Firelands: WoW Insider's first impressions

Patch 4.2 has been live on servers for a little over 24 hours now, which means that the Firelands raid is just as new. Hardcore raiders that we are (well, some of us), a team of WoW Insider writers headed into the raid instance on its inaugural night with the intent of offering our first impressions.
How would the new encounters test healers? What kind of issues would tanks face? Would crowd control efforts would be necessary? Matt Low of Raid RX, warrior tank Mat McCurley, and enhancement shaman Josh Myers all headed into the Firelands to find out. What follows are their insights and opinions from the point of view of a healer, a tank, and a DPSer, respectively.
A healer's perspective by Matt Low
It was the best of raids, it was the worst of raids. A new raid instance ripe for pickings and plunder. We thought we were equipped and prepared. We figured we could challenge and take down bosses right off the bat. It turns out our intelligence was faulty, and several minor changes were made that changed the scope of the encounter. As a healer, it was a nonstop experience of observing heart-wrenching drops in health. Sometimes I was able to salvage players; other times, I had no choice but to watch players drop to zero.
The amount of trash was just massive. While some of the trash gimmicks were fun and interesting, the sheer numbers are going to make this raid get old fast.
The big change I found with my experiences healing both Shannox and Beth'tilac was that both encounters felt really bursty for healing. Naturally, I attribute much of that to just learning new encounters and mechanics. Even though the damage coming in was fast and insane, I didn't think it was possible for it to get any crazier. But it certainly got crazier! The 25-player version of the raid instance feels easier as you have more of a safety net with additional healers and players around. When I was killing trash on 10-player, I sometimes felt exposed with occasional tank instant deaths.
All in all, Firelands looks to be an exciting and engaging raid for healers and has so far matched my expectations from the PTR. But we'll find out how it ranks once we get all the way to the end.

As a main tank, Firelands has so far been more an exercise in execution than in actual threat management or stats. On the Shannox fight, tanks are more concerned about positioning and timing than keeping aggro on their targets. The timing of the debuffs tanks receive is a crucial aspect of the fight and can make or break the attempt. On Beth'tilac, tanking is about kiting and positioning on the bottom and quick movement on the top of the web. It's a nice change of pace from the "stand there, get a lot of aggro," tank-and-spank encounters that many players are used to.
The trash in Firelands is another story. Some of it, like the Flamewalker packs, is designed to be a larger-scale, fun AOE-fest. You can just barrel into them, go to town with AOE tanking abilities, and scare the crap out of your healers. The same goes with the scorpion packs, at least until they start to explode. The trash, as many people will tell you, is brutal -- not necessarily because of the amount of it (that is definitely part), but the fact that it respawns so quickly. You do not get enough pulls on Shannox, for instance, without having to reclear a large amount of trash. As a tank, I need pulls and attempts to learn fights and understand positioning, and while the cool factor of being able to put Shannox where you want him is a good feature, there needs to be a change on the respawn timer or, at the very least, which trash is tied to which bosses.
A DPSer's perspective by Josh Myers
Imagine you're walking into The Barrens. Around you, there's an assortment of mobs: big ones, small ones, mobs that are so tightly pressed together that you're afraid of breathing on your screen lest you pull them. Now imagine if The Barrens were on fire, all of the mobs are level 85 elites with their own unique mechanics to figure out, and you need a force of you and nine to 24 of your best friends to even think about not dying.
Welcome to the Firelands.
Welcome to the Firelands.
For DPSers, Firelands' trash is all about personal responsibility. Irresponsible or lazy DPSers are going to find themselves dying frequently, whether it be from standing in Molten Lords' Lava Jets, getting Flame Breathed by Ancient Core Hounds, or killing themselves on the Patriarch Fire Turtle's damage reflect shield. Imagine an entire raid with trash that can actually kill you. Remember the Bound Deluge/Bound Inferno combo from Bastion of Twilight? It's like that, but for the entire raid.
DPSers also need to be responsible for using their abilities effectively. Being on the ball and ready to CC when your tanks give the order is a necessity for quick trash clearing. Slow CC means you'll miss a pat and have to wait for it or risk dying a painful death while engaging other trash. Smart hunters who know how to use their misdirect will be a vital addition to any 10- or 25-man raid team, as the rule of thumb for Firelands trash is "you can never pull back far enough." Boomkin need to be incredibly conservative with their Starfall use, as a poorly placed Starfall will kill you and every one of your friends.

Hoping to do some trash runs with the guildies once I'm home, so I'll get to see epic trash badness (;_;???) or something. But yay BoEs. And rep? Idk. Very nice reaction post, the three perspectives were great.
Josh Myers Jun 29th 2011 6:13PM
For the record, I actually like the trash! I won't in a week or two, but for now it's novel. And yea, you can get rep up until 5999 Friendly off trash packs, and then after that you only get it off big mobs like Molten Lords. Glad you enjoyed!
Natsumi Jun 29th 2011 6:12PM
So.... your impressions are all, "OMG I hate the trash!"
Bobbo Jun 29th 2011 6:19PM
I was getting Starfall nightmare flashbacks yesterday. I assume it's a bug they're going to fix, but, several patches ago, Starfall was changed so as not to hit targets not in combat. Yesterday seemed to revert that in some cases. That makes me a sad chicken panda.
Josh Myers Jun 29th 2011 6:24PM
Yea, I actually read about that on the bug report forums after one of our Boomkins pulled a corehound and a scorpion pack while we were fighting a molten surger. Paaaaaain. Hope it gets fixed soon!

