Why is this not a mount? I mean a real one, not one that you use to bomb bugs and naga-looking things.

It IS a real mount.
One drops off of Ragnaros as a rare drop. Another color is a reward from the Glory of the Firelands Raider meta achievement.

Good to know. However, for non-raiders like myself (of which there are many it would seem), this will remain unattainable...Maybe they'll do a random off-color version for the rest of us to work towards (or buy...)

You can get it as a drop or from achievements, both linked to Firelands.

I'm not a raider myself and as much as I'd love to have that mount (not to mention the amazing Firelands gear I've been seeing around) I don't see why us non-raiders deserve the super cool and rare things. In fact I think the drop rates on things like mounts should diminish over time. Not all of them but the really cool ones. Blizzard did a pretty great job at making sure not everybody and his brother got a phoenix mount out of TK and as much as I'd love that mount too I just get sick of seeing twelve people with the same "super rare" mount or "nigh unobtainable" robe standing around all at once in Trade District.
Again, as much as I want it all, I wouldn't be nearly as fascinated by the game if everybody could get all the coolest things.
