The OverAchiever: Mountain O' Mounts in Cataclysm

The problem with doing extended series like our Mountain O' Mounts overview is that Blizzard's pretty good at rendering them obsolete before long. In that vein, there are a few mounts on today's list that weren't in the game back when we started. Unless I pick up the pace, there might wind up being another slew of them. With 200+ mounts already in the game, the possibility of that genuinely frightens me.
Warning: There are spoilers past the cut concerning some mounts that will become available in patch 4.2 and how you get them.
As always, this is the full series if you're just catching up with us:
- Combining The Ambassador and Mountain O' Mounts
- Mountain O' Mounts in Outland
- Mountain O' Mounts in Northrend
- Mountain O' Mounts in 5-man dungeons
- Mountain O' Mounts in raids
- Mountain O' Mounts from achievements
- Mountain O' Mounts from PVP
- Mountain O' Mounts from professions
- Mountain O' Mounts from holidays
Zul'Gurub used to be the old raid you did every few days in order to not get a raptor or tiger drop. Now it's a heroic 5-man you can do every day in order to not get a raptor or panther drop. The more things change ...
- Armored Razzashi Raptor Like its predecessor, the Swift Razzashi Raptor, you'll find this as a random drop off Bloodlord Mandokir -- or, if you're playing one of the specs being sought by the Call to Arms system through the dungeon finder, it has a random chance of appearing in your goody bag.
- Swift Zulian Panther The original Zul'Gurub cat mount, the Swift Zulian Tiger, dropped off a boss that no longer exists, so High Priestess Kilnara is the boss you're looking for nowadays. Of interest is that this is pretty close to the cat model being ridden by the Darnassian sentinels, rather than the armored version offered by the night elves through the Argent Tournament. The sentinels' mount is also one of the night elves' original epic mounts, the Nightsaber, so this is as close as you're going to get to a mount that has long since vanished from the game. I guess the sentinels eschew armor in favor of speed.
The revamped Zul'Aman is generally considered the more difficult of the two re-introduced "Zuls," and in some ways that's true of the new mount drop there as well. While the raptor and the panther from ZG are simply random drops, you have to land a group with a bit of skill -- or, failing that, a group with a bit of gear -- in order to have a crack at the revamped version of the Amani War Bear.
- Amani Battle Bear This is a slightly more subdued version, color wise, of the War Bear. Getting both is/was a matter of beating the clock once you've started the dungeon. However, as gear improves over the expansion, I'd expect this to become the latter-day equivalent of the Bronze Drake in that landing a group that doesn't make the mount timer is more notable than landing one that does.
I think Vashj'ir represents the first time in the game where you'll get a permanent mount simply as a matter of normal questing.
- Abyssal Seahorse There are technically two versions of this mount, but only one is permanent and counts toward the Mountain O' Mounts achievement. The Subdued Abyssal Seahorse is the "quest mount" you'll get fairly early in Vashj'ir, and it turns into the perma-mount as soon as you finish the quest series. It's pretty cool to be able to rocket around Vashj'ir as quickly as this thing goes, and hey! It's pretty!
For everyone who loved spending weeks to months trying to get the Time-Lost Proto-Drake in Wrath of the Lich King, congratulations! You have another open-world mount to drive yourself nuts chasing! I'll grant that this one is a little less frustrating than the Time-Lost, as Aeonaxx doesn't appear to share a spawn with other rares. Then again, there are some phases in Deepholm questing where apparently you can't see him at all. The gin's over there on the sideboard. Why do you ask?
- Phosphorescent Stone Drake While running around Deepholm you may be lucky enough to happen across Aeonaxx, a very large, blue-hued stone dragon with turquoise-ish crystals. Most people find him pathing somewhere around the Temple of the Earth; he doesn't seem to spend much time around the edges of the zone. That's both good news and bad news for you, because you're likely to see him while going about your regular business in Deepholm, but then again, so is everyone else. He's a vehicle and starts off friendly, so you'll be given an option to mount him, at which point he becomes not so friendly. Aeonaxx has 774,900 health and will summon a number of Young Stone Drakes to attack you with fireballs (they don't hit for much; about 2-3K each), so he's not appreciably tougher to get down than the Time-Lost was, unless you're a hunter who is now trapped on top of a giant, pissed-off dragon with no access to your primary weapon due to minimum range. Have fun with that!
I'm not sure which is worse: Spending weeks flying around Deepholm without ever once seeing the Phosphorescent Drake, or spending weeks flying around Uldum without once seeing the specific tiny camel figurine you need.
- Grey Riding Camel We've actually run an edition of OverAchiever dedicated to the Grey Riding Camel previously just because the hunt for it is such a unique experience. Please, Blizzard -- more stuff like this. It's frustrating, but in the best possible way because it's such a clever addition to the game.
This and the Firelands raid drops below aren't actually in the game yet; we'll see them in patch 4.2, which is likely to hit next week.
- Flameward Hippogryph Words fail me: This thing looks absolutely amazing. As you complete quests for the Regrowth and Molten Front in Mount Hyjal, you'll get access to vendors selling some cool gear and -- we thought -- this mount. However, on the PTR players started getting this in the mail from Malfurion Stormrage as a means of thanking them for finishing the full quest series rescuing Mount Hyjal from Ragnaros' flunkies. For the moment, I'm going to assume it's a gift rather than a purchase, which kind of makes it sweeter.
If you don't want one of the following, you probably have no soul.
- Holy crap phoenixes You've probably seen these (video above) on MMO Champion (which is still down, unfortunately, so I can't point you in the direction of Boubouille's data mining), and as far as we know there will be three colors available. However, they all seem to be listed under a varying set of names, so which one's which is a bit of a guess. I've seen the Crimson Fire Hawk, the Corrupted Fire Hawk, the Pureblood Fire Hawk, the Beryl Fire Hawk, and the Green Fire Hawk. As far as I'm aware, the Beryl Fire Hawk is the reward for the Glory of the Firelands Raider, the Pureblood is a rare drop from Ragnaros, and ... and I'm getting hopelessly muddled.

