The Light and How to Swing It: Kitting out your tank with the new starter gear of patch 4.2

Personally, I am really excited about being able to once again be excited about gear with the launch of 4.2. It's a chance to start fresh with your tanking kit, in a manner of speaking. It's like approaching a newly opened buffet, as opposed to right now when you're picking at whatever is left on the table. Every slot is up for grabs to be populated by new shinies.
With the start of the new tier, there are several new avenues of gearing that you can pursue. Blacksmiths with have new patterns, quests will open up new rewards, the Avengers of Hyjal have goodies for the taking, and of course the new raid will provide a wealth of new purples from its myriad encounters.
Some pieces are fantastic, some are so-so, some are total head scratchers. In this column I'll go down a slot-by-slot list of the new gear from iLevels 365-378 to show what's available where for your toon. With this knowledge in hand, you will have an excellent basis to plan out your gearing strategy for the following tier.
The name of the game is still mastery
The pieces beyond tend to fall into four priority categories depending on their secondary stat allocation: mastery/avoidance, avoidance/avoidance, mastery/threat, avoidance/threat. In that order. With the second option, you want to reforge one of your avoidance stats (depending on your current balance) to mastery. Likewise, for pieces with threat (i.e., hit or expertise), convert the threat to mastery or the most appropriate avoidance.
Just like at the start of 4.0, the best stat for you will be mastery. This is especially true now that the Holy Shield buff (I'm legally obligated to use the "b" word now!) makes block capping a priority in order to squeeze every delicious drop of mitigation from the change. You'll want to continue to reforge mastery onto every piece, as well as employ mastery-themed gemming and enchanting.
Ideally, block capping will be very likely this tier with all the gobs of new stats that comes with higher iLevels. Initially, you may have to employ some fancy tricks, like dual mastery trinkets or gemming outside of socket bonuses. Keep in mind, however, that you don't want to shoot yourself (and your survivability) in the foot to grab extra mastery when it might be untenable. That said, the loot is on fire!
Head
There's really only one obvious choice here, as the Helm of Blazing Glory (which drops off Baleroc) has that wonderful mastery/avoidance itemization. There's also the Immolation Faceguard, our tier helm, with a less optimal parry/expertise setup. Getting it depends on a token drop from within the Firelands.
Neck
Best initial choice is thankfully very easy to get -- the Stoneheart Necklace is available from the valor point vendor for the cool price of 1,250 VP. There's also the (presumably trash drop) Firebound Gorget. The lower iLevel Fireheart Necklace is available after completing the Molten Front quest Through the Gates of Hell.
Shoulders
No mastery/avoidance options here, unfortunately. Our choices are the Spaulders of the Recurring Flame, which drop off Alysrazor in the Firelands, or the Immolation Shoulderguards from a token drop.
Cloak
While the iLevel 378 Durable Flamewrath Greatcloak is (obviously) a higher iLevel than the i365 Mantle of Patience, the latter is actually a far better choice off the bat because of its magical mastery/avoidance combination. The Greatcloak is available from the Avengers of Hyjal rep vendor at Friendly, while the Mantle is from the Thrall quest chain. So, not only is the Mantle a better option but it's easier to get as well.
Chest
You'll probably end up with the Immolation Chestguard as one of your early valor point pickups (cost: 2,200 VP). A fine choice, though shed a small tear for the much better itemized Carapace of Imbibed Flame, which drops from Beth'tilac.
Waist
An easy pickup here as well. The best choice is the Girdle of the Indomitable Flame from the Avengers of Hyjal quartermaster for only Honored reputation. The other option is the Uncrushable Belt of Fury, which drops from Shannox in the Firelands.
Wrist
Multiple options here. The best are the Bracers of the Fiery Path, which drops from Majordomo Staghelm in the Firelands. There's also the Bracers of Regal Force, which is presumably a trash drop. Lastly, you can pick up the Gigantiform Bracers (great name) for 1,250 valor points from the vendor.
Hands
Best choice is, happily, the Immolation Handguards from the valor points vendor for 1,650 VP. Then there are the Eternal Elementium Handguards which are craftable by blacksmiths.
Legs
The best choice for the leg slot is the Immolation Legguards tier piece, costing 2,200 VP at the vendor. Your second best choice are the Legplates of Frenzied Devotion, which drop off Shannox in the Firelands.
Feet
Multiple choices here -- the best choice being the Mirrored Boots, which are crafted by blacksmiths. Following that are the Cracked Obsidian Stompers, which drop from Lord Rhyolith. There's also the i365 option, from Molten Front quests, the Pyrelord Greaves. Even with the expertise, the second choice is definitely better than the third, as it can be reforged to offer more total avoidance.
Shield
Woe to us, that we have this horrifically ugly shield foisted upon us. The Shard of Torment is quite possibly the worst looking shield since the Shieldwall of the Breaker from Ulduar/Auriaya. I can consider myself a connoisseur of fine bulwarks, and I must say, and this is a terrible piece of hardware. I look forward to jabbing out the eyes of my enemies with those ghastly horns. Or myself, so I don't have to look at it anymore. Whichever comes first.
Weapon
Easy choice here, the Mandible of Beth'tilac is obviously superior with a combination of avoidance and mastery, and it drops off the first boss of the Firelands to boot. There's also the Obsidium Cleaver, which looks like a trash drop. At the very least, the Cleaver will be available on the auction house (as it's BOE).
Trinkets
I'm a bit taken aback by some of these trinkets, as they have some of the most unique procs I've seen in a long, long time. The obvious choice for best trinket is the Spidersilk Spindle, with its mastery base and excellent proc. For a second mastery trinket, you can use the (more DPS-oriented) Essence of the Eternal Flame, available from the Avengers of Hyjal at revered. For a mystery/avoidance trinket, you can check out the Stay of Execution, also available from the Avengers of Hyjal at revered. Rounding out the pack are the two stamina trinkets, the Scales of Life (trash drop; BOE) and the Moonwell Phial (i365; from Molten Front quests).
Rings
Aside from the religious obligation that we all wear Theck's Emberseal (despite Blizzard slandering the poor guy with a less than optimally itemized ring -- nonetheless, horses and mouths and such), the best two choices are the Adamantine Signet of the Avengers, from the Avengers of Hyjal, and the Deflecting Brimstone Band, sold by the valor point vendor for 1,250 VP.
Relic
Because it lacks mastery, the Deathclutch Figurine, is a bit disappointing. Even when reforged, it comes up almost 0.5% short in its i378 incarnation. The i359 Relic of Khaz'goroth is a far better choice for maximizing combat table coverage. Nonetheless, if you're looking to pick the Deathclutch Figurine up, the valor point vendor has it for 700 VP.

