment upon hitting level 85. However, we have covered getting an elemental shaman raid-ready a few months back, so while we look forward to patch 4.2, it is time to pick out some troll fashions and start saving for some new accessories.
Trolling for gear
Remember, even though haste and mastery are king, if you're wearing blues, then the sheer amount of intellect on these items will be an upgrade even you are trading some haste for crit. Und nau eet eez time to make de majicks!
- Helm Mask of Restless Spirits Daakara, Zul'Aman
- Shoulders Spiritbinder Spaulders Zanzil, Zul'Gurub
- Cloak Hakkari Loa Drape Bloodlord Mandokir, Zul'Gurub
- Chest Breastplate of Serenity High Priest Venoxis, Zul'Gurub
- Wrist Shadowmender Wristguards Halazzi, Zul'Aman
- Hands Mojo-Mender's Gloves Timed event, Zul'Aman
- Waist Hawkscale Waistguard Jan'alai, Zul'Gurub
- Legs Kilt of Forgotten Rites Wushoolay ,Zul'Gurub
- Rings Signet of Venoxis High Priest Venoxis, Zul'Gurub
- Rings Soul Drain Signet Hex Lord Malacrass, Zul'Aman
- Rings Shimmerclaw Band Halazzi, Zul'Aman
- Off-hands Zulian Ward Jin'do the Godbreaker, Zul'Gurub
- Weapons Legacy of Arlokk Jin'do the Godbreaker, Zul'Gurub
- Weapons Voodoo Hexblade Timed event, Zul'Aman
- Weapons Amani Scepter of Rites Daakara, Zul'Aman
Another item I've had trouble with is a belt upgrade. Sadly for me, Jan'alai, who denied me the Wub's Cursed Hexblade back in the day, still denies me. C'est la vie!
Spending justice points in patch 4.2
If, like me, you have been a little lax doing dailies and collecting valor points, in patch 4.2, all those lovely ilevel 359 items are coming to the justice point vendor. This patch will allow you to catch up super-fast while you save valor points for the new vendor epics. If you've got the basics (three pieces of tier gear), then I suggest you turn your attention to the following:
- Relic Norgannon or Eonar 770 justice points
- Ring Twined Band of Flowers or Band of Secret Names 1,250 justice points
- Cloak Haunt of Flies or Heavenly Breeze 1,250 justice points
A very productive way to get the most out of the i359 items is to buy the spirit/mastery item, and then reforge the mastery to haste in order to get a little of both stats. It all depends on how desperate you are for haste and whether you have a lot of hit and can afford to sacrifice some item budget on crit in order to get the haste. There is no hard and fast rule here, and as ever, it is worth playing around with Rawr, SimulationCraft, Bink's ERC spreadsheet, and Ask Mr. Robot in order to get the best out of your gear compilation.
Changes ahead for our spec
Before patch 4.2 went live on the PTR, I was very clear that I felt the new glyph signaled a change in the wind for the spec. Whether my gut feeling was right -- well, I plan to do a more comprehensive post on patch 4.2 closer to patch day.
In any case, if you want to be prepared for Firelands, you should be prepared to grab the new Glyph of Unleashed Lightning and start on those new Mount Hyjal dailies. The rep rewards from the new faction are extremely tasty -- and they are also the topic of another post.
As ever, if you want to chatter with me, you can find me on Twitter @mentalshaman, or you can send me an email. Until next time, keep throwing them totems!

Any word on which prime glyph we're dropping in order to pick up the new Glyph of Unleashed LIghtning? I'll assume Flame Shock but didn't know if any numbers have been crunched as of yet.
EaterOfBirds Jun 12th 2011 12:24PM
seems unclear so far. from what ive been reading on totemspot and the mmo champ forums it seems to be lava burst actually, but maybe flame shock if youre pro and can plan ahead pretty well. its a hard choice tbh, although the glyph for casting lb while moving sounds awesome, it seems an overly simple implementation. will we ever cast unleash elements again? SwG?
:/

While this is a nice overview of ZA/ZG gear, this would have been a better discussion for when the Zandalari heroics were first released.
As someone who is avidly checking WoW Insider daily for new 4.2 news, this post is disappointing. A look at the upcoming gear for ele shamans would have been great - there is a lot available on the the PTR on this.

lol with the new valor system nerf (7 Zul'agains = max valor for the week from raids), I'd say this article is unfortunately appropriate. Bec you guys will be on the hamster wheel for a while with the same two heroics, until 4.3 comes. Nothing too surprising with Activation-Blizzard cashing in on its cash cow.
connor.carleton Jun 12th 2011 2:15AM
I'd have to disagree Impresssunrise.
With valor gear becoming justice gear, and normal BWD/BoT/To4W raids being nerfed to hell and back there will be little need for ZA/ZG gear. Even a casual will be able to deck himself out in ilevel 359s granted the RNG loot gods favor him/her.
It will officially become the maelstrom zone. Lot's of bosses giving epics, and the content will eventually become out-dated enough to the point that pugging bear mounts will be a joke.
I don't want to bash Sarah here a lot, but talking about the ZA/ZG gear is really pointless. Even if it becomes the new valor farming site the gear will be irrelevant by all but the extreme non-raiding casuals.

