Citation or clarification, please.
In July 2008, Vivendi (which owned Blizzard Entertainment) merged with Activision.
Paid realm transfer service was available (at least) in 2006.
Lil' K.T. became the first pet sold on the Blizzard Store in November 2009.
Mobile auction house service became available august 2010.
I say nothing about causation - Blizzard Entertainment under Vivendi might well have started the "pay for pets" thing sooner or later.
I don't really consider the realm transfer service part of the microtransaction trend. But certainly the pets and mounts started being sold after the merger. Whether that means that Blizzard is a "money cow biatch" or not is an observation left up to the individual.