Just fyi, you mixed up the Gigantiform bracers and Bracers of Regal force tooltips. Great article though, extremely helpful!
Cadius Jun 24th 2011 2:15PM
There's also the Bracers of Regal Force, which is presumably a trash drop. Lastly, you can pick up the Gigantiform Bracers (great name) for 1,250 valor points from the vendor.
the 2 item links in here are swapped around.
Matt Walsh Jun 24th 2011 2:30PM
I fixed the bracer tooltips, thanks for the heads up kerese and Cadius!
Nagheen Jun 24th 2011 2:32PM
The Obsidium Cleaver is made by Blacksmiths, they also have a 1h tanking sword, and if wowhead would be accessible, I'd link it.
If I recall the mats are at least 8 truegold and 6 Chaos orbs and some other stuff, but don't know for sure.
Nagheen Jun 24th 2011 2:37PM
Found them, confused the Obsidium Cleaver with this one: (http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=70158)
anyway, this is the sword: (http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=70163).
Kragragh Jun 24th 2011 2:45PM
In "trinkets" you called mastery mystery.
Matt Walsh Jun 24th 2011 2:51PM
That was on purpose, it refers to the crazy on-use effect.
Fatbeard Jun 24th 2011 2:54PM
Great article, I always love these. I was wondering though, if it would be too much trouble to update some the slots where you only listed Firelands raid gear (drops or tokens) with options we can get outside of raiding?
lownwolf Jun 24th 2011 2:56PM
kinda disappointed that we have such a great looking tier set, but some of the BiS pieces make us look like wannabe warriors :(
specifically, wannabe warriors wearing a dress
pancakes Jun 25th 2011 12:27AM
Yeah, I was really hoping our headpiece would be BiS. I love the floating halo/wreath thingy.

@Matt Walsh:
Second to last sentence starts with a double t. No one needs that much caffeine late in the day. :-p
Matt Walsh Jun 24th 2011 3:56PM
Corrected, thanks for the heads up!
(And I beg to differ on the second point, haha)
Vael Jun 24th 2011 3:42PM
Also, for the Relic slot, would http://ptr.wowhead.com/item=70128 be an option?
Relic of Tortolla
Binds when picked up
Relic
+114 Strength
+170 Stamina
Prismatic Socket
Requires Level 85
Item Level 365
Equip: Increases your parry rating by 66 (0.37% @ L85).
Equip: Increases your expertise rating by 81 (2.70 @ L85).
Granted, I haven't been on the PTR, so this item might have not made it to live.
Matt Walsh Jun 24th 2011 3:56PM
Sadly, that's even worse than the new VP relic. Stick with the 359 mastery one for now.
Vael Jun 24th 2011 4:21PM
Good to know, thanks! I'm not a dedicated raider by any means, and though I do my reading on EJ and whatnot, I still have lots to learn.
Noyou Jun 24th 2011 4:34PM
Come on! I'll take anything endorsed by Tortolla! Was my favorite NPC from cata so far. Hope this does make live ;)
That one Joey Jun 24th 2011 4:45PM
Great article. My pally is currently ilvl 352 and sitting around 152k health unbuffed, 50% block, ~23% dodge/parry. (So I guess you would call that ~73% combat coverage?). In the opinions of readers, would my pally fare well in firelands?
Heres an armory link: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/ghostlands/Zarkul/simple
That one Joey Jun 24th 2011 4:49PM
I am missing a few enchants :( (helm, shoulders and I think bracers.)
I'm still in quite a few 346's. Though I gem vigorously towards mastery!
Zainir Jun 24th 2011 5:33PM
Is it worth it to go for the four piece T12 bonus or is the parry not as great as it sounds? A whole 10 seconds of yummy avoidance sounds pretty good, but I'm probably missing something (DR making it not so great or something.)
Jeff Jun 25th 2011 1:53AM
I love how every article I read here that pertains to tanks seems to be curiously devoid of any Druid tips.
