The situation you're describing is different. If Stars had hacked their way around Blizzards security and awarded themselves the kill without anyone noticing, then perhaps your logic would apply.
This is more like making a product illegal to use, but legal to purchase. You walk into a store and pay for the product without breaking any laws. The moment you use that product, you're suddenly a felon.
