"You could point to specific examples of leveling guides and other flukes, but there is just as good a free option over the pay option. In fact, with the changes to the way the game questing model works, I am absolutely unsure of why anyone would need a for-pay leveling guide at all. That seems like the biggest waste of money to me, especially for how much they cost. Nothing in this game needs to be paid for to be played efficiently."I think you've gone a little overboard here, with stating your opinion as fact. Normally I find your posts to be well reasoned and thoughtful, but in this section you let your bias show through without any concideration for the topic of your post and in the process made some pretty silly comments. For example: "I am absolutely unsure of why anyone would need a for-pay leveling guide at all" Of course no one needs a for pay leveling guide. No one has ever needed any kind of leveling guide. They weren't even needed in Vanilla WoW when leveling was the hardest. Obviously you don't see the value they provide, but don't confuse that with them being useless or a waste of money for others. What I find really disappointing about this post, is that you didn't even concider the legal question regarding leveling guides. It doesn't even look like you looked into it at all. You dismiss leveling guides as a "fluke," rather then looking at the Brian Kopp case, are addressing some of the guides claims to be in compliance with Blizzard free addon policy. Whatever your opinion of a product is, that shouldn't prevent you from doing your job or presenting the topic from a legal standpoint rather then stating your own opinion as fact. For the record, I've leveled many toons in this game and almost all of them have used one leveling guide or another. Several of them were free, a few of them I payed for. (I am also an affilate for one guide in the interests of full disclosure) I completely agree that some of the free guides are very good, and have always said that no one needs to pay for a leveling guide. That said, in my experiance the for pay guides have tended to be better, because they do the little things better. I have found them to be organized better, more stable, and provide more information and easier advancement. The free guides also don't aways have the best update history.I agree that with the updates blizzard has made to Questing in Cataclysm that, leveling guides aren't nearly as helpful as they were when I first started using them almost 5 years ago, but I still find them to be helpful, and I have found the for pay guides I've used to be higher quality then the free ones available.
