My wife, when she was playing hardcore, loved 2 activities as much as she did raiding: fishing and working the AH. She had 5 level capped toons with capped fishing. And she thought nothing of logging in, checking the AH to see what fish were going for lots of gold, and then riding to the extreme reaches of Azeroth (this was before Cata, so no flying in the old country) to fish for, say, a couple hours. She'd come back with 15 or 20 stacks of the good stuff, and then start working on the auctions.
Her goal was to get to 100K gold across all toons, but she never made it. The closest she got was just over 88K. But to her, if she had less than 40K, she was starting to feel "cash poor". She just recently quit to take a long break, and when she parked her bank alt, she had just under 80K, total.
I never did all that, but I still have around 20K across all toons, and typically have 1500-2500g on hand for any active toon.
