Here's a point: The bigger the price of an item, the more money you can make from buying and selling it. The reason darkmoon trinkets work so well is that you can buy one for 15k one day and sell it for 20k the next day, and people don't bat an eyelid.
I actually made quite a profit just buying cards when they were cheaper than usual then waiting for a DMF and selling the full trinkets. I made my own tsunami trinket for around 8k when it was selling for 25k on my realm, without any inscription character. Because the cards are made randomly, supply spikes for random cards. You can buy it low when there are lots of the same card on the AH and sell it high when there are none.
That said, this all only really worked at the beginning of the expansion, and I was far too lazy to keep it up, which is why I'm constantly skint.
