MMO Roundup: Family Guy, Harry Potter, and more

Fox unveils Family Guy Online ... really Yeah. You're seeing that right. Family Guy Online. It may be a bit early to say, but we can probably add this one to the list of worst MMOs ever in advance. Details are scarce at the moment, but Fox has already set up a social media presence and a pre-beta website. |

Is Pottermore the upcoming Harry Potter MMO? The Harry Potter fanbase was abuzz yesterday as a mysterious new website was launched. The site itself is rather bare, merely sporting the words "Pottermore: Coming Soon" and J.K. Rowling's signature underneath, but there's reason to believe that this may be connected to an online game ... or just a social hub for Potter fans. |

The Perfect Ten: Shapeshifters Enjoy playing a druid in WoW? Wondering what other MMOs feature shapeshifting classes or effects? From RIFT to Guild Wars to City of Heroes, this week's Perfect Ten has what you need. |

Is Turbine working on a console MMO? Internet scuttlebutt has it that Turbine is cooking up a console MMO codenamed Project Hendrix. A posting at GameSpot cites a Turbine job listing that seeks an engineer for an "unannounced online console project." Turbine's console aspirations are nothing new, as studio VP Craig Alexander hinted at such desires as early as 2009. |

Massively Speaking episode 153 Massively Speaking, Massively's MMO podcast, returns this week with Shawn and Rubi reminiscing on E3 through this year's awards. Other topics include the LulzSec DDOS attacks and Fallen Earth's acquisition by GamersFirst. They also read through a listener email and clarify their annoyance at kill-10 quests. |

Massively's week in review Don't let WoW Insider do all of the talking when it comes to Massively's best content of the week. The Massively staff themselves have picked out what they think is the best content their site has to offer in their own weekly roundup. |

Family Guy Online will be the true WoW killer.

Nerf Quagmire!!

Meg needs buffs, nobody wants to play her.

I haven't been to Massively before, but if the shapeshifting article is par for the course then I shouldn't bother going back. If a site publishes authors that don't do even minimal research on what they're writing about then I can't imagine they're publishing stuff worth reading.

A lot of their articles are poorly written and they show extreme bias towards certain games, this one included. That's why I avoid that site like the plague.

A lot of Massively's articles, while well intentioned, do suffer from a serious game bias problem. It's a simple fact of the MMO genre that almost nobody plays more than a couple of MMOs at once due to the time investment required - and so writing for a site as deliberately broad as Massively is, it's always going to be difficult to give all games the attention they deserve.

A Harry Potter MMO could be fascinating, if they set it post-books. That might be enough to tempt me away from WoW for a bit.
Tyswtor Jun 21st 2011 4:10PM
if anything it should be pre books...like a couple hundred years before
acarlosa99 Jun 21st 2011 4:23PM
I think it should be post-books - if Hogwarts was a playable zone, I'd spend my life away looking for lore tid-bits regarding Dumbledore, Harry's family and Riddle!!
Aww, now I really want this to happen!!
mazca13 Jun 21st 2011 4:23PM
I would be very intrigued at a Harry Potter MMO, but I'm really struggling to think of how they could possibly make it not suck. The universe is really rather constrained by trying to exist in parallel with the non-wizard world.

I'm so excited! Finally a game that will let me play as a muggle person! I can't wait!
Well. This and Family Guy Online. That makes two! So excited!

If it was post books then it would be way too restricted in terms of story....thatd be like setting a star wars game right after vader dies
Fox Van Allen Jun 21st 2011 4:44PM
holy crap lois
Sedna Jun 21st 2011 5:21PM
"Hehehehehe. Hey Lois, remember that time I made Joe kite the adds on Magmaw?"
Sedna Jun 21st 2011 5:24PM
...I'm going to hell, aren't I.

Anyone know where the header pic's from? Triple skull dude looks epic
Pyromelter Jun 22nd 2011 6:48AM
It's from Rift, and the big undead angel of death is a Necromancer in his 31-point talent called Lich Form (imagine a death dealing destructive temporary buff, kind of like the opposite of a druid in Tree form in wow these days).
The smaller undead rogue looking thing is the Necromancer's pet. It comes from the Perfect Ten: Shapeshifter link above.
It is a pretty epic form, when you shift into that form, any time you move it has you kind of floating forward, since the robes go all the way to the ground.

I so hope the announcement is for harry potter ebooks...
