WoW Rookie: Logging into patch 4.2 for the first time

It's easy to feel overwhelmed the first time you log into patch 4.2. As the saying goes, it helps to take the time and read the patch notes. Patch notes are huge, however, and they contain a lot of information to digest all at once. All that complexity and new content comes crashing down on you the first time when you log in and things are different.
Here's your essential guide to logging into the game for the first time since patch 4.2. The first rule is: Don't panic. The patch is huge, but it's not so huge that it will radically change your life forever. I promise, stern-looking gnomes in stark uniforms won't spring from the alleys and beat up your character. You're in no immediate danger.
Let's go step by step through what you should be doing.
Check your mail
The first thing you should do when you log in is trot to your nearest mailbox and check your mail. There might be fun gifts waiting inside for you. Specifically, there are two types of mail you can get due to the patch: gold for valor points, gold for keys.
As we've beaten into the ground at this point, valor points were converted into justice points. If you would have amassed over 4,000 justice points after the conversion, the overage has been converted into cash money instead. That money will be waiting in your mailbox. You get 47 silver for each extra point -- not a bad jackpot if you were already maxed out on points.
The keyring was removed from the game. No more keyring. If you had keys in your keyring and those keys are no longer useful, you receive 2 gold, 50 silver for each of those keys. It's not a whopping amount, but it's a nice touch. The mail you receive says those keys were mysteriously floating in the nether. I kind of wonder how they got there, but I always like more free gold.
The Dungeon Journal
There aren't many huge changes to your interface, but there are a few extra buttons along the bottom. The biggest new button for rookies and casual players is the Dungeon Journal.
The Dungeon Journal is a huge new feature. By default, you press Shift + J to open it up, or just click the button in your UI. The Dungeon Journal is a comprehensive list of the bosses that you'll encounter in the game. I find the format a little difficult to read, but it sure is fun to scroll through all the different boss models.

While Blizzard isn't giving away all of its boss strategies in the Dungeon Journal, these little hints make a great heads-up.
Check your portal and quest area
The Horde and Alliance obviously have different locations for their portal area and quest boards. That being said, you'll find your new quest breadcrumbs in those places for all of the new, exciting patch 4.2 content.
You'll end up with a whole new series of daily quests. Unless you're planning on storming into the Firelands raids, these quests will probably form the majority of your definitive patch 4.2 experience. There's no need to rush them, but that should be a key part of your interest.
Fix your mods
The last but probably most important step into the new patch experience is to fix all of your broken mods. You can just click "Load out of date Addons" and see how your interface works out without much adjustment, but chances are, you have some downloading to do. Boss mods, damage meters, and all that jazz are due for an upgrade.
All the other stuff
Don't forget to check out our complete guide to the patch. You can just scroll down through the subheaders and look for the new stuff that interests you. It's probably the quickest way to make sense of the achievements and activity you see around you.
Most importantly, take it slow and enjoy the content patch. We only get these big patches every 6 months or so; there's no reason to blow up the content and rob yourself of a good time.

"If you had keys in your keyring and those keys are no longer useful, you receive 2 gold, 50 silver for each of those keys."
I noticed that I now have (useful?) keys taking up about 6 bag spaces. This is suppose to be an improvement over the keyring?
DonNochay Jun 30th 2011 1:45PM
Yeah, weird stuff. I, on the other hand, have zero keys in my bags, and got paid for 2 of them by mail......no idea what keys I had exactly, other than the setthek halls one...
vendeurfrancais Jun 30th 2011 1:17PM
i know i had about 25 keys, now i have 8 left over and got paid for about 9. what gives, which keys counted?

I think you got money for keys with a vendor value, like BC heroic keys.
Twotigermoon Jun 30th 2011 1:49PM
2G and 50s is NOT adequate compensation for Medivh's tower key! That was a long quest chain and much time and effort! Same thing for the key to Scholomance.

Hmm, I am currently on the quest line for door to kara. I wonder what happens when I finish it...

Anybody have a good guide for how many marks of the world tree you should have by the end of each day? At the third day here I think my guys have 23 (20 having been spent to get to the first new quest area). I think at the end of the first day I had 12 (from the intial quest line and 3 dailies - one a two parter, there are only 2 available at start at the sanctuary of Malorne), then 16 the second day (the extra 4 again being from the 3 dailies).
By the way, you may not know it, but the first quest area you can open up on the third day of dailies lets you buy (with gold) an agility ring (with a lot of hit on it), a caster neck, a strength dps neck, and plate tanking boots. So, don't go spending your JP/gold on getting those things elsewhere.

That's a good point. Has WoW Insider made a guide to Molten Front vendor NPCs and their goods, besides just linking WoWHead?
DonNochay Jun 30th 2011 3:15PM
Very, very excited to get to those tanking boots, as I'm just now putting together a Prot set. Also pumped that they are:
1. Epic
2. Purchaseable with gold.
I got started on the new daily area late (today, actually) so I'm a bit behind.

Marks
12 first day
4 next
4 next
turn in 20 to open new zone inside (molten front)
then recoup 15 and earn 10 more.
Sitting at 25 atm, end of day 3.
I am not sure how many more per day until I can open the next area, which takes 150.
Will find out tomorrow, day 4.
Per the tanking boots, the Twilight Highland rep ones are better, if you want to mange your efforts, at least for pally (go mastery).
Amaxe Jun 30th 2011 9:47PM
Interesting. They only allowed us 8 (everyone running through the dailies had 23 marks, not 25).
Amaxe Jul 1st 2011 12:43AM
nvm. i found out that not all the dailies are inside firelands, so yeah, 25 today, and I'm going to guess 10 tokens per day after that (5 dailies @2 each).

Update
Day 4.
Just ran the offered dailies and I picked up 14 more.
Not sure if I missed one, I am looking now.
However, this makes some sense I suppose.
10 from Molten Front quests
04 from Hyjal (Malorne) quests.

Could you do a wow rookie: darkmoon cards column please? I started playing just before wrath and this whole section of the game is a mystery to me. What are the cards for? Why do I want them? Which cards are good and which are a waste of money etc. Thanks
Revnah Jul 1st 2011 3:58AM
Darkmoon Deck Cards can be created by Scribes (characters with the Inscription profession). Every time a Scribe makes a card, they get a random one out of several "decks". These cards can be traded, and Scribes often swap cards to get a full deck. A deck consists of the following cards:
Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Ace.
Once you have all eight of the same set, you can combine them into a "Deck". At the Darkmoon Faire (once a month for a week), you can trade them in for a finished Darkmoon Card. These finished Cards can be used as trinkets, and depending on your class and spec, may be anything from completely worthless to completely awesome for you.
Does that make it clearer?
Samuel Jun 30th 2011 7:31PM
Yes I just saw the one I missed. There was the "Protectors of Hyjal" one up by the Sanctuary of Malorne after I finished the ones down in Firelands. So, watch for that.
Actually I have 33 on one of my guys because of a weird seam with the time. I managed to pick up the dailies late last night, but before the usual daily quest deadline. Not sure how that happened, but I was able to the dailies again today.