Vash is also where you can find the Reins of Poseidus if you're lucky enough to get in a group and win the roll. You can also buy it off the AH (180K last I saw on my server).
Kittens Jun 24th 2011 8:42PM
You don't need a group for Poseidus. But you will need a lot of luck and/or camping :)
He is basically the Time-Lost Protodrake of Cata.

Ah, the mount was added in 4.1 at the same time as the group-kill rares had their loot upgraded. I just assumed that he too was a group kill.
LynMars Jun 24th 2011 7:23PM
There are also the 2 camels you can buy once Exalted with the Ramkahen. You can't even see them in the vendor's list before then.

So the hippogryph is from doing all the quests? I'll head over to Hyjal and finish the line. I got the loremaster and moved one. I did Vashj first and only wanted Hyjal for the achieve.
Revynn Jun 24th 2011 7:44PM
Not quite.
Questing through Hyjal unlocks access (or will, once 4.2 launches) to the Firelands Daily Quest hubs.
Completely progressing all of the Firelands dailies (kinda like getting Crusader from the Argent Tournament) gets you the Hippogryph.
Zankoku Jun 24th 2011 7:53PM
If i heard correctly, the new hippogryph is for completing the NEW daily zone, not the entirety of Hyjal. Tho finishing Hyjal is certainly epic :))) one of my favorite zones in Cata
Necromann Jun 24th 2011 8:01PM
Ok finish all of the 4.2 quests.

I'm confused at the comment that zulaman is harder than zulgurub, i've done aman a lot, and only the last boss and only if it's the lynx/firebird combo is it hard in the slightest.
ZG however, pot boss, stupid end boss (seriously the spirits pretty much devour non plate), oh whoops you weren't near a chain, I pretty much 1-2 shot every boss in ZA having never done the ptr, took my guild group the better part of an hour to down the end boss in ZG.
jimb726 Jun 28th 2011 10:08AM
I totally agree. I can spend hours in ZG with a pug and the only wipe free Zandalari runs I have ever had were ZA runs. I really don't understand how people think this.
MusedMoose Jun 24th 2011 8:09PM
...oi. And I was planning to take down Aeonaxx with my hunter. @_@ Ah, the joys of deciding he'll go for any mount where he has to fight the creature to get it as a mount. At least I'm now forewarned. ^_^
TheDoomcookie Jun 25th 2011 4:14AM
Actually, blizzard fixed the Aeonaxx encounter a while back so that hunters could use their ranged weapons.
arkhan Jun 24th 2011 8:23PM
"as Aeonaxx doesn't appear to share a spawn with other rares"
He does, actually. With a NPC named Blood Seeker. The relationship between the two seems to be the same as the one between TLPD and Vyragosa.
brighthammer Jun 24th 2011 11:22PM
Um, why do you think the zg mounts drop from the cta bag? I was really excited about getting them from the bag at first too, (the wording of the pertinent blue posts suggested we'd see ANY dungeon mount in the bag) but wowhead hasn't seen any in the satchel yet : (
In fact, the drops from the satchel are very limited, only have one mount I don't have atm.
Necromann Jun 25th 2011 9:37AM
I got the blue proto drake from the satchel. It happened to be the only dungeon mount I already had. Should have shift-clicked it and i would have 2 toons with blue protos instead of 1 toon with the mount and the reins in his bank.
marcus Jun 25th 2011 12:12AM
And by the way, aeonaxx is just as insanely hard to get as the time lost proto drake. I actually just got both of mine. Aeonaxx last Friday and time lost on Monday. After hunting time lost for over a year and aeonaxx since level 82 before anyone even had a hint of info I sat in deepholm for 5 days before finally deciding to level, and then spent 5 months of and on, then a straight 589 hours without ever logging off to get him, so yes it is just as hard if not harder considering there's now 6 spots instead of 4 from the time lost, and the fact that blood seeker is only up for 7 decode tops, so u cannot go looking for it like you could for vyragosa. Best of luck to those who wanna never sleep again.
Fletcher Jun 25th 2011 6:51AM
I got Aeronaxx on my second rogue at 83 while questing through Deepholm. Saw a dragon-y shadow overhead, looked up and there he was!
So really all it takes is the favour of the RNG gods; sacrifice a zhevra hoof or raptor head and win their blessing before going out to search for him. Or just get lucky.
RFTHOMSO Jun 25th 2011 7:56AM
basically evrything you said about aeonaxx is wrong:
A) blizzard has said multiple times that phasing does not affect anyones ability to see aeonaxx
B) hunters can use their ranged weapons against aeonaxx, and have been able to for a long time (they couldnt early in cata)
C) there is very much another rare that shares a spawn, called bloodeeker.
I usually love this site but the quality (or lack thereof) of info from this article is laughable
Noyou Jun 25th 2011 11:38AM
So if you usually like it but the one (of ferw) time(s) you don't think it's up to par you belittle the writer. Class move. Next time you visit your favorite restaurant and the service is a little off or your food is a little off pull aside the waitress or chef and say "it was laughable" and see how it works out for you the next time you roll in.
robertfthomson3 Sep 23rd 2011 9:49PM
I would if there was an "add your comment" feature at such restaurant, like there is for this and all other pieces on this site.
And yeah if i notice something on this site that is lacking or an article with completely wrong info i am gonna point it out, especially when they basically ask for it by having a commenting system
