There's a plot point you've missed out here (and one which is near and dear to my vengeance-loving heart); the treason of Tyrande Whisperwind.See, during the Third War things were going downhill for the Night Elves; Ashenvale was overrun by demons, and northern Ashenvale was rapidly becoming Felwood. In the midst of this, Tyrande had a bright idea."Hey," she said to Malfurion, "Your brother used to be pretty good at killing demons, how about we go get him?""Uhh. Tyrande honey, we locked Illidan up. He was my rival for leadership *and* my rival for your affections *and* after ten thousand years he's still obsessed with you. Like, crazy stalker obsessed. Not to mention we put *your* political rival - the elf everyone expected to become High Priestess before you were "chosen by Elune" - in charge of keeping him locked up. I don't think that's such a good idea.""Screw you Malfurion, I'm going to go do it anyway. A girl likes to feel wanted, Mr. Sleepsalot.""..."So Tyrande and her Sentinels ventured into the barrow dens beneath Hyjal, encountering (among other things, such as feral bear druids) the Biggest Panda Ever, and made their way to Illidan's prison."OMGWTF," said Maiev, "You told me to keep him locked up forever and I am going to do that because I don't know if it's escaped your notice but I am *crazy* obsessed with law and order. No, not the TV show. JUSTICE!""Screw you Maiev, I'm going to do it anyway. By the way that plate armour makes your butt look fat, why do you think I always wear this pretty mooncloth robe?"So Tyrande beat up Maiev, slaughtered Maiev's wardens, killed Califax (a Keeper of the Grove and one of the sons of Cenarius) and released Ilidan."OMG Tyrande dearest!" said Illidan. "I new you'd come for me, I've been fantasising about you for the past ten thousand years, now you're not sleeping with my loser brother we can finally get it on like I betrayed night elf civilization to the Legion for!""Uhm. About that ... yeah, I'm still involved with your brother.""OMGWTF ;_; noes! I'll still kill demons for you my darling Tyrande, you'll see how much more awesome I am than Malfurion!""Yeah yeah, the Dreadlord Tichondrius is thataway.""At once, my love! OMG, he's a big dude ... my power level's going to have be OVER NINE THOUSAND to defeat him!"Enter Arthas, stage right. "Yeah, I work for the Legion," says the Death Knight, "But they are like the worst bosses EVER, I am sick of the paperclip audits. You know, the Legion has the skull of Gul'dan right nearby, if you absorb its power you'll be able to defeat Tichondrius.""Kthxbai, random undead dude! Ohaidere, evil orc warlock skull! OM NOM NOM! Check it out, badass wings and horns! Tyrande is all about the horns, and now I have some she'll HAVE to leave my loser brother!""Yeah, I don't think that'll work," Tichondrius tells him, "I mean, my horns pretty much qualify me as an honorary Tauren and I can't get any tail - OMGWTFBBQ u kiled me! Not cool dude, not cool!"So Illidan goes back to Tyrande and says "Check it out babe, I am totally badass now. Sure you don't want to leave my loser brother for a chance to ride the Illy-train?""OMG ew Illidan, you look totes gross," replies Tyrande. "Yeah," says Malfurion, "I am totally not inviting you to Thanksgiving dinner now, get out of here.""D: D: D: D:"So Illidan went off in a huff, determined to gain Ultimate Power over Everything and show Tyrande that he was totally cooler than Malfurion. This didn't go so well, and later his Warglaives were farmed by rogues.Anyway, to get back to Tyrande here - in a nutshell, she killed a bunch of her own people to release a dangerous criminal. She's been fairly silent on it since then, and understandably - it is not exactly good PR for her administration! But you can be sure that the night elves who were there remember. To quote Maiev, "Tyrande will pay for setting Illidan free!"Of course, it seems to be one of those things (like Grom's murder of Cenarius) that Blizzard seems intent on sweeping under the rug. But I remain faithful - one day, Maiev will return to us, and the guilty shall suffer!

It is arguable that not many Night Elves would actually know about that though. Also it's a very old plot point where these series seem to be about the roleplaying opportunities of Cataclysm. A more valid point that Anne missed is that Malfurion is now back and Frandral is gone. People have to be a bit curious about that.
