#1 rule for writing a bad guy: The bad guy should THINK he's the good guy. The old gods utterly fail at this, since everyone involved is just about chaos for chaos's sake. Just going crazy/getting corrupted is just an easy cop-out. One of the reasons I liked the Defias storyline, too. Also: Algalon :)

That's likely why Arthas was such a popular villian. He thought he was a good guy the entire time. Even once he decided to kill everything he had thought that the world would be better off that way.
