"Players should no longer incorrectly receive a message stating they interrupted a spell cast when they did not."
....they told me I was crazy. All those spells I interrupted on boss fights only to have the tank spit at me and tell me to shut up and stop lying about interrupting it. I went to specialists. "Doctor, I...I interrupted that...the screen told me...." They told me I was mad. But I'll show them!

I know. You're not alone, son. You're not alone.

Interesting about the uPnP thing. I thought they had implemented that awhile ago because I never opened the ports up for it.
velutina Jun 14th 2011 10:25AM
I don't really understand what this means. Could those more technically knowledgeable explain this? From a security standpoint, is this good or not?
Dr Watson Jun 14th 2011 10:39AM
This basically means if you had to manually forward your ports in your router to fix download speed and/or latency you will no longer have to to that, the launcher will take care of all the work for you. UPnP means "Universal Plug N Play"
Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play :
"The concept of UPnP is an extension of plug-and-play, a technology for dynamically attaching devices directly to a computer, although UPnP is not directly related to the earlier plug-and-play technology. UPnP devices are "plug-and-play" in that when connected to a network they automatically establish working configurations with other devices."

It doesn't necessarily affect security, but it does make life easier for those who are less technologically knowledgeable.
Dr Watson Jun 14th 2011 10:42AM
And as long as you have an antivirus, firewall and malware remover you will be fine
Good free products:
Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx)
MalwareBytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/)
And of course the built in Win 7 firewall (there are free, decent ones but so far I haven't had problems with the default one)

Ports are like doors in computer security. When you're the only one around and going in and out of a door a lot, you might prop it open so you don't have to keep opening it when you're carrying something through. Some programs have trouble getting through a certain kind of security (NAT) on routers (that have it) and you can either open the ports yourself or struggle along. This lets the less knowledgeable not have that kind of problem.
And yes, this is a very simplistic metaphor.

FYI: clicking random links people put on websites is far more dangerous to security than what blizzard is doing here. That being said, the links the good doctor has put here are good free programs that make your computer very safe.

@Dr Watson: Why would forwardning ports fix latency problems?
Brainded Jun 16th 2011 9:49AM
Of course, the UPnP change won't help anyone who cannot download patches because they are, for example, on a college campus where the required ports are blocked to the entire campus. Blizzard needs to put in the capability to fall back to purely HTTP (port 80) in these cases.

"Applicable tier 11 items now cost Justice Points."
Applicable is the key word here. Head and shoulder pieces will still require tokens.

Nor do I ever see myself opening up ports and especially not for a game as popular as WoW. I.e., whatever you think about WoW security, sheer size makes it a target.

WTB bug fixes for the "stuck in combat" and "can not enter instance while encounter is in progress" in the Zandalari heroics. Bad enough we have to deal with reconstituted old content, but at least make sure the stuff works b4 releasing it.
CraigNeigel Jun 13th 2011 11:26PM
Umm, The "can not enter instance while encounter is in progress" is done on purpose I beleive.
the Stuck in combat. I agree though.
Necromann Jun 13th 2011 11:46PM
I have had times in the Zul Heroics when everyone is dead, but no one can get into the instance because of that error mssg. It has only happened a couple times for me and they were in the first week of 4.1.
cyanea85 Jun 14th 2011 5:25AM
"Umm, The "can not enter instance while encounter is in progress" is done on purpose I beleive."
In raids, yes. You can enter while your group is in combat in 5-mans though.
eric_r_smith Jun 14th 2011 10:33AM
After reading and testing, I can say that it is most probable that someone in your troll dungeon groups that get stuck in combat has a combat pet that was once a dungeon boss.
For example, if you have a hunter in the group using Chromaggus, you will probably get the stuck in combat bug. Only once did we get out of that and I couldn't repeat how to get out of the bug. I can, however, repeat nearly every time, if not every time, the bug by simply pulling out the former Chromaggus and getting into a boss fight.
bluskreem Jun 14th 2011 3:16AM
What? No more boss shrinking? I can n ot tell you how sad this makes me.
wutsconflag Jun 14th 2011 2:38PM
Worst. Bugfix. EVER.
Shrinking Onyxia was always the best part of that encounter!
