I was an RPG junkie who had vowed never to pay a monthly fee to play a game, even though I had been curious about WoW since I heard it was coming out. Someone got me a copy of vanilla WoW as a gift in early 2006, and I thought "Well, I have the game now, so I might as well play it until the free month runs out, just to see what all the fuss is about. After that, I'll just cancel and return to the games I was playing before." Before my first day of trying WoW, I was hooked, and I've kept a continuous subscription ever since.
And like the posters above me, I too am an older gamer who has played tabletop D&D for ages and loved SSI's gold-box games along with Ultima IV and beyond, Bard's Tale, Wasteland, and the rest on my beloved C-64. I miss those days!
