I really suggest that you read the book I linked after my comment (you'll have to go to the main comments page for this article and scroll up to the top, since you didn't actually reply to it, so it's in a separate thread from this one).But if you want that sound-bite answer, it's this: copyright law in the U.S. has been twisted and perverted beyond the farthest reaches of its original intentions by those with money and influence to the concrete and demonstrable detriment of our culture and technology.