The JP 359 kids will still heed hats, shoulders, weapons, wrists and all that other jazz you can't buy with points.
Pyromelter Jun 12th 2011 5:21AM
connor and murder, i think you missed impress's point.
Which is that you cap out on VALOR, not justice, by simply running the 2 troll heroics 7 times in a week. meaning a lot of people will be running it, whether they need loot or not. So to have a little handy guide available for maybe 1 or 2 specific pieces isn't so bad.
That means full current tier badge gear at the same rate as firelands raiders, without ever having to step into a firelands raid.
(I haven't kept up with the news on that, so I don't know if that's actually true, but that's what impress was saying.)

Pyro,
If this was a boss fight guide I'd agree, but there's no point to a guide about the gear when a ton of it's going to be gotten through VP. Not to mention a fair chunk of the ZA/ZG gear is not ideal for elemental. The helm and leggings are crap for us, and the hex-blade, and wrists aren't ideal.
Even if people are running them 24/7 now they still won't need much of the gear because more people will be running the nerfed BWD/BoT/To4W for other gear which will win out over this gear. This is loot that people will not (unless they are RNG unlucky) hold onto for very long, which is why I don't feel that a discussion about it is very necessary at this point in time.
More to the point though: information about this gear has been readily available for awhile. This information isn't really new or ground-breaking.
And personally I think, especially with 4.2 around the corner, articles should mainly be focused around the future of things to come for us, and what to expect. Not gear to get from heroics that will be replaced by nerfed raid content.

Interestingly enough, there was another Totem Talk article for Enhancement shaman posted by Josh Myers within 2 hours of this article - if you browse through that it is a very nice overview of upcoming gear, it was more of this type of thing which would have been great. Enhancement and Resto have been getting excellent coverage on WoW Insider, and I am envious.
Of the last 38 Totem Talk articles, 6 have been written for Elemental Shaman. Of those, there is this article, which really offers nothing new, and a Level 1-20 guide, which may be useful for some starting an alt, but not for the vast majority of established Elemental Shaman enthusiasts. Not to beat a dead horse, but I am really crossing my fingers and hoping for more frequent posts of better quality for us, as there really isn't much of a community for us to follow otherwise (Totem Spot is updated once every 2 months or less, and Zamir at Planet of the Hats has semi-retired his ele shaman musings). I totally understand that RL has been hectic, it happens to all of us, but when the articles are so few and far between, I think we would really like to see something on par with the articles put out by the other columnists - some fresh, new and intriguing information and/or insights.

Dreadmist,
This is Liax from below. For some reason when I put in my email in it just started calling me connor.carleton which means I may get stalked now if someone is good with computers. Good thing I don't FB at least...
If you'd like I wrote up a fairly informative 4.2 gear list for my own personal use/reference. If you want to create a bogus email to post for me I'd be more than happy to send it your way. It's not complete since not all the gear has been listed, but I'm pretty sure I've seen all the loot information that is currently available.
Liax Jun 11th 2011 11:00PM
The new lightning bolt glyph is going to be pretty situational. I'm not completely sold on it yet. Dropping flame shock for this makes our rotation very tight, and it will take a lot of adjusting to do. Dropping our other LB glyph is out of the question, and lava burst may be an option, but I'm not sold on that either.
It will probably see some daylight, but not a constant glyph.
As Dreadmist commented above I have to agree with him. Talking about Zandalari gear a week from 4.2 is a bit depressing. I know you said in an earlier post you have a lot of IRL going on, and that's understandable, but this kind of information has been readily available to us for awhile.
I did actually end up doing my own gear critque on it, but alas I am currently suspended...I think...it could be perma :*( on the official WoW forums or I would post it. It's not looking the greatest. There is a ton of spirit +haste/mastery items, and a lot of crit + haste/mastery. The entire loot table isn't released yet, but I have the feeling we will be using a lot of "spirit reforged into haste/mastery" gear.
Our tier is looking ok, and we will probably be replacing the helm or hands. I've also speculated on not even going for the 4 set bonus since it's just a slight boost to movement DPS (and it's going to be hard to have happen at the right time). The helm is spirit/haste IIRC, and there aren't any off-set gloves shown yet.

So I have two major players these days: A shadow priest and a shaman (usually resto, but off spce'd as elemental).
I'm very annoyed that my shadow priest who is LESS WELL GEARED was pumping 2-3k dps more than my elemental, who is stuck at 8-9 k.
Is it me? No really, maybe I'm not getting the rotation. Or are elemental shammies across the board doing less than they 'should' be.

The biggest challenge for me atm is getting the AoE rolling. Takes a while to ramp up, however when you get the multiple flame shock - fire nova combo down alongside lava busts and chain lightning (and the odd earthquake when the situation and numbers of adds allows) it really ramps up the meter. Some sort of nameplate mod, I use threat plates, helps a lot as you can set it up to see which mobs already have flame shock applied as you quickly switch around. You might have seen that fire nova is getting buffed in 4.2 in a couple of ways so if you can get 3+ mobs shocked and nova'd now on trash pulls it will pay off even more when the patch drops. Personally I think earthquake was more in need of a buff then fire nova - just doesn't feel competitive enough compared to other end talent tree abilities for me but I'm not gonna complain at the incoming changes!
Other than that look at the excellent 101 post on the Elitist Jerks forums and certainly dps of around 14-15k on most hc runs should be achiveable without being a top 1% player or being uber geared.
Matthew Jun 13th 2011 4:30PM
Thank you Ian.

Not everyone is eagerly ready for 4.2 to hit. My shaman alt hasn't quite hit 85 yet, and I found this post to be very valuable and concise.
If you guys want other articles written, write them instead of complaining about how someone else didn't. Sheesh.
