Blizzard teams up with Mega Bloks for Warcraft and StarCraft sets

What is most interesting to me about this licensing partnership is Blizzard's consolidation and general changing strategy regarding the World of Warcraft and StarCraft intellectual properties. In South Korea, StarCraft is already on everything you can imagine, and licensing in general is one of Blizzard's biggest assets (as it is for most content creators.) Does this licensing deal signal a renewed push to put Warcraft and StarCraft on lots of new, carefully hand-picked products? Suffice to say, I am excited about Blizzard's licensing future.
The sets are scheduled for release in summer 2012. We have no news on what characters or settings will be featured in the sets, but our imaginations can happily wander. Will we get vehicles? Iconic location play sets? Lore exposition in block form? I've got a few ideas...
- Mow your way through the Alliance front lines in the TRUE WARCHIEF™ Orc Catapult complete with Garrosh Hellscream and Captain Krazz exclusive figures!
- Protect your lands from the filth of the Forsaken in Genn Greymane's HOWL-ON-WHEELS™ combination Gilnean stagecoach and roadster. Exclusive Genn Greymane and Crowley figures!
- Stormwind is back with a vengeance as you pilot CHINSTAR-ONE™, the new (and totally canon) gnomish-built air-assault platform piloted by King Varian Wrynn. Exclusive Varian Wrynn figure comes with two faces -- Varian and Lo'Gosh (slightly angrier Varian).
- The fight against the elements rages as The Earthen Ring battle Deathwing and the elemental lords. Join the fight in Thrall's I DID NOT ASK FOR THIS™ modified Goblin earthfury tank. Exclusive Thrall figure comes with optional attachable Aggra.
- Hide in your ship for 2 expansions as the world around you is obliterated with THE EXODAR™ playset, complete with exclusive Velen figure who does nothing.

OMG! Lego Warcraft would get me to play consoles again! Just imagine lego Thrall in his own game... F*UCK YEAH!!!
Marshall Jun 13th 2011 5:26PM
This. This makes too much sense.
Also, I lol'd at "I DID NOT ASK FOR THIS™"
Though I'd think CHINSTAR-ONE™ would be Nefarian's human-form transport....
W01ph Jun 13th 2011 6:45PM
this would have to be the most epic idea ever!! too bad the blizz execs didn't think of it...
Rai Jun 13th 2011 10:12PM
"Too soon, Executus! To-wait, WHERE IS SULFURAS?!?"
A lego Ragnaros would be amazing, despite the risk of children swallowing his weapon.
Galaharenn Jun 14th 2011 4:46AM
Yes! Yes! Yes!
*swiftly hides her collection of Star Wars and Inidana Jones Lego and games under the bed*
Lego >>> Mega Blocks
Seriously, Lego Warcraft would probably have had me spending hundreds. Mega Block Warcraft, little to no chance.
Thomas Higgins Jun 14th 2011 11:11AM
Wow. I thought the idea of Lego Warcraft would be popular but not this popular. Pity Blizz hasn't seen the sense of it. Yet. And I do say yet. Lucas took ages to give the go ahead for Lego to use Star Wars for games and bricks. Same with Rowling and Warner Brothers with Harry Potter. And so will Blizz. Give them time.

Why MegaBlocks?!?! WHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYY???
Bleh... *goes back to playing with her Legos*
Atlon Jun 13th 2011 4:39PM
THE EXODAR sounds pretty badass to me.
PeeWee Jun 13th 2011 5:14PM
Build it up, let it crash and burn. Profit.

One can hope that Blizzard will let their contract with Mega Bloks lapse, and in a few years we'll get some awesome, official LEGO Warcraft/Starcraft sets... just like what happened with Pirates of the Caribbean. I love the look of the LEGO sets; not so much the old Mega Bloks ones.
That said, I'll probably pick up a few of the Warcraft-themed sets to augment my fantasy LEGO sets, IF they look at all good--for the minifigs if nothing else. I needs moar variety to the dwarves and trolls (orcs) I already have!
Nessy Jun 13th 2011 4:45PM
At first, I was like "Can't tell if trolling."
Then I found this http://www.megabrands.com/media/pdf/corpo/en/20110613.pdf
But why Mega Blocks? Lego is clearly superior.
Samutz Jun 13th 2011 4:53PM
It does almost seems like a trolling day for WoW Insider.
First the Aion ads, then McCurley spites Sacco in the Queue, now this?

Not LEGO because The LEGO Group tries to avoid anything that glorifies war, tragedy, and/or death. Ever notice that there aren't any miltary themes?
There are exceptions, of course, (oh hai, Battle Packs) but I don't think one could be made for StarCraft, which prominently features units which exist so you can destroy other units with them.
Warcraft could probably work, as WoW prominently features bands of adventurers going off and having adventures. I would assume LEGO would be the same as WoW where no one really cares about PvP, so we could get a bunch of sweet PvE-themed stuff.

"The LEGO Group tries to avoid anything that glorifies war, tragedy, and/or death. Ever notice that there aren't any miltary themes?"
No, they don't, and yes, there are. Granted, it's all stylized, but then, so is World of Warcraft.
I'll give a few contemporary examples.
Castle - war between living and undead
Ninjago - like Castle except with Ninjas
Bionicle, Hero Factory - they even have entire comic book series detailing the events of the wars between good and evil in these franchises
Pharaoh's Quest - The Mummy, Lego style
Star Wars - 'nuff said.
Need I continue?

"Hide in your ship for 2 expansions as the world around you is obliterated with THE EXODAR™ playset, complete with exclusive Velen figure who does nothing."
I almost covered my work computer monitor in coffee.
good job.

Sadly I have to agree with previous posters. MEGA Blocks suck.
Maevrim Jun 13th 2011 4:47PM
I actually just checked the calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st already. I'll have to buy three sets: for me, for each child....oh, and maybe my husband wants some, too.
Bart Jun 13th 2011 4:49PM
urgh...Had a Power Rangers Mega Blocks toy once, the blocks wouldn't stuck together and they felt really squishy.
Samutz Jun 13th 2011 4:49PM
Mega Bloks are to LEGOs as Rift is to WoW. Cheap knock offs.
sprout_daddy Jun 13th 2011 4:59PM
MEGA blocks is to building blocks what Velveeta is to cheese.
Is the new Activision Blizzard really so concerned about saving a buck that they will skimp that much on quality? Why would you ever take such iconic licensed characters and avoid an equally iconic brand in LEGO - it's a "you got peanut butter in my chocolate" kind of moment.
