If just having 4-5K players in a zone spamming emotes can crash their servers, Blizzard really needs to improve their servers. And I'm not being sarcastic. A server crashing is a sign that something is very wrong with it. Servers under stress should, instead, gracefully degrade the services they provide until they can bear the burden again. In EVE, for example, when the servers are overloaded they just slow down the game until it's lag-free again (and even before this fallback system was implemented, they could actually handle a couple thousand players in a massive free for all without crashing); LotRO's servers just spawn more instances of the overloaded zones, spreading the players through the new instances; and so on.