If you tried the raid yesterday, there was a bug that made everything in the instance be in combat, players and npcs included. So starfall was able to hit just about everything. The glyph of focus is a great investment just for trash, assuming you don't already use it for boss fights.

Blizzard is going to have to nerf the BOE drop rates from trash in there. Of the four guilds I have friends in, all of them walked out of that raid with 3-6 BOEs or crafting patterns last night. That seems a bit high, and I already hear talk of forming PUGs simply to try for BOEs and patterns.
Also, Hunters are awesome at kiting the turtles. ;)
Riari Jun 29th 2011 6:34PM
I think they already did. Or our raid just had horrible luck last night with only one BS pattern dropping in two trash runs. We were going while they were hotfixing.
Though forming raids just to kill stuff for BoE drops already happened in the previous raid tier for Cataclysm. I saw lots of Bastion farming with just my own guild with some nice BoE epic drops.

Sounds more like the impressions are "OMG Interesting trash???" That might just be me projecting, though.
Josh Myers Jun 29th 2011 6:31PM
There's some truth to that assessment. That said, A) it was the first day of the instance being live B) the trash had new, interesting, and deadly mechanics and C) there was a whole lot of it. With the 2Hr Respawn timer on trash on top, it turns out that a lot of last night's raiding was killing the stuff.
Necromann Jun 29th 2011 6:23PM
This seems like a cool place. I'm not that big on raiding, but now at least I can roll over the t11 raids and get the title and the base portion of the legendary. Maybe I'll get the legendary later in this expac or next expac.
Necromann Jun 29th 2011 6:28PM
My Joystiq avatar hasn't changed yet. :(. I tried early today.

I have bad news for you. For two years I have tried everything known to man to change my icon. Chickens, goats, virgins... None of it worked.

My reactions, as a paladin tank that downed 3 bosses last night:
- dang, that's a lot of trash. And it takes way more kills to spawn Shannox than we expected. "maybe one more pull? hmm, one more?"
- the turtles are horrible. Don't fight the turtles.
- Shannox - everything we thought we knew was wrong. If you're trying to tank swap you're doing it wrong. When you do it RIGHT though, it becomes a lot of fun. You can get enough range/slows/kiting on riplimb and the boss so that you don't NEED a trap to get stacks to drop, but lining up perfect traps felt great
- Spider-dude - not sure what you meant about movement up top - I just tanked in place with a few sidesteps for lava puddles. Looked hectic downstairs but they managed OK.
- Lord R - LEFT LEFT LEFT OMG OMG LEFT LEFT RIIIIIIIGHHHHHTTTTT
- Lord R - I got to go dps, but kind of forgot how to Ret - for example I forgot to use any of my dps cooldowns. BOOO!
- Overall, kind of concerned how many single tank fights there are. I'm usually the one that gets to switch to dps, but my gear is going to be a mess - I'll be 3rd in line (in a 10man group) for any plate gear.
- Regular mode has a pretty large margin for error in full 372s - as long as we you have the mechanics down it's not too bad. However, in 359 gear this must be .... "interesting"
- Really curious how heroics will turn out.

Yeah, our RL tried to make us do the tankswap strat until myself & the other tank yelled at him enough. It was cake once we did it properly, yet really fun at the same time. I'm really looking forward to heroic mode.
The hardest part was dealing with rageface, until we decided to just kill him ASAP & put up with the debuff. After that it was even cakier.
Balgus Jun 29th 2011 6:29PM
Too much trash. 2 hours of trash before even seeing a boss is too much trash.
whig Jun 29th 2011 6:42PM
Lots of raid damage, lots of different mechanics, and lots of opportunities for people to get themselves killed. But unlike T11, one person going down doesn't wipe the group.
I agree that the BoE rate is high. In one run (3000 rep worth of trash) we had two epics and four patterns drop. The availability of the 378 crossbow does devalue the Eng built gun, for sure.
I had a blast on my run but it's going to get old fast.

WRT the *solo* 4.2 content, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Aggra grew on me. Previously she was "meh, Thrall's girlfriend", but upon doing the Elemental Bonds quest chain I discovered she's Thrall's fairly awesome girlfriend. I still don't think much of Thrall - for a Farseer he is ridiculously short-sighted - but Aggra is pretty neat.
It'd be cool to see something similar concerning Varian, actually. Even though I like *him* less than I like Thrall.

Having done trash on 10 and 25 man, I have to say my feelings were opposite to yours, I found on 25 man everything could go horrendously wrong horrendously quickly, whereas on 10 it felt like we could pull half the zone and just break out a bit of a sweat ^^

First impressions of Firelands as Boomy?
Trash pack ohhh.. Starfall.
*wipes raid as 3 koopa troopers a surger and a pack of scorpions decent on us*
%*&^%$*&^$% Please unbug Starall :(
