No, it's simpler than that - we just need not to fear them. Make them into a cutesy holiday theme, like Halloween, or Bonfire Night in Britain (where we "celebrate" the near death of a king and all of parliament by fiery death being averted with... fireworks and burning effigies of one of the "terrorists". It's fun! There's food and everything!).

People will forget the scary Old Gods when we're licking lollipops shaped like tentacles. Thus their power will be reduced to nothing, and they'll wither away.
